Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

^I agree. You can't really blame American Idol for people trying to be like their respective 'Idols'. There are a number of factors to blame.

I'd like to blame today's lack of true great voices. No one wants to be like Rihanna or Britney Spears. They want to be like people everyone generally consider to be the best.

Are you sure? 'Cause many teenage girls seem to look up to them and aspire to be like them one day...wich is really sad.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

I understand what you mean but no one wants to say I want to sing like Britney Spears or Rihanna. They may say I want to look like them or dance like them but they don't say they want to sing like them.

And it is sad.

And to be honest, I was once one of those, 'Oh my god! She hit a whistle note! She must be the next great thing.' but I've grown out of it. I've gotten into a lot of different types of music, so my definition of great singer has grown.

IF they're really interested in singing then they won't turn to them as role models indeed. But I feel as though mediocrity rules today's voices in music, with a couple of exceptions.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

Well, I def agree with that last statement.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

I agree, but maybe the songs weren't as easy to sing? Just a thought.

Between her touring schedule and the fact that she abuses her voice, Christina was bound to have vocal problems. She was only in her early twenties during the Stripped Era. In addition, Christina also suffered from the Whitney Houston/Toni Braxton syndrom as well. These females know how to sing enough to get the notes out, but for one reason or another, they feel the need to add a trembling jaw for extra effect when it's really damaging their voices. The voice is a very sensitive instrument.

Indeed it began before American Idol but right now it seems the worst that it's ever been. Before, acrobatics, vocal range and such things were indeed valued, probably too much already...but after shows like Idol came up, it seems that it's gotten worse. People, generally speaking, seem completely obssessed with such things. I see it, specially on youtube all the time, if a singer hits a certain note higher than another singer, even if it's just by a semitone, that singer is immediately called as a superior singer. It's ridiculous!

I definitely disagree. Many people do not care about vocal range or power. The people who tend to value unusual abilties are those people who understand vocal pedagogy. However, the average person typically does not care.

Oh yes they do...many do. They don't have the knowledge or education but they hear a singer who has a belting type of voice and they immediately praise her as an amazing singer. And then there are those who've read a few things about notes on the internet and think they have a major in music or something. You wouldn't believe the amount of nonsense I've heard people say...constantly...weither in real life, television or on the internet. All the time, I hear many many people UNEDUCATED about vocal pedagogy caring about such things.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

lmao. yeah...any time she sounds remotely good, she's lipsyncing  I'm not the least bit surprised coming from a Christina Aguilera fan.

I'm a Christina fan, but Mariah's my #1. So don't go using that excuse on MOI.

The high notes were liiipped. No doubt. She rarely lip-syncs the whistles, though, which is nice.

Uh huh, it's sad that teenagers idolize somebody who has sold 80 million albums.

No, what's sad is to idolize someone who's sold 80 million albums but with little talent to back up those sales. That's what's sad.

As I said, it seems some Mariah "fans" think anytime Mariah sounds decent, she's lipsyncing. There's plenty of evidence she was not, if you actually LISTEN to the performance. And if you can't tell the difference, that's your fault.

And to whoever said Christina is still the top vocalist....LMFAO ok! Keep dreamin'! I could name at least 5 people who sing better than she does currently.

Well, you and I simply run in different circles. If anything, people to whom I've talked will certainly give respect to people who have unusual abilities, but they tend to prefer your average singers over your Rachelle Farrells, Luther Vandrosses, and Whitney Houstons.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

Luther Vandross.

You know, when people list phenomenal talents, this is one that I rarely see! And I could not agree more. It was a sad day when he passed and when you look back on his extensive catalogue, it brings back a lot of great memories. The song that he has sang that has meant the most to me, is Dance With My Father. What an amazing song. And that, to me, sums up the extraordinary catalogue that is behind is legacy. Truly a phenomenal talent.

Yeah, I really think that people tend to forget about men in singing. Some of it is understandable as there are not men amazing male singers anyway, but Luther was definitely a singer's singer. His version of A House Is Not A Home, especially the live version at the NAACP Awards, will never be matched.

On a side note, your picture in your signature reminds me that it is rumored that J-Lo was apparently trying to contact Mariah Carey. J-Lo wants to record with Mariah Carey so that J-Lo can make a comeback; she, J-Lo, wants a hit.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

LMAO! Mariah would NEVER do that. Jennifer has talked so much smack about her, yeah, its about as likely as a Mariah-Madonna duet!!!

I'd be interested to see it, though. But I'd see nothing but disaster come from it. People still said Whitney and Mariah hate each other even when they were on stage singing together...

Re: The worst Mariah Carey album?

Worst album goes to Glitter.

Worst studio album goes to Rainbow.

Re: The worst Mariah Carey album?

I think Glitter is horrible.

I'm a huge mariah fan but think glitter was terrible. the only good song was the remake "didn't mean to turn you on."

I also am sick of her compilation albums. too many: "Unplugged", "#1's", Greatest Hits, Now on t.v. there's a commercial showing a release of the "ballads", another compilation album.

so ridiculous. weird.

oh, back to glitter, just horrible. the song written with rick james was okay, but seriously, I couldn't name any songs other than didn't mean to turn you on.

Re: The worst Mariah Carey album?

^^Most of those were to fulfill an album obligation to her then record labels. And, Sony can release as many as they want to. I have no doubt that The Ballads wasn't her idea, but that of Sonys. Rather than fight it, promote it. And I can't believe people think Glitter is her worst album. Wow. Makes me wonder what album you all were listening to cause it definitely wasn't the one I purchased.

Anyway, CHARMBRACELET is her worst record to date, hands down.

from my understanding, the two disc "greatest hits" fulfilled her obligation to sony. I think if that's the case, as i understand it, this newest one is just sony capitalizing on her popularity over the years. and yes, I understnad that mariah was against the greatest hits and perhaps was against this one as well ("ballads").

but, glitter is horrible. Charmbracelet had some bad songs but also had some great songs.

to date, IMO --- her best release was Emancipation, then Mariah Carey then Butterfly.

Re: The worst Mariah Carey album?

Glitter and charmbracelet for me

Re: The worst Mariah Carey album?

My Top 3 of her worst albums:
1 - E=MC2
2 - Music Box
3 - The Emancipation of Mimi
