Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

Gentlemen... Soap, who very generously made and updates this thread for us, has asked before we stay on point. So let's stay on point.

I'm not saying don't talk about race relations or whatever but if any of us are going to have arguments like this for the rest of the thread why don't we just do it in PMs rather than clogging up the board.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

Oh I also forgot to mention that Dan said last night that he and Monica (his fiance) were suppose to be on season 9 but Monica got cold feet at the last minute. Jen and Ryan were their replacements.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

Actually habibi, I don't like the idea of silencing these kinds of discussions because I think they are healthy and important to be had and they emanate organically from something said on the show. The previous off topic discussion that I became uncomfortable with had to do with me personally (and aijalon too) -- that to me was inappropriate. But this? This isn't off topic at all. I think it would be wrong not to talk about important issues that emerge from the show, and I applaud even those I have disagreed with on this issue (FalconFan, BlackWolf, and now aijalon) for at least having the balls to talk about it rather than pretend none of this exists.

However I expect there to be a warning soon so I will refrain from going further. This board in particular has a hard time discussing race issues probably because it reveals things that most of its participants would not like it to reveal about some on this board.

That's precisely how I feel hun  No point going on because we're just going ot be scolded .

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

I edited out my, just saw that. I knew it was something middle eastern, I figured it was like love or dear.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

Now this is a statement of fact ;)

Man I hate April, and could her conversation on the last episode with Ollie be more dopey? Self help books?? And I love that these two thought they were forging some deep connection when it's really like watching a conversation between two blocks of cheese.

Whenever I listen to Brian he tears April to SHREDS. She's just such a fucking easy target. He time will come though. I feel like her and Jessie in the same room equates to the absolute zero of IQ.

What amuses me most is (I don't know how much you get to see the feeds) but she is CONVINCED that America loves her and thinks that Angie is a bitch.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

It's an Arabic term of endearment that means "beloved" and I use it for dear, close friends like FalconFan. And my boyfriend, lol.

So what are your thoughts on Angie/Memphis strategy session I posted last night?

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

Ok, I totally agree that Libra's comments were racist and she should be ashamed of herself -- and unfortunately aijalon, I think you undermined the validity of your moral outrage in previous posts by not taking a firm stance against Libra's comments -- but, Blackwolf I disagree with

1) the assertion that "reverse racism" or "white racism" is the same because it's not. I really don't want to get deeply into this debate again, but there is a difference between making generalizations about a group of people (which is wrong, I agree) and deep-seated, historic and socio-economic reasons behind institutionalized racism, a history of racism, xenophobia and white notions of beauty etc. In other words, white people in America are the dominant culture and as such, it is different when someone makes a joke about white people as when someone makes a joke about a person of color. One group (people of color) have to bear the burden of representation because they are not seen as individuals by the dominant culture. When a white man commits a crime or does or says something heinous, it's all on him. But when a person of color does it, it's a burden for the whole race. And only one group (people of color) has to deal with those comments stemming from a history of marginalization, inequality, power dynamics etc. White people in America do not have a history of slavery, of Japanese internment camps, of being called towel-heads or terrorists just for being brown, of exploitated labor due to immigration laws, of losing their land and having their people erased in a genocide, of a terrible Holocaust.* It's a completely different social phenomenon and it may not be "fair" to white people, but hey, so much is unfair to the other side that we really can't complain. We can't demand equal outrage when the playing field was never equal to begin with and was always -- and we should never forget this -- always tilted in favor of the white dominant culture (a culture I belong to, but I can still see these problems for what they are).

2) the assertion that Steven "explained it all away." I don't care what Steven said to justify it, it was racist dude. We've been through this before. I don't think it makes Steven a horrible person or anything, but it does make him racist and I'm disappointed that we keep letting him off the hook just because he was a white gay man...but I'm not shocked. Nope. Not shocked at all. I've been on this board long enough to know that for most people here, racism will always have to be obvious to be identified and even so, it can be easily overlooked if the person is gay. Again, I'm not saying Steven committed an unforgivable sin, but let's not pretend it wasn't racist. The explanation about Jerry did not make it OK for him to continue to refer to Libra as "colored." And hello? The Mexican/Black joke he made? That the cop would be the driver? That was outright racist.

All this said, I think Libra has proven she is equally offensive and racist and aijalon, you lose major points for also trying to overlook that. What she said was offensive to another minority race group, not to the dominant culture. And she should be equally held accountable as Steven was. I've said this before but principles only mean something if you stick by them when they are inconvenient. You cannot be upset at Steven making racist comments against a minority group but then be OK when Libra does it against a minority group. And vice versa. And I know you're going to say you don't let her off the hook, but the fact remains, when the issue was first brought up (about her racist comments), you were very careful not to call her out on it. You need to understand that women, gays and people of color can be just as bad towards (and for) other women, gays and people of color, as the dominant culture has been. If you're going to decry racism, then it has to be a universal maxim (insofar as we agree that true racism is when it appears against a minority race group and not the dominant culture) -- it has to be NOT OK when racist comments are made by anyone about any minority race group. Otherwise you concede the moral highground. I guess what I'm saying is

Aijalon, you're wrong to overlook Libra's racist comments and

Blackwolf, you're wrong to overlook Steven's racist comments.

(* I mentioned the Holocaust because only in America are Jews considered "white." I assure you in Europe and everywhere else in the world, this is not the case. And anyway, in America it was a fairly recent historical phenomenon to expand the term white to Jews, Italians and Irish.)

No I think she is wrong. She's a fuckin idiot for saying racist shit about Angie. It's not like her and Angie are friends so she can't pass it off as a joke. I wouldnt say that shit. I was saying personally that it is less offensive to me when another minority makes these comments. But in general it shouldnt be said. Just like black ass bitch, that shit can't be dismissed as "just a comment."

Falcon I really dont wanna have a race war all the time either but new things keep coming up in the house. It leads the discussion in many directions. Just like if Steven's sexuality might do the same if he was still in the house. It is all relevant.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

Do you even read the things we post anymore dear, or do you just hit "Reply" when you see something addressed to you? :-) Because I totally disagreed in my original post with your statement that it's less offensive when a minority says something racist about another minority. Because it isn't. I'd bet the farm that if Angie had made racist comments about Libra, you wouldn't have found it "less offensive." The truth is, you're subjecting Libra to a lower standard because 1) she's black and 2) you like her (and I'm beginning to wonder if those two points are mutually exclusive where you are concerned)

You're criticizing her now because someone else pointed out the hypocrisy, but you didn't when it first came up and you still defend her with a timorous response like "It's less offensive because she's a minority too." If you're going to call out racism when you see it -- and you should -- then it has to be a universally applied maxim (again, NOT including "white" racism which I already explained I don't think really exists in the U.S. in quite the same way -- and certainly not with the same damaging consequences).

But all of this was already covered in my previous post.
No! I get what you are saying. I do read your posts even if they are long winded. I'm saying how I personally feel when another minority says things like that to ME. I personally take less offense. Especially if it is friend and we're kinda joking with eachother. But if any stranger says that shit to me it would be a problem.

Libra is equally wrong. She IS no different than Steven. I dont like Libra that much tbqh. I just felt like hate for her was way overblown. I wouldnt invite her to a BBQ or anything.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

I can't believe Dan in the house is the same Dan that made that ridiculous audition tape. He's so nice and sensitive and open-minded in the house. I wonder if this nice guy peacemaker is just game. I remember last season Sharon kept up a facade for her entire stint in the house. If it is, he's damn good.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

Nik2, no offense buddy but your posts are like trying to read those little inserts in my bank statements that tell me the changes and fees and legalities. Too long. But others like it so I'm cool in trying to scan them for information I might like.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

Who did what in a where now? LOL. I'll go back and look.

FalconFan, you and I should totally start a BB website and post feed updates and gameplay/strategy theories, especially your thesis on floaters, lol. I also would have enjoyed being the first site to figure out the key to Keesha (i.e. she doesn't like being told what to do). :D

It's post #2031 page 81. I was typing it up as the race war started so i think it got a bit over looked. Either way I think it's some interesting, interesting stuff.

As for a site of my own... I don't have that kinda patience.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

It's also Renny's birthday today. The houseguests all gathered at midnight to wish her happy birthday and etc. M/M/J/A came inside and it was silently awkward. Then when they left Libra bitched about how they were TOO nice to Renny.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

Is your bad spelling part of being dyslexic? Because it was post # 2013, not 2031 lol (*8*) (love you)

Anyway, I think it's a great strategy but...has Angie had a direct talk with Dan about this? Because Dan does what's best for Dan (as he should) and this tactic also seems to require him to know things he may not know. So I think Angie needs to be direct with Dan and mention all the ways this will help his game as well.

Either way it's a great tactic for Angie, and it's a great tactic for Memphis if his goal is to keep Angie. But see I wonder -- as much as I would love to see Angie stay -- is it really in Memphis' best interest to keep Angie? I mean if Jesse stays at least a few more weeks, that keeps the "big physical threat" target off of Memphis, you know? If they're ever nominated together, you know Memphis will survive. So either he's overlooking the safety Jesse provides him or he's just playing Angie...or he's attracted to her and thinking with his dick?

Well what it comes to is this

1.) Jessie and Michelle are morons and horrible company.
2.) The same way Angie is irrationally a target this week... she will
irrationally be people's target next week for some people.
3.) Jessie and Michelle have each other's back. It's always kinda
negative to be low man in an alliance

Memphis has been in generally remaining rather neutral. I think he sees the pros and cons of each side and is leaving it to the house.

Angie plans on talking to Dan today. I think her concern is that if it does flip she doesn't want to give it time to flip back so she's hoping it'll happen over the course of a day (though in actuality it's two)

Which leads me to wonder why they haven't told them that the eviction day has been moved. I'm wondering if there IS a twist coming if it'll come Wed.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

Twist Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As per TVguide.com America's Player is Back

I for one HATE America's player but the loss of all the fan favorites has prompted Grodner to take annoying and uncreative action. Apparently we get to choose America's Player tonight. (I'd lay you odds it's Dan)

I FOR ONE hope that A. It's Keesha. B. We have time to save Angie.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

OMG, they're bringing back America's Player? No shit?!?!?!?!

What if the person we vote for gets evicted Tuesday? Will the second highest vote-getter become America's Player?

Beat you to it Soapy :P

I just wish we could influence this weeks vote :(

I'm choosing Keesha as AP. She's competent and tolerable. I don't want Dan to get it. America will screw up his game entirely.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

I have noticed that Jessie prays before he eats. I don't think his praying in the yard after a quake is against his nature. Never been in a quake but I might be on my hands and knees praying for something too.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

While I want Dan to get it, I do have to admit America would fuck up his game, and possibly paint a big target on his back.

But really, when you think about it. Renny is going to get the first AP. Then probably Dan after her. As for me, I don't know who I am going to vote for.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

Ugh... the CBS press release says that this is only for one week.

OMG that makes it worse and even MORE pointless. This is horrible. It's not going to be done soon enough to save Angie and it's going to completely pointless if certain people win HOH because AP won't be able to dissuade them from anything.

Re: The Official "Big Brother 10" Discussion Threa

I'm sorry Nik... people seem to like Dan lol. I feel this season will be like season 6 as far as having pretty clear and universal like/don't like lines.
