Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!

I was talking about SexyKev in that particular comment.

But since you believe Whit has a "better" voice than Mariah (not sure what that means, BTW), I guess it applies to you, as well.

To me, "better" means technical skill, but also other factors like warmth and "pleasantness", and last but not least the way the singer uses the voice. Mariah has an unfortunate love for reaching for notes well outside her comfort zone, as well as whispering too much.

Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!

No, it's because you're unfair. You hijacked this thread and filled it with nonsense about Whitney, like she even matters here. Like I said, you are really insecure about Whitney, or else you wouldn't be here trying to tell the lambs how great she apparently is. You don't stick to unfavorable facts about Whit - you ignore them and keep shitting on Mariah and making up new ways to insult her. So yeah, you obviously have an inferiority complex.

Whatever. I'm far from being insecure about ANYTHING. Especially Whitney. ..|

You lambs are the ones insecure about your whispering, lip synching diva. Always trying to say "No, that was totally live!" whenever she performs and CLEARLY lip synchs. Who are y'all tryin to fool? Yourselves? !oops!

Agreed.....

Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!

She's an alto with soprano capabilities. Sometimes the high chest notes are there, sometimes they aren't. Like other singers, she can belt and push her voice to reach the notes, but they are still within her comfort zone. Regarding technical skills, they are two different singers. Mariah can do things with her voice (not JUST the whistle register) that Whitney couldn't dream of doing, and vice versa.

As for warmth and plesantness, that's entirely subjective, and I don't agree that Whit is better in that regard. Not at all.

And that's okay. I've tried to make it very clear that my thoughts are OPINIONS and not FACTS, which seems to be a real problem for the people in this thread to differentiate between.

Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!

If you're not insecure, then why are you here? I've noticed you trashing Mariah on other threads, as well. Yes, you are insecure about Whitney and her status. You are threatened by Mariah and have an axe to grind. Nothing you say now will ever change my perception of that.

Um, if you say so, kiddo. I really couldn't care less what you think. ;)

Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!

Truth is, I think you both care what the other thinks. Which is why you annoy each other so much.

Hardly.

I'm not even annoyed by him. He's annoyed by me though. Why? Because he knows I make sense and he's getting frustrated. And if you can't handle the heat I'm giving, then stay out of the kitchen (or your ass will be grilled).

Lamb stew, anyone? :D

Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!

Mariah should not be releasing this cd. She knows it and the label knows it. Why else has it been pushed back 3 times? Its not a strong release and I doubt this will be the cd to put her back on top.
Her last cd didnt fair that well and 3 singles from it all bombed. I think Mariah would be best in taking some time off and coming back fresh. Yet she is releasing a cd that is clearly in trouble. The reviews are not good for this cd and with Madonna and Barbara Striesand both releasing cd's on the same day. It just makes it tougher for a cd that doesnt sound strong to reach the masses.
My question to the lambs in this thread is this. Why has Mariah never toured? Do you think its maybe because she is a boring performer? I mean who would pay to see her standing on stage with a fan blowing through her weave as she is posed so only one side of her face shows?
My opinion is the public has had enough of watching this 40 year old woman dressed in hello kitty and butterfly hair clips. Just look at her last singles sales. That alone tells the story.

lol agreed. ..|

This album is a mess. A bore. And even the NEW YORK TIMES is calling her and her non-singing, whispering ass out.

MARIAH CAREY
"Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel"
(Island)

When exactly did Mariah Carey stop singing? Even when she began flirting aggressively with hip-hop in the mid-1990s she was happy to impose her titanic vocals atop even the scrappiest production. And no matter how grimy her surroundings became - Ol' Dirty Bastard, anyone? - she remained inexorably Mariah, an impenetrable acrobat of technique.

Of late though, Ms. Carey has been whispering, as if newly scared of grand gestures. In 2005 it made for a surprise success with "The Emancipation of Mimi," one of her best-selling albums, but also one of her most deceptive. Though the melodies were straightforward, Ms. Carey was working hard, imbuing them with vulnerability and ache even while keeping her vocal power in check.

That nuance is mostly gone on "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," Ms. Carey's 12th studio album, which manages simplicity and clutter all at once. "Memoirs" is produced almost entirely by Ms. Carey with The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, who are masters of compensation, helping elevate mediocre singers - like The-Dream himself or Rihanna, on "Umbrella" - to something sublime.

On paper Ms. Carey shouldn't need that help, but her collaborators have underdelivered with largely listless arrangements just as she has thinned her voice to a hush. (The Dr. Dre-esque stomp of "Obsessed" is a notable exception.) On "Betcha Gon' Know (The Prologue)," she's almost mumbling, and the talk-singing on "Ribbon" and "Inseparable" is typically the preserve of far worse singers.

Even more troubling are the perplexing, jumbled lyrics full of daffy references and batty assertions. On the unintentionally hilarious "Up Out My Face," she insists, "Not even a nail technician/ with a whole lotta gel and acrylic/ can fix this, when I break, I break." On "Obsessed," she tells an ex, "See right through you like you're bathing in Windex." (Inexplicably, two songs, "Standing O" and "More Than Just Friends," echo "Umbrella," a move unnecessary and outdated.)

"H.A.T.E.U." has some of the ease of her recent successes, and "It's a Wrap" swings with girl-group melody. But it's the vintage notes here that resonate most intensely. She lets her voice go at the end of "Candy Bling," a cold splash of water that reminds us what Ms. Carey can do when left unfettered. The same is true of the smoldering "Languishing (The Interlude)," which despite its language of self-improvement seminars, is Ms. Carey at her most astute, devastatingly precise in tone and feeling; notably, it's the only song on this album untouched by Tricky and The-Dream.

It bleeds into the closer, a cover of Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is," that begins in surprisingly modest fashion. Then comes the gospel-choir backup and the glass-shattering high notes, restoring Ms. Carey to the role she was born for: a singer unafraid of pomp, of ambition, of herself. JON CARAMANICA

Wow that review was harsh lol. But its ironic that the song that is like is an interlude and the-dream had nothing to do with.

Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!

I usually dislike reviews like that one, because usually it seems like the critic is just being arrogant for the sake of being arrogant, but after listening to the album (and BARELY getting through it, my god, it's horrible) I have to say it's right on the money. Right on.

Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!

OK, so I just listened to the album, and was left with a feeling of "meh". It doesn't evoke any passionate feelings; neither hate nor love.

Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!

^^ LMAO. Are you serious? "BlackBookMag"? What the hell is that? No credibility whatsoever. !oops!

Sorry buddy, but the New York Times review trumps that one -- and its also read by MANY MANY people...unlike "BlackBookMag" with its 5 visitors. And the NYTimes review is saying the same thing most other reviews have been saying...or along the same lines of it. That the album has a few decent tracks but not many standouts (and would basically be a waste of money).

Its sad when the best song on the album is an INTERLUDE. Says a lot about the album as a whole. !oops!

Memoirs of an Imperfect Album

This week Mariah Carey will release her latest effort Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. This album marks her twelfth studio release and her first time working without Jermaine Dupri since they started collaborating. This album is primarily produced by The-Dream and Tricky Stewart as well as a few tracks by Big Jim Wright, most known for working alongside Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Memoirs is an introspective look at the stages of love. For the first time in a long time, her album features very few uptempo songs and no features. The album has more of a laid back R&B feel with Hip Hop-infused tracks. This album is about heartbreak, about your first time falling in love, getting the strength to leave and enjoying the fact that you are in love.

A few standouts:

"H.A.T.E.U." is vocally one of her best songs. She sounds amazing and the song is a true R&B ballad. She uses her upper register in this song as part of the melody of the chorus, instead of in the background in ad libs as she has done in the past.

"Impossible" is one of Mariah's sexiest and honest songs that she has done to date. Perhaps the only song that discusses her current relationship, she sings "you did the impossible, you rescued my love, you did the impossible, see I had almost given up." This song and its reprise give us a glimpse of just how much she loves Nick.

"It's A Wrap" is perhaps one of the most amazing tracks on the album. It has a throwback, Do Wop feel that really focuses on Mariah's vocals. It reminds me of the Mariah we might have heard during the Daydream era. She doesn't cheat and whisper-sing. She owns this track, and the lyrics are of the caliber we expect of her.

"Up Out My Face" is a fun, mid-tempo song that reminds me of "Shake It Off." In it she chunks up the deuce to an old boyfriend, reminding him, "When I break, I break, up out my face, boy." The reprise of this song features a marching band playing the instrumental of the song, which will surely get burn in many a college dorm across the country.

However, as the title of this review suggests, this album is plagued with imperfections.

The majority of the songs are rather boring love songs. Most of the songs seem like filler and fail to excite. We expect great songs and lyrics from Mariah and the writing on this album seems very elementary and just plain silly.

Songs like "Candy Bling," which feature an interpolation of Ahmad's "Back In The Day," sounds like the typical Dream song. She tries to convince us that this "feels like real love, not just play play." Like her movie Glitter, we just don't buy it. The first single "Obsessed," which comes near the beginning of the set, sticks out like a sore thumb given its sound and trite subject matter. Her rendition of "I Wanna Know What Love Is" does not live up to the original nor does it live it up to other covers she has done in the past. "More Than Just Friends," which contains a subtle interpolation of Notorious B.I.G.'s "One More Chance (Remix)" fails to move or inspire.

Mariah claims she wanted to work with different producers to avoid having a sound that is "stale or redundant," but at times this album sounds like just that. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel doesn't sound like the work of a 12-album veteran but rather an album that could have been sung by the likes of Leona Lewis or Jordin Sparks.

This album leaves one wondering why we are so obsessed with Mariah. It appears as though she's only interested in remaining relevant rather than making music that is on par with women of her success and talent (namely, Whitney Houston). I do feel like her partnership with The-Dream for the bulk of this album was a fail and that she should have switched it up more. Mariah may have had good intentions with Memoirs, but they didn't come out in the execution.

!oops!
