Re: Favorite Madonna song?

Oh Father. One of Madonna's most personal songs and one of her most artistic videos. It's amazing to me that Madonna had the balls to put out this song as a single and even more amazing that she was so huge in 1989 that it went top 20 on her name alone and was considered a "flop."

I love this song and video. I think it was about her own father, wasn't it? It was the 4th single from "Like A Prayer" and went to #20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Never knew some considered it a "flop", I think it's a great song and should get played at her concerts and other appearances.

Re: Favorite Madonna song?

It was a flop relative to the time because it went to "only" #20 when all of her previous singles after "Holiday" charted much higher. But if you look at it the other way, it shows how big Madonna was at the time because if anybody else had put out an autobiographical song with that many layers (with one of them being about a parent being abusive to his child) and with that video to match it, it would have sunk on arrival.

Other "Madonna flops" that were goddamn amazing songs and videos: Bad Girl, Bedtime Story, Human Nature. Seriously, she followed up her biggest chart hit in America of all-time with THIS:

This is why I love 90's Madonna. No fucks were given. "Oh, you liked my little duet with Babyface, huh? Here, have a video that shows me giving birth doves and ends with me having an eye for a mouth. Ta!"

Re: Favorite Madonna song?

Love "Holiday" too - actually I love most of her songs.

Re: Favorite Madonna song?

Rain, and This used to be my playground. very soothing songs.

Love the song, scared of the video. I love how in 1994, she was going with the futuristic angle in "Bedtime Story" and "Human Nature".

Love "Holiday" too - actually I love most of her songs.

The music video for "Holiday" seems to be missing from her music videography, but it's on YouTube and rare to come across.

"Rain" is very soothing. "This Used To Be My Playground" reminds me of my childhood as well, the innocence of it all.

Vogue because I like to think I'm Anne Hathaway in devil wears prada when I hear it

Re: Favorite Madonna song?

Vogue, Like A Prayer and Borderline.

Some of these were "flops" not because they weren't great songs but more often because they were released during times when there was a Madonna backlash.

There's a nice remake of Bad Girl done by Boy George:

Re: Favorite Madonna song?

I like Madonna, not religiously but enough to like some of her tunes.

Ones I like;

Like a Prayer
Deeper and Deeper
Frozen
Ray of Light
Live to Tell
Nothing Really Matters
The Power of Goodbye

Re: Favorite Madonna song?

I like Borderline because it is not so tiresome like most others:

I'll give you "Bad Girl" but the other two were coming off the wake of her biggest hit single to date in America ("Take a Bow" which was #1 for seven weeks). "Bedtime Story" was just a radio-unfriendly song with an abstract video that made no sense to release at all, much less after "Take a Bow," and Human Nature was irreverent, unapologetic and by that point the momentum from Secret and Take a Bow were gone anyway.

Not to seem like I'm criticizing her though. Like I already said, I love that she followed up her biggest American hit with the WTF? factor of Bedtime Story. It's just such a mid-period Madonna statement. "Fuck it, I'm doing it anyway."
