Re: Mariah Carey

Shanice is another Awesome singer and she doesnt have to lip-sync over her own pre-recorded vocals like Mariah does...You ever heard of Rachell Farrell? Rachell is another R&b/Jazz/Pop artist that can sing Baritone, Alto & Soprano and she can hit & sustain powerful Whistle notes...She'd "Murder" MiMi on any stage with a LIVE Mic...

Mariah's been using "whisper-vocals" for well over a decade now...Very rare that an artist loses the "grit" in his vocals at the age of 30...MiMi's not even 40 yet and her "Vocal prime" should be late 40's to early 50's...I wonder what she's gonna sound like when she hits 50?

Patti LaBelle is still throwing down at the age of 65...These young women need to get it together...

Shanice has no control over her whistle whatsoever, at least when I heard it. None. To the point I'd rather not want to hear it.

Mariah smokes, or at least used to. I don't think any of the other singers you mentioned have. Take that into account when you're gauging her "vocal prime", not to mention she has probably been overworked for approximately a decade more than those other singers. I never heard of anyone being in their vocal prime in their 40's-50's, more like 20's-30's. Patti does still have it, it's crazy.

Don't make up excuses for Mariah.."Oh she smoked, oh she overworked, oh she had a nervous break down, Oh she sufers from "Daisy-Duke" syndrome"....Sorry but the Legends can RUN CIRCLES around Mariah and many young Entertainers and the LEGENDS been Rockin & Rolling and having so many problems since the 60's...Excuses for Mariah will not work here..Sorry Dude...

Women that were in their Vocal Prime @ 4o..

Natalie Cole, Patti laBelle, Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Babs, Reba, Dolly, Linda Ronstadt, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Cher, Shirley Bassey...And the list goes on...

The BEST of the BEST still "had it" @ 40 and continued throwing down well into their 50's & 60's..Those are the Facts...Those up & coming young Women can't hang...LOL.....

I LOVE MiMi but she's 30-something and I know her declining lower-register made her nervous all these years. That is why she prefers to Lip-sync over pre-recorded vocals..I also Love Whitney Houston and @ 40 her LIVE vocals are a "hit or miss"..Her vocals are so badly damaged she's not certain whats gonna come out when she hits the stage...

MiMi & Whitney share that same fear when they sing LIVE...They are waaay too young to have "Cracked" singing vocals...

Re: Mariah Carey

What the...?

Rachell is another R&b/Jazz/Pop artist that can sing Baritone, Alto & Soprano and she can hit & sustain powerful Whistle notes...

Do you know where Baritone is on an instrument? Rachelle Farrell has never been able to sing Baritone.

Very rare that an artist loses the "grit" in his vocals at the age of 30...MiMi's not even 40 yet and her "Vocal prime" should be late 40's to early 50's.

That's also incorrect. A person's prime as a vocalist is in his or her 20s and 30s.

Patti LaBelle is still throwing down at the age of 65...These young women need to get it together...

Patti has lost some of her power. She still maintained her energy and her presence, but some of her power has gone as well.

Every bit of success she's had has been overtly orchestrated by a powerful svengali (Tommy Motolla, L.A. Reid, Benny Medina) who decided to make her his pet project. When she doesn't have a daddy deliberately pulling the strings and making under the table deals for her (like during her Virgin/Glitter years...and now...) and tries to go at it alone, she flops - embarrassingly.

Actually, most of her success has been when she cut ties with Mr. Motolla. She has been in the business for nearly two decades and she was with him about a fourth of her career. Sure, she has had some missteps, but what artist hasn't?

As you can tell, I don't like her.

Yeah, the subtlety shows.:D

Don't make up excuses for Mariah.."Oh she smoked, oh she overworked, oh she had a nervous break down

Those excuses are legitimate. She did smoke, she did (and probably does) drink heavily, and she had a heavy schedule. Other people you mentioned never toured as heavily as Mariah.

MiMi & Whitney share that same fear when they sing LIVE...They are waaay too young to have "Cracked" singing vocals...

Again, Mariah and Whitney toured heavily, did drugs, drank heavily and/or smoked. A person's voice can only endure so much. As far as Whitney is concerned, she also used bad technique at times, which is why she was not more consistent in her prime. Therefore, the fact that her voice stayed in such a good condition as long as it did is miracle.

Umm... I think that all those artists may have had great vocal in their 40s, but I wouldn't call it their "prime". Maybe they just had songs that showcased their vocals more, idk. Does it not make sense that someone's vocal ability would deteriorate as they age, not improve?

I think the only thing you prove here are the generational differences between these women. The older ones have probably had little to no drug use and preserved their vocals. Then you have the Mariah and Whitney generation, where drugs are more accessible and are more overworked because of the nature of the industry in their days. Now, we might see the Ciara's and Rihanna's vocals fried by the time they are 30 because of their drug use and everything in between.

Again, you can't even really compare. If Patti did drugs then we could, when Mariah is 60 that is.

There is no way you can compare Ciara and Rihanna to any of those other women. Those two can't sing.:grrr:

No it is not NORMAL for a singer to have declining vocal chords at the age of 30..Drugs were around before MiMi and Whitney were even thought about...Natalie Cole used Drugs during her day and survived the battle and came back stronger than ever...

Making excuses For Mariah is still not a selling point...If Mariah is still smoking the pipe then that would explain a lot..And please STOP using the "Over-Worked" excuse..Mariah Lip-syncs to pre-recorded tracks in Concerts and on TV shows..Her hair and make-up people work up more of a sweat...

Re: Mariah Carey

Most singers are in there prime in there 30's and 40's if they are singing correctly. Ella Fitzgerald is a good example of being in her prime when in her 30's and 40's. Mariah has been having vocal problems since Butterfly so I wonder if she was not singing correctly through out her career?

I'm not saying it is normal for vocals to decline at the age of 30, I'm just saying isn't it normal for vocals to decline as one ages (not at any specific age).

I don't feel like I am making excuses, I'm just saying that those experiences contribute to the state of her voice. Like smoking can lead to cancer, what is there to dispute about that? Why would you say that her voice has gotten worse, she just sucks?

Re: Mariah Carey

Mariah's been having vocal problems since the late 1990s (while she was still in her 20s.) It was around the time of BUTTERFLY when things started deteriorating. Listen to her recording of "I Still Believe" from 1998, then listen to "Vision of Love" from 1990...the difference is night and day. Don't make excuses for her. It's not age that's hindering her voice. She obviously let herself go. And rumor has it she's a falldown drunk, which probably makes it worse. Today she's only a barely above average singer. She hasn't been an exceptional vocalist since about 1992. The last time I was astonished by her singing was during her MTV Unplugged. Used to be a time when few could compare to her. Now there's a host of singers who can easily sing her off the stage.

I don't see anyone making excuses for her, why would someone need to make excuses for another persons vocals first of all. Don't believe rumors, if she was an alcoholic don't you think either it would have came out within the last 10 years or TMZ would have gotten us a video of her?

She says she has no vocal training, which is honestly the biggest question I have of her if she loves singing so much. Why has she not been trained, her mother is even a oprah singer???????

You just put a stamp on a previous reply I made..Also, Look at Beyonce..She's been singing since she was a teen..Her voice began maturing when she reached her 20's...Her Voice will be even stronger once she hit her 30's & 40's...Beyonce's Vocal Powers will be something to behold if she takes care of her voice..A singer reaches their "Prime" later in Life, not when they're young and just starting out...

There's not a Recording Artist in the Business that will say they were at their Prime vocally when they were 20-something.....MiMi was at her vocal-Best in her 20's and because of the vocal-chord damage she may not ever know what her voice could have been capable of when she reaches her 40 & 50yrs on this earth...

Miracles do happen..

Is this not an excuse? This is the same thing as me saying that her voice has deteriorated because she used to smoke and has been overworked. I don't know how this is any different, or how I am even making an excuse in the first place. I realized that I have heard some of the stupidest arguments on this board specifically regarding people dissing mariah for pointless reasons. Don't say you aren't dissing because if you weren't you would just have just said that her voice sucks or has gotten worse, period. There's no point in comparing singing ability/style in the first place. There's no science, it's just personal preference.

Re: Mariah Carey

Mariah's one of the best selling solo artists because she's got 18 #1's on Hot 100 and a quite few #1's on Billboard 200, all the other radio and billboard charts don't mean nothing.

That's not true. Beyonce has been a strong singer, for Destiny's Child. Being able to outsing Kelly and Michelle really says nothing. However, Beyonce has never an extremely strong singer...and she never will be. Her voice is not going to become ultra powerful as she ages. While her voice has matured, that maturity has nothing to do with what singing she's done or the conditioning of her voice.

Yes, they would. The may have matured in other ways, such as application and stylings, but their voices would be in the best condition in the 20s and 30s.

All the other radio and Billboard Charts do mean something..Most of Mariah's Albums and singles reached #1 on the Pop charts, Adult Contemporary charts, & The R&B Charts....Pop, Adult Contemporary & R&B radio stations pushed those singles right to the top...BET, MTV & VH1 did their thing as well....I always thought it was strange that her Singles were such Big Pop hits but GRAMMY voters shut her out of the Pop category and awarded her in the R&B category...

With all those years of HITS she should have a wall of full of GRAMMYS..But like many other succesful Artists she's simply not a GRAMMY favorite...

Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!

there's a low budget video made for IWKWLI and it's terrible, she looks gorgeous but the video concept is fake and cheap

Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!

I have only read a few pages but I have to say

Why are more people not all hot and bothered over "More than just friends"

That beat is hot and her vocals are smooth but edgy at the same time

Such a catchy track. My fav on the album

Then obsessed, then inseparable, then hateu

Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!

The IWTKWLI video is her worst music video ever. The only other videos that can come close in it's crappiness are There's Got to Be a Way, Bye Bye, and I Stay in Love. Maybe its just too much greenscreen? Whatever it is, it reflects how much they're putting into promoting it. They might as well have used the Italian X factor performance, it looked much better.
