The Official Aretha Franklin Thread

At her best I think she is my fave female singer probably ever! Love her late '60s-early '70s tone and clear-as-a-bell high notes. Her voice combined sweetness and power. Oh so much power!
".................
I enjoy her performances at '98 Diva's Live concert too. She kinda rolled back the clock for those and seemed to sing better than she had for the rest of the mid-80s-90s (at least for me). She was even belting (like, fully belting! and not just falsetto-ing) some notes that I thought she couldn't hit anymore at that stage.

There is no doubt she has talent and can sing. My only issue with her, and Patti LaBelle, is they tend to be nasally, again, IMO not too nice of a sound.

Patti is much worse than Aretha but i just don't like that nasal voice/belt. No meanness, just my opinion.

I will say i love her lower register, thats nice.

Oh noes, you're right, it's not a nice sound. Patti is way more nasal and I find her voice less pleasant than Peak Aretha :). I think nasal only applied sometimes to Peak Aretha. I don't really hear it so much with her ;).

I think Aretha Franklin in her early years was very clear-toned and not that nasal actually.

I mean if she was a bit nasal, she didn't really have that 'pinched' sound Patti does.

^^ Yes, earlier she wasn't as nasally. But the other clip above, singing the National Anthem is real nasal. But Chain of Fools is not as nasal.

But, for me, I've never been a fan, but I do like some of her stuff and her lower register is awesome!

in her prime, she was untouchable. that being said, while she sounds good for her age i thought streisand was able to preserve her voice and range better.

she is also reportedly doing an album where she sings the songs of some of her fave female singers . How will i know is reportedly in there as well as people.

For her age, she sounds great.

Her low and low-mid range are still sounding awesome, and pretty much untouched by time. But she's no dramatic soprano anymore (forgivable at her age). Her higher notes are unpleasant to my ears now though (for her singing nowadays I agree with jktooooo). I think if I were her, future recordings would just focus on the kind of alto vocal range she has now :). I think it would sound better. She still sounds great in a comfortable low-mid range.

My favorite aretha song (Cissy Houston is the beautiful background singer hitting the high notes.):

Wonderful song JK. And another example of how not overly-nasal she was in her youth :luv:.

Jaroda....yes, i posted for you as well!! Love her voice in that song and Cissy in there is splendid!

This one's quite understated but I like it a lot. Probably her song I've most been playing lately :D.

Aretha Franklin - I Will Survive (The Aretha Version)

"Clive and I are going to get together on what the new CD is going to be probably in the next month or so, and I'm looking forward to it," Franklin said before opening Wednesday's (March 4) episode of American Idol with her version of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," the latest single from Diva Classics, at the Fillmore Detroit in her hometown.
