You're right, she writes her own songs but that doesn't make you a legend at all!
What makes you a legend is if you changed the music, did something that noone has done ect.. Nobody in the industry will call Mariah a legend. Whitney on the other hand is a living legend along with Madonna Barbra and Michael (well he's not a living legend anymore)

And about the black thing, she's like 5% black or so cause her daddy is from Venezuela, he's not african american. So i know my shit, seems like you need to learn somethings yourself!

See, this is why EDUCATING YOURSELF is important. If you were properly educated on the facts , you would know that Whitney Houston was the FIRST female artist to debut at #1 (an incredibly huuuuuuge accomplishment!). You would also know that Whitney was the first female artist to have 3 number 1 singles from one album. In addition to that you would know that Whitney Houston was the first female artist to have TWO diamond certified albums. Among other things. But google IS your friend, ya know. Use it.

And the fact that she was "first" for a lot of things simply means that her importance in the music industry is much greater than Mariah Carey's. She broke down walls, changed the game and PAVED the way for people like Mariah to even have that kind of success as a female artist. So her legacy will forever be greater than Mariah's, kiddo. Like Davenavarrolover said, the FIRST will always be remembered...more so than someone who comes along and does the same thing AFTER you, like in the case of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. The "first" person is always more important than the second, third, forth ect person, because the fact that you were the first to be able to achieve that kind of success in the first place and accomplish those things when NO ONE ELSE was at the time -- is something that holds more importance and will be forever remembered and celebrated in history.

Do yourself some good and educate yourself on the facts.

That's over a month. She's already had her time at the top for weeks. You also forgot to mention she's STILL hanging around at the top of almost EVERY OTHER CHART.

Mariah's album was JUST RELEASED yesterday and STILL hasn't been at #1.

Whitney has been #1 on Billboard, iTunes, Amazon, Walmart, Target, Barnes & Noble, FYE, Tower, ect.

You also forgot to mention Whitney's #4 on the BILLBOARD chart this week (the chart that matters the most, unlike iTunes). FIVE weeks after its release, mind you. That's aaawesome!

Paramore, the Fueled by Ramen punk-rock group whose 360-deal with WMG through Atlantic Records has proven a successful new model, look headed for a #1 debut on next week's HITS Album sales chart, based on one-day sales reports from those retailers who still take our calls.

Brand New Eyes, the third studio album from the band, fronted by lead vocalist Hayley Williams, takes an early lead in the race with a one-day sales total that projects to 180-190k for the week. That gives them the edge over Island/IDJ diva Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, which is now on target for 160-170k. Rock on Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd's latest, God and Guns, on Roadrunner's Loud and Proud label, looks for an opening week total of 30-40k, same as Williams Street virtual death metal group Dethklok, from Adult Swim's animated Metalocalypse series.


American/Columbia Rick Rubin-produced roots rockers Avett Brothers round out the debuts with 25-30k for their major label bow, I and Love and You.

The market was down 4% vs. last week, down 7% vs. same week last year and still down 14% year to date.

Your lame contribution to a lame thread of complaints has been noted.

For the record, she was inspired by Minnie Riperton's album from 1974, entitled "Perfect Angel", for her new album's title. Just a little tidbit I thought I'd pass along to the hopelessly and violently ignorant.

It doesn't really matter if it's a reference if the execution fails.

It sounds like a title for a crappy Yaoi Anime.

While I find "Perfect Angel" to be a perfectly fine title, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" makes me want to projectile vomit. And not out of any personal hatred for MC.

Hopelessly and violently ignorant? Sir, ease up on that attack button of yours, it doesn't help your cause to magically infer the supposed intentions of others from the ether.

What on earth was I thinking? I'm glad "Perfect Angel" meets your no doubt stringent requirements for album titles, and I can clearly see how the addition of "Memoirs of an Im..." is just so egregiously wrong that it is just unfathomable

And yes, padding the sentiment with over an extra 100% of words does alter its effect.

If I had to pick a single point, it would be "Memoirs", it sounds additionally pretentious and self-referential.

And when "Angel" is the subject, lets be honest, that really isn't needed.

And before you go on about that being my perception, part of art is always interpretation, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that interpretation.

And yes if your Britney or Madonna or Rihanna or even Beyonce then miming is not a bad thing. When you actually have talent (like Mariah had one day) then it's unneccesary to mime. When Mariah came out in the 90's i loved her, she was singing and was pretty too. Then she decided to change everything and act like a tramp (i'm sorry but what selfrespecting almost 40 years old woman would dress like that) and change her music and started whispering instead singing. I think that's a shame cause her first three or four albums are still great to this day. But ever since Butterfly she hasn't released a decent album.

Mariah most certainly is a legend, and a living one at that. Her success (in terms of #1 songs, among others), her technical voice skills, her songwriting, her album sales, and other things have contributed to her being considered the greatest female artist of our time. You can dislike her all you want and childishly criticize her, as you and other unmentionables have been doing, but you will never take anything away from her, her accomplishments, or her status in music history. Never.

Most of you need to learn some damn respect. That's really what this comes down to. The things you are saying, the hatred and the animosity you are showing towards someone you don't even know, is incredibly revolting and disgusting. At first I could accept that the criticisms had some merit, but the things being said in this thread toward Mariah are just horrible and juvenile. I won't bother clicking on this thread anymore to see what people are saying. I really don't want to read it anymore. One day, you'll learn how to treat people correctly and stop bashing them and their lives, and stop being heinously jealous of their accomplishments and success.

Wow! What could have happened in only seventeen months time? Mariah's previous album, E=MC2, debuted to 463,000 copies sold in the first week. Now, Mariah's critically panned Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is set to sell between 160,000 to 170,000 copies. She likely won't top the charts.

It's quite possible that Mariah's lambs will put all their life savings towards helping the album sell more. But for now, here are some answers to why Mariah has fallen.

Bad music - How many "We Belong Together" clones can Mariah come up with?
Style - People are sick and tired of the 40 going on 14 look. Mariah needs to act her age.
Her PR team - It's good that Mariah fired her previous public relations team. Her apology after she screeched her way through Michael Jackson's memorial seemed more about her than Michael Jackson.
Her talent - Mariah's voice has become a shadow if its former self. She has replaced singing with screeching and whispering.
There's always hope for Mariah: Coffe houses are always looking to hire singers to keep their customers happy. Since Mariah was barely able to fill a 2,000 seat show in Las Vegas, this may be a good idea for her.

Mariah Carey seems to be facing a backlash lately that is similar to what she faced back in 2001 with Glitter. It's hard to zero in on one thing, but here are some factors that are contributing to Mariah's demise.



E=MC2 Commercial Disappointment - Months before the original release date for her upcoming album, Mariah had already been receiving bad buzz. Just before the release of the single “Obsessed,” many have noted that many of Mariah Carey’s previous singles from E=MC2, an album Mariah released in April of 2008, have performed poorly.

After the number one hit “Touch My Body,” the single “Goodbye” peaked at number 19, and the rest of the singles from the album failed to make the top 40. For someone known for scoring hits, this is considered a major disappointment

Mariah Carey at Michael Jackson Memorial

Some have suggested that Mariah Carey used Michael Jackson’s memorial to promote the single “Obsessed” since it was released to iTunes the same exact morning. Overall, Mariah has received a lot of negative publicity for her performance of the Jackson 5 hit, “I’ll Be There.” Many have concluded that Mariah Carey has lost her singing ability.

Actually, I'd say it's more comparible to what she faced with Charmbracelet. In 2001, she was acting strange, and her album tanked amidst a flurry of negative publicity around her latest album and movie (which didn't stay in the headlines long, what with what else happened that month). She was close to being a punchline. In 2002, she put out Charmbracelet, and...well, nothing. The reviews were tepid (although some were pretty harsh), and she just didn't seem to be getting any coverage. That seems more like what's going on now. The reviews I've read haven't been "OMG what was she thinking". They've just been "enh", and whereas I couldn't get on a website or pick up a magazine without seeing Ms Houston the last two months, I've barely seen Mariah at all. Two of my friends didn't know Mariah had a new album out...and they work in a record store. I'm thinking that may be a major contribution to the lack of sales - a lack of promotion. Not that I want it promoted.

I bought Mariah's new CD and am really enjoying listening to it. Don't like all the tracks but the ones I do like, I like a lot. I think she makes great music. I like Whitney too. I enjoy a lot of the other female front runners also. Never understood the whole pitting them against each other as to who's better. It's totally an individual preference. So if somebody likes Madonna and doesn't like Mariah.....who cares? That only makes Madonna better to that person. So much tripping on here about Mariah, Madonna, Whitney!

I am really starting to get pissed at all you lame ass haters.
funnily enough most Fans (the people buying the music) have great things to say about the album & if it does not make any new Mariah fans than so be it.

The fact that she tops every other chick in the game seems to be a thing people use against her now....
just so people know (in case you forgot) it is quite normal for an album to start lower & build in sales & chart success.

Its like if she doesn't debut at #1 it's a failure & that is just plain rude....do you know how hard that is???
(plus its been done already, a handful of times thank you)


I will say that the promotion has been here & there and very under the radar but if it were any other way haters would be saying she's too in your face.

This album owns all of you, so suck it.
