The Official American Music Awards 2009 thread!

Um...

I'm sorry, but I'm having a lot of troubles with Whitney's performance.

First of all. The years of cocaine abuse are showing. It shows in her down-trodden eyes, her face, her voice which is a pale, crackling shadow of it's former self....

She had the best musicians backing her, the best lighting and stage possible, even the requisite gospel choir... And still, objectively speaking, it was a mediocre performance at best.

Then, there's the lyrical content of that song. She's sort of playing the Tina card here. She's been "beaten down", but she wasn't "built to crumble" and all of that...

Horseshit.

Tina was a victim of horrible spousal abuse and grew up in poverty. Ms. Houston was born into relative privilege and was given a voice from God.

SHE, and no one else is responsible for every line of coke that went up her nose and every pipe that touched her lips.

From the very beginning of her career, she made millions and was treated like royalty, and she squandered it all.

Does she strike you as a woman strong enough to go on tour ? To, in some part, help to reward her fans that have followed her for over 20 years, now ?

It's all she can do to pull herself together for a four minute performance.

All the lights and the dancers and the pomp and circumstance can't hide the fact that she is a self-inflicted shell of her former self.

Whitney wasn't that great....

Adam was awefully annoying...

I think the AMA's are moving to cable pretty soon....pretty boring lately

Soo many celebrities are tweeting about Whitney's triumphant performance. Toni Braxton tweeted "So happy for Whitney! She looks beautiful!"

Sherri Shepard of "The View" tweeted, "The Diva is Back!" and that she loved Whitney's performance.

....even Carmello Anthony tweeted and gave Whitney props! :=D:

Taylor Swift Tops Even Michael Jackson at American Music Awards

Today 8:10 PM PST by Josh Grossberg

Of course, what's an AMA show without Music? And there was plenty to be had.

Backed by a gospel choir, a joyful Houston brought the house down with a performance of her new single, "I Didn't Know My Own Strength."

After a standing-O, Samuel L. Jackson presented the "So Emotional" singer with the International Artist of the Year, an award given out only six times in the history of the AMAs.

Without question. It's not like she'll have to sing.

So the Whitney fans thought Whitney nailed it, the Rihanna fans thought Rihanna brought it, and the Janet fans think the Janet proved to the world that she's the one. OK.

My one wish is that this many people watched and talked about a show that involved artists actually doing good performances of good songs.

LOL!

That must be some strong garlic necklace you're wearing because none of her fanatical fans have refuted your comment.

we save that for you honey! but i'm u huge Whitney fan but actually agree with a lot of things he said.

She's ruined her own carreer, YES...
She decided to do cocaine or whatever drugs herself YES..
her voice is nowere near her god given voice YES..
She sometimes has an attitude that i don't like Yes..

but...

Will she be able to tour with this voice YES

Do i respect her for all she's been going through and be able to face the world again after al the names they've been calling her and all the crap they made up (when there was enough drama already) YES

Do i think she's a good person to her family and daughter YES

But she has a long way to go, and yes Whitney is back and the album did great but the voice like we all loved is gone. However if she finds a way to re-sing her classic with this current voice then that's fine by me. I think a somewhat "battered" Whitney is still many times better then the so called singers (like Rihanna, Miley, Britney, J.Lo, Beyonce) that dominate the charts now.

......yup. And none of them can command a stage like Whitney Houston can. No matter how much booty shaking, fireworks, rolling around on the floor and all that other stuff that they do. All Whitney Houston needs to do is stand in front of a mic, and she can command a stage/audience 20x better than someone who puts on a real visual performance like Bey or Britney. :=D:

.....she's the greatest!

Did not really like any performances

I did not see clarksons but I know I will love her

buttttt

Whitney looked beautiful and I am soo happy for her.

The stages should of been bigger giving the performers more opportunities to entertain.

Showed who is truly entertaining or who has a good music director.

Whitney Houston AMA performance set the stage on fire!

After an interval of 10 long years, Whitney Houston was back with a blast in the AMA. She casted her singing spell and the audience were enthralled in her magic again. The former model and now a singer/actress performed the song ‘I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.’ Dressed like an angel in a long white dress, she still had that magic in her. She stole the show completely and she looked as if she was in regular touch of doing performances.

Not only did she win, but she also received the ‘International Artist Award’ for being tremendously famous all around the globe. The troubled life with her husband did not let her down on her talent. She has the record of winning maximum number of AMAs in single year, she has sold more than 170 million records of her albums have been sold worldwide, she is the only artist with seven consecutive multi-platinum albums and she also set the record of being #1 Billboard 100 Hits for seven consecutive times.

Now that’s what they call a living legend. She got a standing ovation from the crowd, when she was being awarded.

Kelly Clarkson gave the best "Solo"performance of the night....Kelly is keeping Pop/Rock ballads alive & kicking..

Timbaland, Nelly Furtado and the other chick gave the best Group performance....Timbaland is one of the best song-writer/producers in the bizness...

Whitney was a Vision of Beauty..The voice was weak in several areas but she gave all she had...She earned that award with her successful track-record....Now let's get ready to see how many GRAMMY nods will come her way...

Kudos to the AMA's for opting out of a "Host" this year...The acceptance speeches were longer and they had time to squeeze in more performances...Over-all the show was alright...
