Re: Mariah earning her 18th Number One this week!!

I thought the no1 was leona lewis Bleeding Love this week.

No, actually “Bleeding Love” was #1 last week.

Another thing, you can’t really compare Mariah to legends like Elvis and The Beatles because it’s a lot easier in the 21st century to have your song at #1 because of quick downloading of singles that are only just 99 cents apiece. It was a different era back then when The Beatles and Elvis were at the peak of their careers. Way back then fans had to drive all the way to music stores to purchase singles that weren’t cheap.

Let me tell you something, if Elvis and The Beatles had their success in this era instead of way back in the 1960’s, I think they’d have twice or three times as many #1 songs than what they had in the past.

Here’s an article from Yahoo News! called: “Mariah Carey Surpasses Elvis- But The Context Is Missing” that talks about it:

Re: Your favorite Mariah songs from E=MC2

I can't wait to hear Bye Bye. I hear that her vocals are so on point.

Re: Your favorite Mariah songs from E=MC2

Im That Chick seems like a highlight for me

Re: Mariah earning her 18th Number One this week!!

I think you are wrong. Back then there was so little competition. If you are popular and stay popular then you are golden. I think people like Mariah and Madonna have it harder. In the 80's and 90's everyone was a singer or had a record deal. Just because you can easily download a song now doesn't make it any easier for a singer to get a number one song. You still have to deal with all the other dowloaded songs. Just because the vehicle of purchase has changed doesn't mean it is any easier. In my eyes Elvis and The Beatles had it the easiest. Honestly, you think the Beatles struggled for so long to get 20 hits. Wrong, they were only together for 10 years. Mariah has been singing professionally now for almost 20 years. She has worked twice as hard as the Beatles.

Well, that’s your opinion as I am entitled to mine, you know. Elvis and The Beatles did have a lot of competition as artists do today- there were contenders like The Supremes, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Pat Boone, Andy Williams, the list goes on and on. And here’s something else, I agree with what InternetEnthusiast said, that it sure helped the big diva to come close to Elvis’s record of #1 singles by acting like a total princess the first six years of her career, acting being the operative word. I don't think that career of hers would've taken off at all if she had stayed true to herself from the beginning.

>>> Wrong, they were only together for 10 years. Mariah has been singing professionally now for almost 20 years. She has worked twice as hard as the Beatles.

No, she's worked twice as LONG as the Beatles. In seven years, the Beatles put out ten albums (as well as twenty or so other tracks that were released as singles or EPs), made three or four movies (only one of which was a bomb), wrote the huge majority of their songs themselves, worked with their producer George Martin to push the boundaries of popular music (a sitar? on a pop song?), and in general, left a legacy that has yet to be rivaled.

I don't want to dis Mariah. But her achievements rather pale next to theirs. She's co-written a couple of decent tunes. She's been astute enough to producer-hop, always finding ones that'll make her current work sound au courant (which will help it up the charts). And her sales history is indeed daunting. But I don't know. Even now, forty years down the road, people throw on Sgt Pepper's or Abbey Road or Rubber Soul, and are still blown away by it all. I just can't imagine people doing that in 2038 with Rainbow or Mimi or even the self-titled one. I picture her being more like Connie Francis. She had plenty of hits back in the 50s and 60s - "Where the Boys Are", "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" - and plenty of people still enjoy them today, myself included. But I don't see her in the same light as the Beatles.

As usual, it'll be up to history to pass final judgment. I'm not denying that Mariah's released some classic material, but I think in the end, it'll be the Beatles catalog that remains the most revered. :)

Congrats to Mariah.

You can't exactly compare her to Elvis though. He was making hit records before the Billboard Hot 100 even came into existence.

Re: Any Mariah Carey fans out there????

ok my first album of Mariah i purchased is The Emancipation of Mimi

what is her most powerful ballad

From TEOM? Or any CD?

From TEOM: Fly Like A Bird or We Belong Together

Vision of Love is probably one of her best ballads.

Re: Any Mariah Carey fans out there????

I like "adult contemporary" Mariah more than the one we have now. Whenever You Call is her masterpiece, fuck Hero.

It's a shame that some nice west coast rap inspired songs like Irresistible were unnoticed due to Charmbracelet being ignored.

Re: Your favorite Mariah songs from E=MC2

Too bad, it sucks how the songs were leaked. I listened to some of them on youtube. My opinions about the songs are pretty much the same. I like "for the record" more, as well as "last kiss", "love story", and "i stay in love".

I think the singles could be:
Bye Bye
Migrate
Im That Chick or I'll Be Lovin U Long Time
Love Story or Last Kiss
For The Record

I think that would be a good order. But whatever she does, it will be a decent album. Cant wait to get it! What do you guys think???

Re: Your favorite Mariah songs from E=MC2

I'm actually gonna hold off listening to the leak because I think I'm buying the album this time.

Re: Your favorite Mariah songs from E=MC2

While I haven't heard many songs from the new album, Touch my body has proven to be a #1 hit. My favorite mariah songs are heartbreaker w/ jay z and there can be miracles, the duet with whitney houston from the prince of egypt.

Re: Your favorite Mariah songs from E=MC2

after listening to the full version of the songs, my favorites are:

i stay in love
migrate
i'm that chick

lyrically, i like the first verse of most of the songs, especially "bye bye," but the rest of the lyrics aren't that great.

Re: Your favorite Mariah songs from E=MC2

Lovin' You Long Time, Cruise Control, and I wish you Well are where its at. I Wish You Well gave me chills the first time I heard it. I feel bad for listening to the songs already but I am def. buying the album!

Re: Your favorite Mariah songs from E=MC2

Re: Any Mariah Carey fans out there????

They are planning a Mariah Carey week on American Idol. It's not known if the theme will just be her songs are if she's just the guest coach but I'm sooo happy!

Anyway, on Idol Gives Back, she'll be singing 'Fly Like a Bird'.
