The Official Aretha Franklin Thread

Re: we are preparing to lose the [other] queen, Aretha is on her way home

I heard she died on the anniversary of Elvis' death.

and Babe Ruth. It's a pretty serious day for the greats, Angela Bassett and Madonna were born on this day as well.

Re: we are preparing to lose the [other] queen, Aretha is on her way home

Aretha was an amazing performer, and an amazing woman!
Can you imagine the performances in Heaven that she is going to give now?
Surely she will have favor with Him!

Re: Rest In Peace Aretha

Aretha was a one-of-a kind talent.
Music won't be the same without her here.

Re: Rest In Peace Aretha

Dear music industry

We are still reeling from the lackluster Prince tributes, the infamous Bet Awards tribute with that iconic look on his face when the camera cut to him as Trey Songz mangled one of his songs and the look on his face was clearly tepid. Then post-mortum grammy tribute where Madonna did something in a purple suit and I remember feeling violated. DO NOT call Taylor Swift, do NOT call Ciara, do NOT call Miley Cyrus or Tinashe. Jill Scott's not busy these days. Ledisi. Taylor Dayne. Jojo. Melissa ethridge. Hell, a drunken Chaka Khan would turn in a more riveting tribute than half of these boring ass contemporary artists. An Aretha tribute needs an artist who has some balls in their throat. Do NOT turn it into an excuse for sexy skinny vixens who couldn't sing their way out of a paperbag to show off their designer duds while they destroy one of the most important catalogs in rnb and gospel history. This woman sang at MLK's funeral. She posted Angela Davis' bail. She is a legend and deserves nothing but the utmost respect in paying tribute to her. If yall butcher the inevitable tributes [I hear Clive'eesha Davis is already planning one] I'm boycotting music for a whole year.

Sincerely
An Aretha Junkie

I think she was 14 or 15 when she recorded this. Sounds like a grown ass woman.

Re: Rest In Peace Aretha

oh, aretha, i am devastated by your passing....i listen to you every day....the queen is gone, there will never be another R.I.P.

Re: we are preparing to lose the [other] queen, Aretha is on her way home

I wish I was that ballsy, someone who by all accounts has never harmed a fly is on their death bed and I go out of my way to make it known I don't particularly like them [did you mean her or her music? It's a rhetorical question don't answer that]. That aside, I admire your ability to sneak a diss into a well wish, I'm usually to clumsy when I try to do that.

Both, i find her dull, though of course none of that takes away from her talent or her history with MLK etc, she's just not my cup of tea.

I heard she died on the anniversary of Elvis' death.

That is true.

And how appropriate. She was born in Memphis.

The King and Queen had a link.

What a different world when Franklin brought Obama to tears at the Kennedy Center.

It is difficult to imagine any poignancy from our current president, but I digress.

The greatest voice in American popular music has been stilled. Our beloved #ArethaFranklin has gone. For me, she was a musical lighthouse, guiding and inspiring with every note. I loved her so and love her still. Goodbye, Queen of Soul.

"Our Heavenly Father has chosen one of our most prolific voices to join His Heavenly Choir...............Aretha now rests in peace!!.....I, like I'm sure she was taught, that we are All put on this earth for a purpose, and once that is fulfilled, we will then be 'Called Home'! She sincerely will be missed throughout the Musical World, Family, and Friends. My deep heartfelt condolence I send from my family to her family and do hope the grief I know they are feeling will begin to subside with time, as losing a family member is a VERY HARD THING to process. Know that her pain is over and she suffers no longer! Rest in Peace my Friend."

The wondrous chorus of America at its best has lost a powerful voice. Aretha Franklin shook the heavens and our own complacency with her spirit and by tackling life with power and purpose. #Respect

"This morning, my longest friend in this world went home to be with our father. I will miss her so much, but I know she’s at peace."

‏It was a double thrill for me to perform on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera on my 85th birthday and have the Queen of Soul (and heart) Aretha Franklin singing with me....she will be missed by the world.

Gloria Estefan: "For as long as I can remember, Aretha Franklin has been the absolute zenith, the guiding light, the master for any girl that aspired to sing or even just appreciated someone at the top of their game. I was blessed to have sung with her on more than one occasion and each time I felt that I was in the presence of musical royalty that would forever raise the bar and set the standard. Long live the Queen of Soul through her extraordinary & singular voice and her indelible music. "

Bonnie Raitt wrote an extremely lengthy essay, which said, in part, "I am so saddened by the loss of our beloved Queen of Soul, Aretha. She has always been my favorite and the greatest singer I’ve ever heard. Along with Ray Charles, she has been the most influential artist in my life. She brought the raw passion and beauty of gospel and the deepest blues, irrepressible rhythm to every note she sang."

Bonnie added, "I learned [from her]...most of what I still know about men, love, strength and vulnerability in the face of loss and betrayal; about the deep well of spirit and surrender to a higher purpose, including standing up for oneself and demanding respect....She gave us the raw power and dimension of what a real, ’natural’ woman could be."

Billy Joel said, "We've lost the greatest singer of our time."We have lost the greatest singer of our time. As a songwriter, I know personally how meaningful a gifted interpreter of material can be. No one can replace her. - Billy Joel

Brian Wilson, of the Beach Boys, called her one of the greatest and most emotional singers and said he used to love listening to her music in the 60s.I’m very sad to hear about Aretha Franklin passing. She was one of the greatest and most emotional singers. I used to love listening to her in the sixties but her music is timeless. Love & Mercy to Aretha’s family and friends.

Re: Rest In Peace Aretha

Like a member of the family, Aretha has been a part of my life forever.

And yet, among all the songs Aretha recorded, her duet with Michael McDonald from 1991 remains one of her most unique performances.

Rest In Peace Aretha Franklin

Re: Rest In Peace Aretha

^well, Duke Ellington and Count Basie are real musicians, at the very least not "king of marketing" like Michael Jackson and whoever is the king of rock...

But seriously, musical world has lost one of its GIANT today...
