Re: New Whitney Album/Song/Performance/Nominations [Mega-Merged Thread]

Now what could she possibly have been doing during that break.....?.....oh no, of course she is clean now isn't she. ;)

Uh, she was still on stage....walked towards the back where her water is placed and she drank some before she went for the big belts/big notes....just like she ALWAYS does when performing the song. Go watch all the other videos of all her recent performances of "I Will Always Love You". Whitney is very dramatic. She always stops mid-way through the song and goes off to drink some water, with the audience still watching her and cheering her on, then she comes back to the mic and goes for it. It's all apart of her stage act and building up the excitement. Plus re-moistening her throat before she goes for the big belts and the high notes at the end (which she always nails after drinking some water!)

Re: Poor Whitney ...

You obviously haven't been keeping up with the epic Whitney Houston thread in the Entertainment section. I assume SexyKev will come by shortly to explain how, despite being sick with...I dunno, malaria or some such, she gamely came out and gave her all, because she's a diva, damnit. And she was choking up not because of illness, and certainly not due to age and poor living, but because the adoration of the crowd continually choked her up. Just going to show how despite the worship from her millions of devoted fans, she's still very humble-hearted. You go girl!

...or something like that.

Completely agree.

The Aussies really are quite disrespectful. No offense to any Aussies on here, but damn. Getting up and leaving...they seem to be NOTORIOUS for that, no matter WHO you are. There's NO WAY I would leave after paying that much money. They did the same to Britney Spears. It's crazy.

Agreed...|

I too would not leave after I paid that much money to see anyone. I really wish people would understand that no singer is up all the time especially singers like Whitney,Aretha or Chaka they use a lot more of their voice then almost any singer! Hell Patti Labelle is not singing like she use to and her fans go on and on saying that she sounds the same as she did in the 90's when she does not.

At this point in the game what do any of them have to prove? They already did it all in their prime.

Oh come off it! Whitney is 20 years younger than Aretha and Patti, 10 years younger than Chaka, and i bet none of them have ever put in such an abysmal live performance as these videos show. This is not about a performer not sounding as good as she did 20 years ago, Houston should not be fleecing fans for $100s when she is clearly not fit enough physically or vocally to give a half way decent performance.

I am a Whitney fan. Saw her live in 1987 and treasure it as one of the greatest live performances I've witnessed. But I could not sit through more than a few minutes of that performance.

Hopefully remaining dates will be postponed or cancelled until she is capable of delivering.

A review from the Sydney Morning Herald, of the Sydney show last night (2/24/10)......

Diva hits highs - then takes a breather

Review by George Palathingal
February 25, 2010

IF Whitney Houston wanted to dance with somebody who loves her, she came to the right place.

Despite the terrible reviews following Houston's Brisbane show - we saw the clips and there was no pretending they weren't anything but excruciating - there may have been more goodwill in the room than even she imagined.

Most people here were supporters hoping to see (at least) glimpses of their diva in full flight, rather than voyeurs itching to watch the indignity of her crumbling before their eyes.

Perhaps surprisingly, it was not the car crash one expected. But the first half was not completely great, either.

It started explosively, more because of a crisp and classy band than Houston herself, but she gamely aimed at, and hit, more high notes than expected. Her voice is coarser than it once was but she can still belt a tune.

Reports from Brisbane said she was breathless after two songs; here it took four before the panting - and then the stalling - began. Let's just say there was a lot of banter and the backing singers earned their money.

She continued, strutting glamorously to and fro across the stage, but starting a set strongly with new songs that few care about and perhaps leaving little in the tank for the songs they do, may not be such a good idea.

At the time of filing this review, an hour into the show, the only walk-outs were to the bar while a backing singer let Houston have a breather. You can bet everyone was praying she had saved something special for her return.

A whole lot of love for Whitney Houston

POP diva Whitney Houston redeemed herself at her Sydney concert overnight.

It was as if her audience at Acer Arena really wanted her to succeed in the wake of bad reviews from her Brisbane show earlier this week.

During the first half she rocked the audience, who were on their feet even before the first song.

The second half was not so successful.

She returned in unflattering black sparkling pants and woolly vest and during her acoustic and gospel songs she couldn't reach some of the higher notes.

Some in the audience described the concert as "bizarre and weird'', with Houston stopping and starting in the middle of songs.

But the show stopper was I will Always Love You.

There was big break in the middle of the song as she went to the back of the stage, returning to lift the roof.

Despite her patchy performance, the audience warmed to her.

The tour is scheduled to continue to the Hunter Valley, Melbourne and Adelaide.

lol @ the Australian media. They cannot compliment without giving a negative... "she redeemed herself", yet some say it was "was bizarre & weird". Talk about inconsistency. But at least she "redeemed" herself....

Im so glad the Sydney Australia show was a success! Go head whitney for redeeming yourself. Now just keep it up and bring "it" for the rest of your shows!!

Re: New Whitney Album/Song/Performance/Nominations [Mega-Merged Thread]

Here is a review from a mariah fan who attended the Sydney show. It was posted on another board........

"Well I'm back from the concert!

All I have to say is Whitney Houston truly is one of the greatest voices to have ever lived. The fact that her stamina isn't there and that the transitioning between chest/head voice to falsetto is difficult for her is very true, but overall the show was great.

Whitney interacted with the crowd several times, she made jokes. The crowd laughed with Whitney, Whitney laughed with the crowd. She stood back and let one of her dancers propose to his gf on stage and after she said yes the crowd was a little silent so she walked toward the end of the stage motioning up to applaud lol.

She only had one wardrobe change where her brother sang one song, the backup dancers sang Queen Of The Night and then there was a montage of pictures from her 25yr career to One Moment In Time. She went to her little table and drank water like 3 times and used the sweat rag about the same.

Like I said earlier the transitioning to falsetto proved difficult and a lot of her softer high notes didn't quite work but her chest/head voice was on point! She totally blew it out of the ball park.

The first halves of For The Lovers and Nothin' But Love were lipped I believe but the endings were totally live and the crowd was going absolutely wild during them. The atmosphere was electric and the reaction when the and started playing and when Whitney came was sooooo amazing!

I Look To You was absolutely briliant! The emotion and energy that came from Whitney was great!

Some of the notes she hit in I Look To You, My Love Is Your Love, If I Told You That, Saving All My Love For You, All At Once, I Love The Lord, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, I Will Always Love You were amazing!

She didn't sing the chorus' too much and ad-libbed but I can't get over the energy and atmosphere. The crowd was really rewarding and enthusiastic.

When it came to the song I want to hear... I Will Always Love You... she started it and the crowd/I went nuts! She cut out the second verse but she went to sing it and quickly corrected herself and went to the bridge hehe. She took a two minute break or so before the climax to dry her face and drink some water which just made the audience cheer and chant and stomp their feet and she walked back to the microphone... the crowd was sitting, waiting... she signaled the band ... the the music began and Whitney goes "And IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII WILL ALLLLLLLWAYYYYYYS.... LOVE YOUUUUUUUUUU IIIIIIIIIIIIII.... IIIIII WILL AAAAAAAAALWAYYYYYYYYYYS LOOOOOVE YOUUUUUU" and the crowd erupted and jumped to their feet and cheered and clapped and generally went beserk. It was absolutely electric - one of my greatest ever experiences in my entire life. I witnessed Whitney Houston sing one of my favourite songs ever and she delivered.

I've never been so proud to be a Whitney Houston fan in my life... in my ENTIRE LIFE! She truly is an icon. Her voice may not be as technically perfect as it was 10 years ago, or 20 years ago but man she can really still sing! I was so worried after the Brisbane reviews but they were completely wrong. She wasn't exhausted and breathless, or panting, after two songs. She coughed a few times but that's expected when your throat is dry. Nothing too much.

Even my mum and her friends really enjoyed it. I heard other people on my way out say how much they loved the show! I was dancing for most of the show... When she did I Wanna Dance With Somebody and How Will I know everyone was up singing and dancing and the joy on Whitney's face truly was something special. The crowd sang loudly during I Will Always Love You, My Love Is Your Love, and Greatest Love Of All.

I'm sorry for gushing... but I can't believe I was only metres away from Ms Whitney Houston for two hours. I just can't get over how great the night was. My ears are ringing it was so loud, but truly special.

She left after I Will Always Love You and the crowd didn't stop cheering and hollering and stomping their feet... the band started up about 10 minutes later and Whitney poped her head through the curtain at the back of the stage and smiled and came back out on stage as Million Dollar Bill (Freemasons Remix) started playing. She danced about and sang and it was just an awesome way to close the show!

I can't wait to hear Tim's review and Maria's from the Hunter Valley.

Here is the set list:

For The Lovers
Nothin' But Love
I Look To You
My Love Is Your Love
It's Not Right, But It's Okay
If I Told You That
Gary Houston sings some song.
Queen Of The Night (back up singers)
One Moment In Time (playback with picture montage from her career).
Saving All My Love For You (Acoustic)
Greatest Love Of All/All At Once (Medley)
I Learnt From The Best
I Love The Lord
I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)
How Will I Know
I Will Always Love You
Million Dollar Bill

Re: New Whitney Album/Song/Performance/Nominations [Mega-Merged Thread]

And another review from another mariah fan who attended...........

"OHHHHHHHH MYYYYYYYYYY GODDDDDDDDDD (*said in a Janice [from Friends] tone*)!!!

What an amazing experience! I've been home for 2 hours now, and yet I am still on such a high! I can't explain how happy I am right now.. As I have said on Facebook & Twitter, tonight was truly a DREAM COME TRUE! To love and admire someone from the age of 3, I had so many ideas all my life of what this night would end up being for me - and I have to say, the show fulfilled the expectations and so much more!

There is not much else to add from what Matt has said. He ran through pretty much the entire show with great detail!!

I have to say, fundamentally: BRAVO TO THE SYDNEY AUDIENCE!! I've been to a zillion concerts in my time, and I have NEVER experienced such a lively, loud and interactive audience! They were into it from the get-go! Even Whitney was genuinely surprised by the love in the room (especially after the Brisbane debarkle). Considering the negative media attention, I'm so proud that we all came out in true support for her! Everyone was there in great spirits and were all rooting for her to succeed. It was beautiful!

From the moment Whitney opened the show with "For The Lovers", we all knew we were in for an incredible night! She was fierce! Her stage presence is incredible! Many people say, and it's so true, no female can command a stage like Whitney! Her energy was electric, and the crowd responded accordingly! She continued with "Nothin' But Love" and kept up the momentum! As Matt and I said, the audience were with her 100%! Everyone was up singing and dancing - which is a great sign considering they were both album tracks.

Before she went into "I Look To You", she sang a snippet of "Like I Never Left", which was nice.. Before she went into "I Look To You", she held this incredibly long and clear note! The crowd erupted! She definitely gave the Australian media the finger with that one, hahaha!

Like Matty said, yes, her vocals were thin and weak at times - but when she was good, she was AMAZING! There were so many moments where I sat there and thought "OH MY GOD! THAT'S THE VOICE!"

'My Love Is Your Love', 'It's Not Right But It's Okay" and "If I Told You That" kept the party going. She was adding powerful adlibs and getting the audience involved with additional segments in the music (I loved how she starting singing IITYT instead of INRBIO, then stopped the music and switched it around).

She took a break and left her brother to sing "For The Love Of You" (from her 'Whitney' album), and the backups sang "Queen Of The Night" really well! The video montage with "One Moment In Time" was really nice - as it reminded us of her incredible career and the icon she truly is! The crowd would cheer during momental moments (like when it showed 'The Bodyguard' and the 'I Will Always Love You' video).. A pleasant surprise was where the montage showed a quick 1-2 second clip of her holding Mariah's hand in the WYB video! The crowd starting cheering again, which was really pleasant !

The acoustic medley (with 'Saving All My Love For You', 'Greatest Love Of All' and 'All At Once') was probably where it was most noticeable that her voice has changed. However, the crowd helped her along and sang loudly.

She began rambling a little bit before and after her Gospel segment, but Bobbi-Kristina (her daughter), from right in front of the stage, told her to move along, which quickly brought the show back on track.

She performed her disco classics, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and "How Will I Know" - which had the ENTIRE audience on their feet. As Matt said, she mainly adlibbed during the choruses, but still had amazing energy throughout it.

Then.. THE SHOW STOPPER!! The moment everyone waited for.. "I Will Always Love You".. WHAT AN HONOUR IT WAS TO SEE HER SING THAT LIVE! No YouTube clip or audio clip could truly represent how much of a magical moment that was! She started off normally (with a few talk-singing moments), quite shaky at times.. Then before the big climax of the song - she took a 2 minute break to drink her water and compose herself for the big moment.. The audience were with her the whole time, waiting anxiously and nervously for it to happen (and cheering her on). We all knew that she was struggling throughout the slower songs, so we all wanted her to kill it!... She came back to the microphone, signalled the band, and belted "And IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU".. As Matty said, the crowd ERUPTED like I have NEVER seen before.. It was such an incredibly triumphant moment! SHE DID IT!! That was "THE VOICE".. It felt like 1992!! Such an emotional moment! I will never forget the power of that experience.. Being there for that was a true privilege! I honestly can't express how amazing that moment was!! Sorry to blab, but it was just WOW!!!!

The encore was 'Million Dollar Bill' and she sounded great! Her voice now suited her newer songs (obviously)!

Little side notes: As Matty had alluded to, there has been MUCH media over-exaggeration regarding the sweat towel/drink breaks. It wasn't THAT bad. What people couldn't see, which we could, was that she was taking her Asthma puffer and also blowing her nose - so I think she wasn't feeling well (hence the occasional cough). Also, throughout the show, she had also sung snippets of MJ's "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Amazing Grace" and "I'm Every Woman (Outro)". Also, she had cut a few songs from the setlist: 'I Didn't Know My Own Strength', 'Step By Step', 'Exhale (Shoop Shoop)' and 'Missing You (MJ Trubute)'.

OMG so sorry for rambling.. I'm just a little excited! I'll wrape it up.. Overall, AMAZING SHOW! A true icon! Great audience response!

It'll be interesting to see how this is represented in the news tomorrow, but from what Matty and I saw, it was well received. I'm sure there was a minority who hated it, however, overhearing people as we were walking out - there was 'nothin' but love' for her! (obviously she exceeded many people's lower expectations after the Brisbane show, haha)..

Finally.. Just on a MDU level.. I could see Matty for most of the night quite clearly (after I spotted him during Anthony Callea).. He was soooo happy! It was really great to see!! I felt like I was sharing an awesome moment with ya, but yet you didn't know! hahaha! We SMS'd a few times throughout it, however the friggin security guard wouldn't let me pass the gate to say hello! Ahh well, it's just awesome that we both had fun and had GREAT seats

Sorry for the rambling guys!! So much more I wanna say, but I should go to bed.. haha!

P.S. After seeing this show, I am so much more confident that Mariah would SMASH IT on an Australian tour!!"

I agree dude!! Whitney has nothing left to prove. She'll forever be remembered and referred to as being one of the greatest singers and voices of ALL time. Shes THE VOICE. That's her legacy. Shes held every record in the music industry and she has nothing left to prove. All she should be focused on doing now is staying clean, sober and healthy, which she appears 2 b doing. She looks awesome and her body is in the best shape ive ever seen it. and she seems to b in a good place spiritually. Her voice will continue to heal aslong as she stays on tha right path.

New pics from the Sydney concert last night (2/24/10)......

Woooo-Hooooo at them legs!! Her dresses keep getting shorter and shorter. Lol I love it! Hawt mama!!

Re: Poor Whitney ...

Oh my god.

I was there last night, and I can contest that she was...well awful. It was a total cringefest.

It's like, before she chose to go on tour, did no one say to her "Whitney, I don't think it's a good idea" or had she not heard herself sing?

But kudos to her for finishing, although she spent about half her time talking to the audience, then got on a high horse about religion. But also bad because she butchered every beloved song.

Re: Whitney Houston or George Michael

Better see Whitney now. On the cover of the tabloids this week, it says she's dying again.

Re: Whitney Houston or George Michael

Most of the media reports have been that she is 'disappointing' at best - and 'disastrously bad' at worst.

One of the morning news show people here described it as "if you were a dedicated Whitney fan, you would maybe enjoy it - but if not you probably wouldn't be impressed". He mentioned that she did manage to make the big note on "I will always love you" - but (& they showed a youtube of a prior concert where she did the same thing) only because she stopped the song immediately before that note, went to the rear of the stage & with her back to the audience had a towel down, a drink & a gargle - then came back 30 seconds or so later to continue the song.

If that's the only way she can hit the big notes now it doesn't exactly make for 'continuity' of the song, does it? I'm sure some people would be sympathetic - but, if she's charging the prices she is, I (like most other Aussies I'm sure) would just regard it as rather pathetic.

Kudos to her for trying to get her life back on track - but not for charging premium prices for third rate performances.

Re: Whitney Houston or George Michael

^ Yep! If she can't do the gig properly, she shouldn't be charging 200 bucks a seat!

Diva Disaster Down Under

Whitney Houston struggles through first night of Australia tour

Pop diva Whitney Houston has struggled through the opening night of her first Australian tour since 1988, raising questions about the remainder of the concert series.

The 46-year-old actress and singer got through two songs at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Monday night before appearing breathless and exhausted, taking a break and then carrying a towel with her for the next few songs.

After half a dozen songs, during some of which she coughed, she left the stage to take a break, bringing on her brother, Gary Houston, to sing.

The band and backing singers then performed an energetic version of Queen of the Night, from The Bodyguard soundtrack.

When she returned to the stage in a white pants suit, she settled down into a chair for a gravelly voiced acoustic version of some of her hits from the 1980s and 90s.

But the multi-award winning singer appeared disoriented and failed to properly name some of her backing band as she introduced them to the audience.

She paid tribute to a couple in the front of the audience who told her they had been married 39 years, and went to the side of the stage, where she serenaded her teenage daughter Bobbi.

Houston had the audience on its feet with an impromptu gospel-infused tribute to the late Michael Jackson, two of whose cancelled This is It tour dancers are in her entourage, singing The Way You Make Me Feel and Wanna Be Starting Something.

But the final act, a string of groove-laden dance numbers and ballads, faltered at the finale when she croaked her way through I Will Always Love You, pausing to get a drink and towel off just as she was about to hit the song's epic high note, which she turned into a soft coo.

Houston has sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos, with her career soaring through the 1990s, but took a sharp dive as the shadow of an abusive relationship and drug addiction enveloped her life

The thread is a little old, but I would of said the George Micheal concert and head for the bathrooms.

What are you talking about? This thread is current. Houston is struggling her way thru Australia right and Michael is performing soon. Hot Topic if there ever was one.
