Aretha Franklin Cancels Concert For Health Reasons

Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin has canceled a concert in Charlottesville for health reasons.

The Daily Progress reports Franklin called off the concert on the advice of her doctors.

The concert had been rescheduled for Wednesday night at the Paramount Theater. It originally had been set for Oct. 1 but was pushed back after Franklin's son, Eddie Franklin, was beaten at a Detroit gas station.

Theater officials say fans can get ticket refunds from the place of purchase.

Aretha Franklin to Undergo Surgery for Undisclosed Reason

Soul singer Aretha Franklin was scheduled to undergo surgery on Thursday for an undisclosed reason, a Detroit City Council member who organized a prayer vigil for the "Queen of Soul" said on Thursday.

Franklin, 68, a multiple Grammy award winner, in early November canceled her concert and personal appearances until May 2011 on the orders of her doctors.

Councilwoman JoAnn Watson said she organized a prayer vigil held on Wednesday for the singer to bring "people who know and love and admire Ms. Franklin" together before the surgery.

Franklin gave permission for the vigil and even picked the location, in front of the Spirit of Detroit statue by Detroit's city hall, Watson said.

"We are not prying into the circumstances, the details of the surgery," Watson said. "We just wanted her to know that we stand with her in prayer and love and support."

A publicist for Franklin said the singer sent a letter of thanks to supporters for the vigil. The publicist declined further comment.

Franklin, who sang at U.S. President Barack Obama's inauguration in 2009, was admitted to a Detroit hospital in October for undisclosed reasons and released a few days later.

The singer also canceled two concerts in the summer after sustaining minor injuries in a fall at her home.

Aretha Franklin Says Surgery 'Highly Successful'

Soul singer Aretha Franklin underwent a "highly successful" surgery on Thursday for an undisclosed health problem, the "Queen of Soul" said in a statement released by her spokeswoman.

In early November, Franklin, 68 and a multiple Grammy Award winner, canceled her concert and personal appearances until May 2011 on the orders of her doctors, No reason was given, and her representatives have declined to disclose her illness.

"I had superb doctors and nurses whom were blessed by all the prayers of the city and the country," Franklin said in a statement following her surgery.

The Detroit Free Press reported on Thursday afternoon that the "Respect" singer was "in good spirits and resting comfortably," citing Franklin's cousin, Brenda Corbett.

City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson had organized a prayer vigil for Franklin on Wednesday in front of the Spirit of Detroit statue by Detroit's city hall.
"We are not prying into the circumstances, the details of the surgery," Watson said. "We just wanted her to know that we stand with her in prayer and love and support."

Franklin, who sang at U.S. President Barack Obama's inauguration in 2009, was admitted to a Detroit hospital in October for undisclosed reasons and released a few days later.

The singer also canceled two concerts in the summer after sustaining minor injuries in a fall at her home.

She is a living legend of U.S. soul music with a string of hits in the 1960s and '70s that included "Chain of Fools," "I Say a Little Prayer" and "I Never Loved a Man."

Aretha Franklin Reportedly Has Cancer

A relative tells a Detroit news station that Queen of Soul is suffering from cancer.

Aretha Franklin has cancer, according to multiple reports.

A relative has confirmed to Detroit's Fox 2 news station that the iconic songstress is battling the disease, while The Detroit News reports that Franklin is suffering from pancreatic cancer.

Franklin was recently forced to cancel all her upcoming concert dates through May and underwent surgery last Thursday while fans helmed a prayer vigil in her native Detroit. Although she did not disclose the nature of her illness, the soul great released a statement saying the procedure was "highly successful."

"God is still in control. I had superb doctors and nurses whom were blessed by all the prayers of the city and the country," Franklin said. "God bless you all for your prayers!"

The reports cropped up the same day that civil-rights leader the Reverend Jesse Jackson gave an update about the singer's condition. "She's conscious, communicating and taking daily walks up and down the hall," Jackson told The Associated Press on Wednesday (December 8). He said he had visited the soul icon about four or five times, and added that her "spirits are high, and her faith is strong." "She has amazing strength — body, religion and faith," he said. "It's what he keeps her going."

The reported cancer diagnosis also comes after Franklin broke two ribs from a fall in August, which forced her to miss two concerts in New York.

The music luminary has been secretive about her health problems in the past. In 2004, Franklin was hospitalized for an undisclosed illness.

Aretha Franklin: I Feel Good

Soul legend Aretha Franklin says she feels "great" and is "piddling around the house" as she follows doctors orders to rest at home after surgery two weeks ago.

"I feel great," Franklin told JET magazine in her first interview since being discharged from a Detroit area hospital earlier this week. "The doctors say I can do whatever I feel like I am up to do. Of course, that doesn't mean any concerts or anything like that. But I can do things around the house, and today I am just piddling around the house," she said.

Franklin, 68, underwent surgery about two weeks ago that she has called "highly successful." Both the Detroit News and the city's Fox TV station said this month that Franklin was battling pancreatic cancer, the disease that claimed actor Patrick Swayze last year.

She has not commented on her specific illness, but she did tell JET she would have more to say on her diagnosis shortly.
"I am putting Aretha together first. We will put Ree Ree together first. This is Aretha time to do whatever it is that I need to do. But I will talk more later," Franklin said.

A monumental figure in American popular music, Franklin dominated the soul landscape during the 1960s and 1970s with such songs as "Think," "Respect" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman." The daughter of a preacher and civil rights activist, she revisited her roots with several acclaimed live gospel albums, including her 1972 Grammy winner "Amazing Grace."

Franklin said doctors had told her to rest at home for about eight weeks. She said she had received messages of support from a number of people including Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and Condoleeza Rice, and she was thankful for her fellow gospel performers saying a little prayer for her.

Here's Bob Herbert's tribute to Aretha Franklin from the NYT:

Regarding one of my favorite Aretha hits, "I Say a Little Prayer", songwriter of such - Burt Bacharach, thought that Aretha's version was the best - even better than Dionne Warwick's - for whom the song was written... quite a compliment.

All of the postings on this thread speak for themselves. :=D:

the one and only voice that ever mattered!

best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Aretha Franklin: Health Problem 'Has Been Resolved'

Aretha Franklin has granted another brief interview about her unspecified illness that required surgery last month, telling JET magazine that the health problem, while still undisclosed, "has been resolved."

"I am not one to do a lot of talking about my personal health or business," says the 68-year-old singer, who won't confirm rumors that she was treated for pancreatic cancer. "I don't have to talk about my health with anybody other than my doctors. The problem has been resolved."

Franklin says that she felt "a very hard pain in my side" during a concert in Toronto last year, and that she believed that the pain had resulted from a recent colonoscopy. "I got up at 2 o'clock in the morning and called the doctor who did the colonoscopy and told him what was happening," she says. "He said, 'Miss Franklin, whatever it is, it is not from the colonoscopy. You need to come home and have a CAT-scan.' Thank God he said that because that unfolded everything, what the problem was and everything."

Franklin underwent surgery at a Detroit hospital in early December and was discharged on Dec. 15. The singer canceled all of her concerts through spring 2011 and was told to rest at home for eight weeks following the surgery.

The famously private Franklin told JET that she wanted to use the most recent interview to update her fans and express her gratitude for their support. "I know my fans are concerned," she says. "Let them know I am feeling great and coming along.

Aretha Franklin Says Her Health Is 'Superb'

Amonth after surgery in Detroit for an undisclosed ailment, Aretha Franklin says her health is "superb."

Franklin called in to Wednesday's installment of "The Wendy Williams Show," telling the host she was relaxing at a casino hotel in her hometown and hopes to begin traveling soon, saying she'll be "looking for a fabulous beach." She says she has two more weeks of down time as she continues her recovery.

The legendary singer also vowed to reschedule the concert dates she missed.

Franklin's voice was strong and steady during the interview, and she hinted she was dating someone.

With the exception of written statements and print interviews with Jet magazine, this was one of the first times the 68-year-old Franklin has been heard since the Dec. 2 surgery.
