Re: New Whitney Album On Sale Today!

>>>I really like the uptempo songs that I've heard, the ballads I'm not so fond of because her voice just isn't what it was. But the upbeat numbers are very enjoyable.

I'm totally the opposite. I like the ballads because she's making good use of what her voice now IS. No, her voice isn't what it was - she's closing in a quarter-century older than she was when she debuted. And rather than try to push her voice where it doesn't go - and have the producer cover it up with "guest stars" and ProTools - she stuck with numbers that she CAN still sing. Which she sang quite well.

The uptempo numbers were uneven, to put it mildly.

HOUSTON, THERE'S NO PROBLEM

Look to You Looks Like 250-275k, As Second Release Day Matches First, Cyrus Next

September 2, 2009

Whitney Houston's comeback is complete.

Her Arista/RMG album, Look to You, taking advantage of its Monday release date to be eligible for this year's Grammys, will debut at #1, with a robust sales figure of 250-275k.

That's based on two-day sales reports from those among our crack group of retail reporters who haven't yet paved paradise and put up a parking lot. Her second day, Tuesday, which would have been the normal release date, proved every bit as busy as the first.

Miley Cyrus' seven-song Wal-Mart exclusive, The Time of Our Lives, which leaked before street date to the tune of 60k+, debuting at #2 on this week's chart and foreclosing an expected diva duel, will nevertheless remain the runner-up, with a total between 140-150k for the Hollywood Records release.

Atlantic R&B star and former Grammy nominee Trey Songz' Ready is up next at between 100-115k.

Other expected chart debuts include Epic's Chevelle (35-40k), Polo Grounds/J/RMG's Pitbull (30-35k), Silver Arrow's the Black Crowes (30-35k), Reprise's The Used (25-30k) and Verve Forecast's John Fogerty with his Blue Ridge Rangers album (12-15k).

The market was up 2% vs. last week, down 19% vs. same week last year and still down 15% year to date.

In other news, John Slattery's black-faced rendition of "My Old Kentucky Home" as ad agency chief Roger Sterling from last week's episode of Mad Men is not the #1 download on iTunes. But it should be.

Whitney & Oprah:

Can't wait for this! Saw the commercial. This should be good -- and revealing! Oprah is really going there with the questions ("When did the drugs start?", "When did you know your marriage was over?", "Did you ever think you would lose your voice?"). Should be a very raw, revealing and emotional interview.

Whitney Houston Gets Second Day on Oprah

By: Roger Friedman // Tuesday September 1, 2009

Whitney Houston was so good on Tuesday's taping of Oprah that she's doing a second one tomorrow.

This means that Whitney will get not only the Oprah premiere on Sept. 14, but a full second hour on Sept. 15 to finish up.

What this also means is that Houston's "I Look to You" album should skyrocket in sales.

The CD, which was released yesterday, looks like it's tracking toward a 300,000 copy debut. Frankly, it's surprising everyone, even the people at Arista Records. Reports are that "I Look to You" is exceeding expectations and is No. 1 in most foreign markets after making its worldwide debut on Monday.

Houston's success can be attributed to a lot of things, but mostly the idea that she's overcome her difficulties and survived. Everyone loves a survival story, and Whitney is certainly one of the most rooted-for celebrities ever.

On "Oprah," apparently Houston talks frankly with Winfrey about her drug addiction, her life with Bobby Brown, and just about everything else people are curious about. If this proves true, and Whitney really comes clean, the catharsis should re-establish her. The worst thing Houston ever did was her Diane Sawyer interview in 2002 - her infamous "I can afford better drugs than crack" speech. For Houston to open up, be honest, and take responsibility for that whole mess, well, then, she's back.

Also on "Oprah," set-siders (I love that expression) say Houston's gut-wrenching performance of the Diane Warren song "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" should ensure an outpouring of emotion- and a guaranteed hit single.

Tyler Perry's Message About Whitney:

"I want to say a special thanks to all of you for the prayers for my mother. She is doing much better. I just spent the weekend laughing, reminiscing and being grateful to God. She is a strong woman. Speaking of strong women, I don't know if you know this or not, but Whitney Houston and I are friends. Over the last few years, I've gotten to know her pretty well, and with that, I've had the opportunity to witness a miracle up close and personal. I've watched her regain her strength, her fight and her faith. You have no idea how much this woman has been through in her life and, as much as she's shared with me, I'm sure half of it has not been told. What I know for sure is; she is a living miracle. Pretty soon you will hear her tell these stories in her own words and then I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll hear her tell it in the next two weeks as a matter of fact. That being said, I'd like for you to pick up her new album, I LOOK TO YOU. It's available now, and is truly amazing. When you buy it online or in the stores, whisper a prayer for her. She is truly looking to you and to God for all her strength. And do me this favor, if you will, add her to your prayer list. Pray for her as she steps back into the spotlight, as she takes back all that belongs to her. Just because she's Whitney Houston doesn't mean that she doesn't need prayer, we all do. So, thank you for that. I know you will. Now on to a bit of business, September 11th is when I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF hits theaters! I hope you're planning to go! If you need a good, hard laugh, this movie is going to give it to you. Plan to take the whole family just to get a little stress relief. I know some of you may need it, I know I do. I have never watched any of my movies over and over - but I have seen this one ten different times. I laugh and want to cry, but by the end of it I'm grateful every time. Okay, last thing 'cause I know most of you are at work (SMILE). I'm thinking about doing a Talk Show… just once a week... that's it. So I did sort of a test to see if I can do it. It's going to air on September 9th, that's next Wednesday, on TBS at 11:00pm, after HOUSE OF PAYNE and new episodes of MEET THE BROWNS. Pastor Marvin Winans, Gladys Knight, Adam Rodriguez and Taraji P. Henson are all my guests, with a special Mary J. Blige video. So next week check out the show. After you watch it, please go to my message board, if you're still up (LOL), and tell me what you think. Now be honest! Don't have me trying to do a Talk Show and it's terrible, (LOL). Tell me the truth. If I can count on anybody to keep it real with me, you know it's you…(SMILE). I hope you like it. I'll let you go, but hey, are you following me on Twitter or Facebook? If not, just know that next week I'm taking you step-by-step through my week before I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF opens….so follow me! TP"

Billboard is estimating "upwards of 200K", which still will easily put her at #1.

I am happy for her. I was dead wrong. That is amazing to sell that many cds based on hype- no music video, no single, no high profile appearances. Its amazing what prayer and God can do. I bet she is praising God right now. :)

Its been a huge shift in the 2000's when it comes to the legends...Record labels seem to not be putting money into any of their CDs when it come to promotion,no videos or even a good amount of magazine ads to say hey the CD is out go buy it!!!...In the 90's you would see people like Aretha Franklin,Chaka Khan on the charts with Whitney Houston and the others who were at there peak during that time but now you do not!...Name the last time a legend had a real hit?..They are still getting grammys but what about promotion and sales?...If your not Rihanna or Beyonce you really do not get that type of hype push behind the latest project..

Oh well I just make sure I support those that I love to hear!

Re: New Whitney Album On Sale Today!

The CD is actually really great... it deserves to be #1. Whitney's live performances will be ups and downs, that's nothing new. But another poster hit it on the head when he mentioned that she looks happy to be performing again, and that she seems to really care now. I think that's what people are responding to: the fact that she is trying to turn her life around for the better.

I think Tyler Perry's message and Oprah's interview reveals that Whitney has been through more than any of us can imagine. Self-inflicted? Perhaps, but still painful and hard to overcome.

If Whitney's album lands at #1 as it is predicted, she will have had a #1 album in each of the last 3 decades... that is really something to be proud of, not many artists can say that.

According to HitsDailyDouble, the prediction for Whitney Houston's new album has been INCREASED and is now in the 300k range! Get it Whitney. (!)

GOOD LOOK: With a brisk third day to match the activity of the first two, Whitney Houston's Arista comeback, I Look to You, is now looking in the 290-310k range, with the wild card being the Labor Day weekend. Could sales go even higher?

Re: New Whitney Album On Sale Today!

Well I finally got around to watching her performance on GMA and while I won't say that Whitney's performance was atrocious, I'm not going to agree either that it was great. It was so-so, overall vocally Whitney had quite a few up and down moments. It's a fact that her voice has changed drastically and it's nowhere near as strong and powerful as it was in the 80s/90s. During "I Look to You", Whitney was sounding rather hoarse and gravelly whenever she had to hit some of the song's more higher notes. And in some portions of the song, it sounded as if her voice went out altogether. The longer I heard her sing that one, the more I wished someone else other than her was singing it b/c it's an alright song but Whitney doesn't have the chops anymore to really take that song to a special place where it belongs.

But her rendition of "My Love is Your Love" was enjoyable on the ears. I loved her energy and I loved the fact that it seemed as if Whitney truly loved being up there performing again in front of her fans. She looked radiant, she had a certain glow to her that I hadn't seen of her in years. So for that and the nice special appearance of Bobbi Kristina, I'd say her first comeback concert was a success. Whitney has a more positive attitude this time around which allows me to overlook her irregular vocal abilites.

That's what I'll never understand. It was a bad performance. So was Mariah's at the MJ tribute. And yet they both had excuses "I did Oprah the day before," or "it was an emotional moment." Both of them need to get real and realize their voice is what it is and they have to work around their limitations. Anyone who thought Whitney's performance was great, seriously needs to drain their ears, same with Mariah's MJ performance.
They can still sing, but they need to work with it instead of expecting, aiming, and failing at the impossible.
BTW, as far as the new Whitney album goes, there's only one song on it that I can stand. I miss the "I Learned From The Best" & "Heartbreak Hotel" days. Those records were classics. This entire album sounds like an outdated, over produced disco tribute. It may sell well for the first week or two, but it doesn't have any "hit" single potentials to further promote. She can only play the "woe is me I used to be a druggie and get beat by Bobby Brown" press for so long.

And LMFAO @ Tyler Perry. OMG, he likes the album? I DEFINITELY should buy it because his unfunny self said I should! *goes to FYE*

Re: New Whitney Album On Sale Today!

A beautiful and wonderful public apology and prayer for Whitney Houston from a journalist...

.
.

"So this is my public apology to Whitney Houston for being a critic and not a Christian with compassion as my primary goal. And as such, I would like all who would to join me in prayer for Whitney Houston.

Heavenly Father,

I first ask that you would forgive me for being a critic of someone I don't even know. Someone who you have gifted with incredible talents, but at the same time, she is human and makes mistakes. You said that we all have sinned and fallen short of your glory, yet, with undeserved kindness, you declare us righteous. So I pray that as Whitney Houston steps back into the spotlight, you would remind her of her own righteousness and let that righteousness guide her to greater works. May you light her path and show her the direction to go as she enters this new season of life. Though there may be some that will criticize her, let that criticism not discourage her. Let her hear only from those who are speaking by your divine inspiration. Let her accept the criticisms you need her to accept. May she seek your face and look to the hills from which cometh her help and remember to run to you. You've given her many songs to sing that tell of your grace and your mercy, now let her believe those things in her heart and respond to it with her life. Be her protector, keeping her away from harmful people and danger. Be a provider, making ways out of no way. Be her comforter in the hard days to come. And be her peace so that when it is all said and done, she remembers to look to you.

In Jesus' Name,

Amen"
