Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

I don't think the production on E=MC2 was overdone to compensate for her voice. I think it's her live singing that is suffering nowadays. However, it's completely different when she's recording for an album. All she needs is one decent take of a song, & she has her song.

Songs like I Stay In Love & I Wish You Well are difficult to sing, but not after 30 takes! She can still hit the notes when she's prepared, but it's difficult for her, & anybody else, to hit the notes consistenly during a live performance.

Yada, yada, yada...so, basically, what you're saying is that you agree that there has been a decline in her voice. Her voice doesn't the endurance nor stamina required for live performances.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

^^ I don't think anyone has disagreed that there's been a decline in her ability to sing live. But I disagree that there was overproduction to compensate for her 'lack of voice.' The production was rather scaled back compared to The Emancipation.

I'm not saying you disagree but danniflava is disagreeing...well, not really because what he explained shows he does agree, even though he's not quite aware of that fact...I think.

The Emancipation of Mimi, most of the tracks, had too much going on indeed. One of the 2 or 3 tracks I consider to be worthy of listening to, Circles, has a rather simplistic approach to the arrangements wich allowed her voice to shine. Sometimes simple tracks are much harder to sing than overproduced tracks.

IMO, Mariah shows better what she can do, in terms of emotional expression and interpretation, in simpler tracks.

I completely agree. "Joy Ride" and "Mine Again" were two of my favorite tracks from that album. Also "To The Floor."

I don't like Joy Ride. The only good thing are the vocals towards the end. "Mine Again" would've been a pretty good track had she not screamed so much...too much belting, the emotional tone and meaning of the song didn't need that much belting...the belting ruined it. It was just one of those tracks to show that she still had the golden pipes.

"Stay the Night" was a solid track. I really like the arrangement...was...different. And it's not an easy song to sing...not because of the belting but just because of it's structure and melody.
"I Wish You Knew" was only NICE, mostly 'cause of the old school soulful sound of the track...it doesn't have any originality or creativity but it was nice to hear an old school sounding track.
"Fly Like a Bird" was...ok. Great vocals and the arrangement was nicely done.

The rest of the album...VOMIT!
"Your Girl" is like the worst and most irritating song! ugh!

I didn't like Stay The Night because when she sang the chorus you could hear the auto-tune in full force. "NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT" sounded so fake that it irked me, and I could never listen to the song. And I hated the fact that Kanye used the same sample for John Legend at the same time.
"I Wish You Knew" was funny because I remember in the Tampa concert stop, she made fun of it saying "I only did this song so I could do the talking part." I love her personality in her concerts. Very humorous.
"Joy Ride" just reminded me so much of the Butterfly album, but I don't really know why. It just does. And she sang it acapella at our concert because a fan had a sign and asked if she would sing it because it was her and her husbands wedding song. I learned to appreciate Fly Like A Bird more because when she sang it live it just...yeah. The Grammy performance I was just taken back by it's power.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

^^^ RESPONSE TO YOUR ABOVE POSTS:

I COMPLETELY agree that Mariah's voice is in decline, & has been in decline for the most of this past decade.

What I was trying to say in my earlier post was that I don't think E=MC2 was overproduced to compensate for her lack of vocal ability. I think it was produced the same way any album was.... Because her voice sounds great on E=MC2 -- the reason for that is because you only need one good take of a song but you have many attempts at making it sound good. Obviously, Mariah isn't gonna make her songs sound shit on her album, but she doesn't really get that chance during a live performance [because you only have one shot at sounding good, & 80% of the time, she hasn't been sounding good live].

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

It's almost like, dare I say it, Britney Spears. On her earlier albums, she sounded perfectly fine, but during her select live performances, she was complete shit.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

^^ Oooooh no, buddy. Britney never actually had any talent to begin with! BAAAAD comparison. And I LIKE Britney.

Not true. She had a great voice as a child. On her first album, she wasn't belting anything, but she didn't sound nearly as bad as she does now.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

Opinions of "great voices" obviously differ. When you can't sing your own slow songs LIVE, eh, yeah. Next.

Well, as somebody who has a career in the singing industry, Britney has a terrible voice. However, compared to the average American person, her voice is actually okay.

I don't disagree with that at all. But to compare Mariah to her, it's like comparing grape jelly to orange juice.

They changed her voice on purpose to sound the way it sounded on the first album. Her voice, naturally, wasn't like that...she had a pretty strong powerful voice as a kid. I saw clips of her belting E5's and F#5's...EFFORTLESSLY! I was very surprised.

I'd like to know what type of exercises they made her do in order to change the sound of her voice...

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

^^ It's very evident when she used to sing "I'm Not A Girl" live, and her voice would crack like a boy hitting puberty.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

I think, in Britney's case, she had/has a good voice.... But now, it's a habit of hers to sing the way she does: like a valley girl. Poor vocal technique. Obviously she's not gonna be able to hit any difficult notes!

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

OK, well I looked them both up.
I have heard of Sade but I didn't recognize it because it's not spelled like it's pronounced. Threw me off LOL!! But Billie Holiday...clueless. Thanks YouTube. lol

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

That's ironic considering Billie Holiday was one of Mariah's favorite vocalists growing up...one of her influences.

Re: Not so long ago Mariah could blow

Wow, really? Irony at it's best! I never really paid attention to her influences. I know Stevie Wonder, Patti Labelle & Aretha Franklin were huge influences, but not that Billie person.

P.S. - Not to make you feel uncomfortable...or maybe I am...but everytime you post, I find myself staring at that pic in your signature for a minute. or two.
