The movie A Single Man......

I regret that we have hijacked this thread . . . but

There are people who think the film borders child porn. I had wanted to see it but now I don't think so. At least not until I find out what the fuss was about.

Death in Venice borders on child porn? or did you mean A SIngle Mean, though I doubt you meant that, because I just don't see how anyone could connect the two.

Anyway, Death in Venice is available through Netflix....

When I went to see A Single Man, I was so affected by the ending and apparently, so was this woman who sat a few seats away, sobbing and bawling her eyes out. That surprised me, to say the least.

I meant Death in Venice. You have to understand we are backward folk. I went on Yutube to find a preview and it showed that old guy going after that young guy. My father (who suspects I'm a poof anyway) saw the video and said "That is sick. That old man is chasing that young kid. That's illegal and I don't want you looking at that shit." It was no use arguing with him.

The film was absolutely stunning in every sense - the aesthetics (provided by the team from Man Men) - the colour palette which matches the mood that George (Firth) goes through as the film develops - the music - the performances (Firth's close up when he receives the phone call is masterful), Moore brilliant (as always), Hoult wonderful (I went out and got the DVD for Skins after seeing this film)!

Cannot recommend this film enough!

When I first read about this movie before it's release I was taken aback as it appeared to be my life as a movie, except for the young hunk part. Losing a partner later in life, mine after 33 yrs., his I believe after 15.

I knew better than to go to a theatre and see it, I wasn't sure I would be able to handle it in case it got too surreal. When it was released July 6th I bought it, watched it, and boy was I right.

I went through, and still going through, many of the emotions he has had to endure, including the constant memory flashbacks that come out of nowhere and of course the suicide scenes, although I never went as far as he did in preparations and really always knew it wasn't an option, but the thoughts were there for some time. I just simply wanted to be where he was if it was possible and still do to this day.

I'm glad I waited to watch it at home alone. I talked to him the whole way through the movie, but then again, I talk to him all day, everyday, anyhow.

Forgive me, ibill1, I don't wish to intrude, but your thoughts remind me so much of another man's loss:

Strange friend, past, present, and to be;
Loved deeplier, darklier understood;
Behold, I dream a dream of good,
And mingle all the world with thee.

--one verse from Alfred, Lord Tennyson's "In Memoriam", written after the death of Arthur Hallam.
