Bill Werde, editorial director of Billboard Magazine, shared his thoughts on the upcoming nominations and his personal picks for the top awards.....


"I think a lot of people were skeptical about the Whitney comeback. I think there's good reason. She's been through a lot. When you started hearing track after track and it was so good and hitting all of the right notes," he said of possible nominee Whitney Houston.


On Grammy Nominations:

"Her album is really strong, she hits all the right notes for Grammy voters, you can expect good things there."

On Album of the year:

"Whitney is probably a "contender"

On Record of the year:

"I wanna see Whitney win"

Because you don't agree with something doesn't mean it's "anti". As for the signature, I took my inspiration from your own posts. According to you Ms. Houston "dumped" on all other female artist this year because she sold more cds. So now that Ms. Boyle sold more copies...you get the picture.

All I gots ta' say is Meryl Streep hasn't won an Oscar since 1983 I believe. How is that for perspective. These awards shows are just jokes these days. I happen to think Meryl is the absolute BEST ACTRESS out of all the current heavy hitters right now. She hasn't gotten the credit she has deserved (as far as awards are concerned) but everybody knows that even in her sleep, Meryl could act circles around most of Hollywood. Whitney can still sing circles around most of the "hot" women and men in the music industry even with 58% of her voice. The lack of a Grammy nomination does not detract from the talent/legacy....

I've known a few people who vote on the Grammys. And it explains a lot. They work in studios. And they're excellent at what they do. But there's no reason they should ever have any say in choosing Grammy nominees. These guys don't come up for air. They hibernate in their studios. And as such, they're very isolated. They pick up pop culture by osmosis, if at all. And so when they're presented with a list of potential nominees, it's just names on a page. One admitted to me once "I picked Eric Clapton every year just because I've heard of him."

The point of the Grammys, despite what they say, is to pat themselves on the back. And to boost record sales a bit. The industry as a whole doesn't really care who wins so long as there's a winner for people to go buy. Frankly, it's not "an honor just to be nominated" - it's just a potential for some additional sales.

Oh, and in case you think "the Grammys have gone downhill", no. They started there. Here's the very first recipient of the "Best Rock and Roll Recording" Grammy. Prepare to throw your devil horns in the air to...Bent Fabric?
