Whitney Houston debuts at No. 1

By JOHN WILLIAMS
Senior Editor, JAM! Showbiz

Whitney Houston made like it was the '80s all over again by scoring the top album in the land.

Her long-awaited return, "I Look To You," shot to the top of the Canadian charts selling 10,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan data.

It's easily Houston's best opening totals since Neilsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1996. Her last album, 2002's "Just Whitney," debuted at No. 85 with just 3,000 in sales.

She also grabbed the No. 1 spot south of the border, selling 305,000 copies in the U.S.

Back in Canada, the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies)" was relegated to the No. 2 spot with 7,000 in sales, followed by the premiere of Pitbull's "Rebelation" (6,000) at No. 3, and Vincent Vallieres' "Le Monde Tourne Fort" at No. 4.
Kings of Leon's "Only By the Night" slipped two positions to No. 5, David Guetta's "One Love" came down four to No. 6, while Taylor Swift's "Fearless" moved up from No. 10 to No. 7.

Rounding out the top 10 was Billy Talent's "Billy Talent III" at No. 8, Lady GaGa's "The Fame" at No. 9, and The Used's "Artwork" at No. 10.

In the U.S., Miley Cyrus' "The Time of Our Lives" came in second, followed by Trey Songz' "Ready" in third, Insane Clown Posse's "Bang! Pow! Boom!" in fourth and Colbie Caillat's "Breakthrough" in fifth.

"Million Dollar Bill" is the JAM...I like that..

Re: Favorite/Best Whitney Houston Song

Picking a favorite song by Mariah was easy...But Whitney has so many Pop/Ballads that are out of this world..HARD-HARD to decide...

I'll go with "I will always Love you" & "Miracle"...She's got so many...

Whitney Houston's first album in seven years debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. pop album chart, making "I Look To You" her fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart.

The new disc sold 304,801 copies during the week ended September 6, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The new album also fared well in Canada, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, where early returns show it will also debut at No. 1.

Over the past two years, under the personal guidance of long-time Houston mentor and industry executive Clive Davis, the album has been the beneficiary of huge investment and high hopes with an A-team of producers and songwriters such as Alicia Keys, another Davis protégé, Diane Warren, David Foster, R. Kelly and Akon assembled to help the singer hit all the right notes and demographics.

Houston's last album, "Just Whitney," debuted at No. 9 in 2002 with 205,000 copies.

In 1993, the Houston-heavy "The Bodyguard" soundtrack spent 20 weeks in the No. 1 slot and sold 44 million copies worldwide.

Re: Whitney Houston Comeback CD Sept. 1st!!!

What's the point in having 3 threads, when you post the same crap in each of them?

Re: Favorite/Best Whitney Houston Song

Favorite song - I Learned From The Best
Best song - Heartbreak Hotel

Re: Favorite/Best Whitney Houston Song

OOOH and "Whatcha Lookin' At." They played the hell out of that song for like a week here in Florida. Loved it.

Re: Whitney Houston Comeback CD Sept. 1st!!!

The vibe of the new album is really good. But I just keep thinking, "Man, just imagine if Whitney had sung this in 1985... or 1987... or 1992... or even 1999." She was really an all-time great. There just aren't many of those.

Listening to just the voice, I can't believe that she's the same singer.

I mean, listen to this. I'm sorry, but she's now nowhere near this virtuosity. It's just so extremely rare:

Ah, but oh well. More importantly, I hope that she's truly sober now, and that she stays that way. Many many people near to me have struggled with addiction for years. So, I've witnessed up-close, that it ain't easy.

Re: Favorite/Best Whitney Houston Song

I quite like her debut album, particularly "Someone For Me".

Re: Favorite/Best Whitney Houston Song

"Miracle" was really underrated. I liked her "Star Spangled Banner" and "Who Would Imagine a King" is a great track from the Platnum Christmas Album. Oh and "All at Once" I really like.

I agree about "Miracle". It's a BEAUTIFUL song.

And of course her rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" is total perfection, and the most successful/famous version of the song. Stellar!

"Who Would Imagine A King" is BEAUTIFUL as well. Her tone, her voice....ahh! Could make me have an orgasm. :p

Re: Whitney Houston Comeback CD Sept. 1st!!!

Oprah was on "Good Morning America" this morning and they showed a clip of the Whitney interview:

WOW! This is gonna be some DEEP shit. You can tell Whitney is being totally open and honest. Just laying it out there. And I have a new found respect for her mother...

During the interview, Houston spoke about a time when her mother came to her home with the police to conduct an intervention and get Houston out of the house and off drugs.

"Now looking at it, I see the love and passion that my mother had for me," she told Winfrey. ""My mother had the court paper in her hand and said 'You do this my way or not at all. We'll go on TV and you'll retire.' She came and said, 'It's not worth it.' She said, "If you move, Bobby, they're gonna take you down. Don't you make one move.' And he stood there like, he was scared. And she said, 'Let's go.' She said, 'Let's do this.' She said, 'I'm not losing you to the world. I'm not losing you to Satan. I'm not doing this. I want my daughter. I want you back. I want to see that glow in your eyes. That light in your eye.'"

Winfrey said, "I think it's because of her strong faith in God and the support of her family that she made it through."

:eek: :cry: :=D:
