Re: New Whitney Album/Song/Performance/Nominations [Mega-Merged Thread]

...and that was just a couple weeks ago, on Feb 7th. Them notes. The clarity. Her tone. It's all on point when she is having a good vocal day. She just has to get to a point where she is consistent and can hold on to this voice and have more control over it again. Her voice comes and goes. Haven't we learned anything from when she performed on Good Morning America to now? Some days the voice shows up, some days it doesn't.

Questions raised as Whitney struggles through Brisbane concert

Pop diva Whitney Houston has struggled through the opening night of her first Australian tour since 1988, raising questions about the remainder of the concert series.

The 46-year-old actress and singer got through two songs at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre last night before appearing breathless and exhausted, taking a break and then carrying a towel with her for the next few songs.

After half a dozen songs, during some of which she coughed, she left the stage to take a break, bringing on her brother, Gary Houston, to sing.

The band and backing singers then performed an energetic version of Queen of the Night, from The Bodyguard soundtrack.

When she returned to the stage in a white pants suit, she settled down into a chair for a gravelly voiced acoustic version of some of her hits from the 1980s and 90s.

But the multi-award winning singer appeared disoriented and failed to properly name some of her backing band as she introduced them to the audience.

She paid tribute to a couple in the front of the audience who told her they had been married 39 years, and went to the side of the stage, where she serenaded her teenage daughter Bobbi.

Houston had the audience on its feet with an impromptu gospel-infused tribute to the late Michael Jackson, two of whose cancelled This is It tour dancers are in her entourage, singing The Way You Make Me Feel and Wanna Be Starting Something.

But the final act, a string of groove-laden dance numbers and ballads, faltered at the finale when she croaked her way through I Will Always Love You, pausing to get a drink and towel off just as she was about to hit the song's epic high note, which she turned into a soft coo.

Houston has sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos, with her career soaring through the 1990s, but took a sharp dive as the shadow of an abusive relationship and drug addiction enveloped her life.

Re: Whitney Houston or George Michael

You know there's a problem when her promoter has to go on national TV and make excuses!

No problem here: Houston

Whitney Houston's management team has rejected rumours the 46-year-old was ill after a reportedly shambolic performance in Brisbane last night.

The pop diva's camp said they were "happy'' with the opening performance of her Australian tour.

Fans and music journalists this morning blasted the gig, held at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

One reviewer described the award-wining singer's effort as ''breathless and exhausted'' in a repeat of criticism that dogged her recent tour to South Korea.

However, representatives of Houston this morning told brisbanetimes.com.au the singer would not have been allowed on stage ''if it was going to harm her health''.

In a written statement, Andrew McManus questioned why Australians couldn't support someone "who has seen difficult times".

"[She] is now up on stage, warts and all, presenting herself like an open book for the world to see - and they want to ridicule Whitney," he said.

"I am personally amazed at the few who are trying to derail the project and say if they expected to hear Whitney of 20 years ago, go buy a CD.

"If they wanted to see a true professional artist give 100 per cent ... well come along and enjoy the ride of an amazing talent, on stage, letting her heart and soul out for us all to enjoy.''

Fans who attended last night's Brisbane show forked out $125 for the cheapest seats.

However, judging by much of the online reaction, it seems many went home disappointed.

''We just got back from Whitney Houston concert in Brizzy and I feel so sorry for her. She sounded croaky,'' fan Rick Crystal said on Facebook.

''#whitneyhouston should have toured 15 years ago. Voice not what it used to be,'' adavidholloway said on Twitter after the concert.

An official Australian Associated Press concert review said Houston ''appeared disoriented and failed to properly name some of her backing band as she introduced them to the audience'.'

Houston will have two days' rest before her next performance in Sydney at the Acer Arena on February 24.

Critics Slam Whitney Houston For Sloppy Brisbane Concert

Whitney Houston has made headlines this morning for all the wrong reasons, after kicking off the Australian leg of her tour in Brisbane last night.

46-year-old Houston apparently struggled through her heavily vocal performance, appearing out of breath after only the first two songs and pausing to take breaks frequently with her back to the crowd.

Whitney brought her brother out to sing while she rested and left her backing band to perform her hit 'Queen Of The Night'.

The diva has been canned by reviewers for the less than great performance, particularly after she failed to hit the high notes in her trademark single 'I Will Always Love You.'

According to morning news reports, some fans even walked out from disappointment.
Whitney still has shows scheduled for Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

NEW YORK (AP) - Though video postings of her recent performances in Australia have been less than flattering, Whitney Houston says her tour is going great - and she's in great health.
Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, released a statement Thursday, saying: "Whitney is in great health and having a terrific time on her tour and with her fans. She said more than 9,000 people attended Houston's show in Brisbane and more than 12,000 were at Acer Arena in Sydney.
"Her fans were dancing and singing along with her and Whitney appreciates their support," Foster said.
That view contrasts with news reports quoting disgruntled fans who complaining about the star's voice and performance. Video snippets of Houston struggling to hit notes in concerts in Sydney and Brisbane have circulated widely on YouTube and other outlets.
The 46-year-old, who is one of pop's all-time best-selling artists, staged a comeback last year with her first album in seven years, "I Look to You." It debuted at the top of the album charts.
During her hiatus from music, she battled drug addiction and ended a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown. But as she returned last year, she declared herself healthy and free from substance abuse. This is Houston's first tour in years. It started in February in South Korea and will take her to Europe until at least May. Foster said there currently are no plans for a United States tour.

Whitney's publicist was also going to comment on how lovely the emperor's clothes were, but she had to take another call...

Re: Poor Whitney ...

To be honest, the reviews for Sydney were alot better than the ones that came out of the Brisbane concert. Maybe she was just suffering from first night nerves. There is a lot riding on this for her in regards to her comeback.

I still think it's funny she told her tour bus driver in Brisbane to mind his own business and fuck off when he suggested stopping off along the way to let her enjoy some of the Queensland sunshine.
That was kind of funny but it was also really mean. What a bitch thing to say.
