Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

She didn't sound great there. And Shakira was fucking TERRIBLE. Who the hell invited her?

I still think Mariah sounded good the second half of Hero.
Also, she coulda been nervous. I got this off of mariahdaily.com

• Fox News: And even after all these years in the spotlight, it turns out that Mariah Carey was feeling a bit of fear prior to her inauguration performance. Before heading to D.C., Carey spent the weekend at Sundance promoting her film "Push" but Pop Tarts overheard her talking about how nervous she was to sing "Hero" at the momentous event. "Everyone was calming her down, telling her she would be great," said our spy at the "Push" luncheon, held at Coca-Cola’s Taste of Film Festival at the Stein Eriksen Lodge.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

Well, from a Mariah fan standpoint, it's the best you're gonna get from her in a live performance, so it's 'good' to us LOL

And Shakira, I love her but my GOD she just sounds terrible when shes not singing her own songs. LOL

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

I definitely agree with the sentiments about Mariah. I do not know if she lost her place, if she was not focused, or if she simply was not feeling the song, but she did not seem comfortable singing Stevie Wonder's song.

As far as Shakira is concerned, she actually has a great tone, but it's an unusual tone. Her voice definitely works for her own style of music, but once she steps outside of that, it clashes. Even when the host asked Obama about Shakira's solo performance, he said "It has a certain ring to it."

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

Mariah definitely seemed off in her part in Stevie Wonder's song. I cannot tell if she just was not focused, she lost her place, or if she was not singing the song, but it showed. The hand gestures definitely were not helping...

As far as Shakira, she has a great tone, but it's simply unusual. Her voice only works on material constructed for her, but her voice definitely clashes when trying others material. After Shakira performed a cover last night, the female host asked Obama about the performance and he said, "It has a certain ring to it." I think that was just his delicate way of saying that he did not care for her voice.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

I should've been more specific. Christina's performances as of late have been fine. However, during the Stripped era, she was having vocal issues, which were reported.

I agree, but maybe the songs weren't as easy to sing? Just a thought.

I know that her performance at the VMAs in 2003 was terrible! The Dirrty/Fighter medley I'm talking about...
But then again, she sounded great on tour.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

She's only sharp because most of the high notes during the last part of the song were completely lip-synced.

lmao. yeah...any time she sounds remotely good, she's lipsyncing  I'm not the least bit surprised coming from a Christina Aguilera fan.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

I thought she was terrible last night at the Inaugural Ball.

Oh this is gold to me! GOLD!!!

What a disgraceful performance. It's not nerves (when will people stop throwing that pathetic excuse around?), it's simply her voice being in a completely shitty condition and her being stubborn in not admiting it and keeping on abusing her voice even more beyond repair.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

I agree.

For the first 8 - 10 years of her career, she sounded great. I'm sure there were times she was nervous then, right? But she still sounded great. It's no coincidence that she sucks pretty much everytime she gets on stage these days. Is nerves the excuse everytiime? LoL Oh, and what about that shiteous re-recorded version of "Hero?" Scared of the studio mic?

She suffered from stage fright actually. She was a nerve wreck when she came out. You could hear, in her voice, how nervous she was...her voice would shake 'n everything but she'd still bring the house down 'cause her voice was in perfect shape.

It's getting worse and worse because she doesn't adapt her singing style to the current capabilities of her voice, therefore, she keeps on forcing and abusing her voice. One of these days, she's gonna wake up with 3 notes left of vocal range. lol

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

Some here say Christina's performances in the last few months have been flawless? Well, she lipped through most of her performance at the VMAs and at the AMAs she did a fair amount of shouting.

She's still at the top of the vocalists currently (both male and female), but I want to see more passion and emotion, not runs on each syllable.

I love American Idol, but because of this damn show, I think the nation has become obsessed with high notes and vocal acrobats.

PREACH!!! Ever since the Idol era began, people have become more and more obssessed with high notes and vocal acrobatics. Many immediately equate high notes and vocal acrobatics with being a great singer. Simon Cowell is partially to be blamed...he only sees the technical side of singing...any singer that goes there and sings pretty with high notes and acrobatics he calls her a great singer. Ugh!#-o

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

I think she's probably one of those people who absolutely refuses to admit that her voice isn't what it used to be, and in her eyes it would be like admitting failure to "adapt her singing style" to what her voice can handle now.

It all boils down to her EXTREME need of approval and praise from other people. For many years, she was praised as being one of the best voices in the world...that does a lot of ego stroking and if that coincides with an extremely insecure person who needs a lot of approval from others the result is never pretty.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

I ♥ Mariah, but I miss her vocal abilities. But E=MC2 was still a hot album anyway. :)

I don't know. I think the trend began before American Idol and American Idol is just reaffirming vocal ideals.

I mean it began with Whitney really...and Mariah's prime was a long time before American Idol....

I think American Idol's just standardized pop so much that it hasn't really changed (a little darker, a little more dancy but that's about it).

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

^I agree. You can't really blame American Idol for people trying to be like their respective 'Idols'. There are a number of factors to blame.

I'd like to blame today's lack of true great voices. No one wants to be like Rihanna or Britney Spears. They want to be like people everyone generally consider to be the best.

Indeed it began before American Idol but right now it seems the worst that it's ever been. Before, acrobatics, vocal range and such things were indeed valued, probably too much already...but after shows like Idol came up, it seems that it's gotten worse. People, generally speaking, seem completely obssessed with such things. I see it, specially on youtube all the time, if a singer hits a certain note higher than another singer, even if it's just by a semitone, that singer is immediately called as a superior singer. It's ridiculous!

I love notes, vocal ranges, acrobatics 'n all that stuff but I believe I know it's place when it comes to singing. Many people seem to think that being technical is all there is to singing.
