Re: Poor Whitney ...

Poor Whitney.

No, wait, I meant to say: Thank god for Whitney! Since MJ died I've been wondering which celeb would fill the void left in tabloids and stand-up comedy. ;P

Ew I hate her. I liked her when she first began in the 80's (I wasn't born then but whatever, from the old videos).

You just had to add that bit in the brackets, didn't you?

DIDN'T YOU!

Well, laugh it up, kid-o, because I was born it the 80s. Early 80s. And now I read about kids who were born in the 90s being Hollywood's newest celebrities, and breaking into porn as the newest stars, and I realize that I’m old and dying on the inside.

See in me your future... and fear it.

PS: this is a joke, btw, I don't really mean it and I'm quite happy with my age/era. We all grow old, but I have noticed the age-thing more and more lately. Not in a bad or depressing way, just in a 'oh, wow, look at that' kind of way. As my family doctor once told me about getting older, "Just wait until your doctor is younger than you." So true, so true. But it is happening all around me, and I'm starting to look at these younger people and thinking stuff like, "Holy SHIT, Lady Gaga is the same age as my female cousin!"

Whitney Houston coughs up an excuse for her abysmal performances

WHITNEY Houston's promoter has revealed the cause of her coughing and breathlessness during her Australian tour - she smokes.

Andrew McManus said the singer, 46, had refused to have her throat problems treated. He also said Houston was using her faith to help her get through her much maligned tour Down Under, which has been panned by critics and disappointed fans.

"Whitney smokes. God bless her, I can't tell her not to. She will not take any substances. She just will not. It is what it is," McManus said. "She's comfortable with the show she's performing. She knows she's not hitting every note like she used to. But it's value for money, it's Whitney Houston warts and all."

McManus said the gospel-loving Houston is aware of the haters and has told him to stop protecting her because the critical attacks may be God's will.

"I talked to her after the Sydney show. I told her I have her back but she said, 'If the good Lord wants me to be attacked and ridiculed that's the road I have to go down'," McManus said. "It's an interesting approach. Here I am being aggressive in trying to protect her and she said, 'I love you for it but let it go. I can only give my best, if that's not good enough, so be it. I'm comfortable in my own skin'." The promoter hinted that her performance tonight at Hope Estate in the Hunter Valley may be an improvement on her Brisbane and Sydney shows because it is outdoors.

"She's looking forward to singing outside and not in the confines of an airconditioned venue," he said.

Hope Estate officials said yesterday they had been inundated with calls from fans asking whether tonight's show would go ahead following her lambasted performances in Brisbane and Sydney.

Nah in all seriousness, is she dumb? Her "faith" isn't going to get her voice back, quitting smoking would help. She knows what her problem is but doesn't do shit about it.

Re: New Whitney Album/Song/Performance/Nominations [Mega-Merged Thread]

The fall and fall of Whitney Houston

LAST year, Britney Spears' failure to sing at all incensed Australian fans.

This year, this week, Whitney Houston did sing but the country's talking about her voice, too - or what's left of it.

And unfortunately for promoter Andrew McManus, that talk isn't all good.

Newspapers, TV shows and internet sites have been filled with fans defending the singer for what McManus clumsily described as "having a red-hot crack" and with disappointed punters who felt the show wasn't worth the ticket price (up to $200 in some cases).

McManus took a risk bringing Houston Down Under to start her first world tour in 11 years (she hadn't played in Australia since 1988).

Last year's comeback album I Look to You was her first release since 2002's under-performing Just Whitney.

The positive spin about Houston's time out of the spotlight is that she spent it raising her daughter Bobbi Kristina, who turns 17 next week.

The darker truth is that Houston spent most of that time smoking cocaine-laced marijuana with husband Bobby Brown, the man many blame for ruining her career.

Their 14-year marriage was filled with drug use, allegations of abuse (Brown spat on Houston in front of their daughter), infidelity and a misguided reality show, Being Bobby Brown.

Houston has done only a handful of interviews to promote I Look to You. After airing her demons on Oprah, she will no longer answer questions about her failed marriage or drug use.

She told Oprah they had not used crack, but admitted free-basing cocaine daily.

"We were lacing our marijuana with base (cocaine). We weren't on crack. We weren't on no crack stuff. We were paying money," she said.

"We were buying kilos and ounces and ounces. We would have our stash."

Houston went into rehab (once taking her daughter so she could see what rehab was like -- she blamed the drug use on her "lifestyle" and warned her it was a side-effect) but it didn't stick. Houston told Oprah she was off drugs.

"Don't think I don't have desires for it. There are times it takes a minute to cleanse - 'Get off. Get off me. Just leave me alone. Get off me' - I have to pray it away.

"I'll have a drink every now and then. Don't get me wrong. I can only take today. One day at a time. Right now, no."

THOSE who have seen Houston's Sydney and Brisbane shows this week have referred to "erratic" behaviour, 13-minute stints off stage (McManus insists they are costume changes), and coughing during songs.

McManus insists Houston's health is fine, attributing the coughing to the singer's cigarette habit.

"Whitney smokes. God bless her, I can't tell her not to," he said. "She will not take any substances - when I did Meat Loaf, every night he had to have a cortisone needle. She just will not.

"It is what it is. She's comfortable with the show she's performing.

"She knows she's not hitting every note like she used to, but it's value for money. It's Whitney Houston, warts and all. She's exposed up there on stage."

Houston says her voice has "matured" but she has never been asked whether the drug use has ruined her gift. Many believe Houston is not delivering to her Australian fans.

"When a fan pays a superstar price they are entitled to a superstar performance," said Paul Cashmere, CEO of music website www.undercover.com.au.

"From the footage we've been seeing, Whitney Houston has grossly under-delivered."

Not all those fans agree. McManus says only a small though vocal minority had left Houston's Brisbane and Sydney shows, and refund requests were minimal.

Brisbane's Trent Titmarsh went to the show expecting little and was won over: "Yes, she can't sing her power ballads from the '80s any more.

"But she still gave us all that she can, and it was still more than most 'singers' these days. I never was a big Whitney fan, but I'll defend her, as the two-hour-plus show was better than I thought it would be.

''And she is a true survivor: this is a woman who is 46 years old and nearly died from drugs."

It's that state of Houston's voice and health that divides opinion. Should she be applauded for being a survivor and getting back on stage, or slated for not sounding as she once did?

McManus can relate to some of the criticism.

"If the disgruntled few feel she wasn't up to scratch of the Whitney of 20 years ago, I'd probably have to agree with them," he said. "But she performed the full concert.

"She performed all her hits. She did everything we promoted and said she'd do. It was a great performance.

"This is an icon of the business who hit rock bottom and is fighting back. Instead of slamming her, we should be praising her.

"We're a nation who normally supports the underdog. She's the underdog, and she's getting hammered.

"She's sensitive. She is someone who's 46 who hasn't performed in a long time.

"She's had some real lows in her life, and she's proving she can fight back and give it a red-hot crack. That's the attitude I thought people of Australia would embrace.

"Unfortunately, there's a minority who want to stick the boot in."

But Cashmere says Houston's personal battles should not be an excuse for a below-par performance.

"To argue that fans shouldn't expect to hear the same quality as 20 years ago is complete rubbish," he said.

"A real star gets better as the years go on. Whitney is 46 years old: at this stage, she should be delivering the greatest shows of her career.

"Why should people be sympathetic? They are paying up to $200 for a ticket.

"They should expect the highest quality. They are not donating to a Whitney Support Group.

"If she has problems, then she should go home and come back when she is ready to give value to her fans."

SINGER Damien Leith has also weighed in.

"She's 46 years of age, has a well-documented history of an excessive lifestyle, and now she's back on the road trying to recreate the magic of her hits," Leith told The Punch website.

"It's a tough undertaking and will take a lot of strength and character. Maybe she thought it was time to prove to herself and the critics she can do it. If so, she's brave.

"It takes guts to face an audience after a long break."

But reports from her Australian tour are filtering around the world - not the ideal way for overseas promoters to try to sell tickets for her world tour.

"The world media has picked up on this Australian train wreck," Paul Cashmere said. "If Whitney Houston wants to continue on a world tour now, she will have to get her act together very quickly or cancel the tour."

McManus said he had been "swamped" with calls and emails of support from people who'd seen Houston's Australian shows so far.

He said the bad reports had filtered back to Houston, who had her own way of dealing with the negativity.

"I talked to her after the Sydney show. She's a unique individual, but a beautiful individual. I told her I have her back, but she said 'If the good Lord wants me to be attacked and ridiculed, that's the road I have to go down'," he said.

"It's an interesting approach. Here I am, being aggressive in trying to protect her, and she said 'I love you for it, but let it go. I can only give my best. If that's not good enough, so be it. I'm comfortable in my own skin'."

Whitney Houston plays a sold-out show at Rod Laver Arena on Monday and at the Plenary next Saturday.

Whitney criticism justified

PROMOTER Andrew McManus can thunder as much as he wants, but anyone who has been at one of Whitney Houston's Australian concerts or seen footage of her stop-start efforts and cracking vocals has every right to be critical.

Houston is a mere shadow of the diva she once was.

She deserves credit for putting it out there and giving it her best shot, but these days her best shot falls well short of the mark.

So please, Mr McManus, no histrionics, no attacking the critics for calling it like it is. Anyone who forked out the big bucks to watch Houston is entitled to express disappointment.

There was a time when Australia was in the grip of a cultural cringe that big names from overseas only had to turn up to earn gushing applause. We have come a long way.

I feel a little sorry for Houston because she is at least trying. But the fact remains that if she were unsure she could bring her A-game with her, she should have settled for a more modest tour, smaller venues and cheaper ticket prices.

As it is, she chose the full-blown mega-star concert tour. She charged top dollar and so she has to be judged as such.

Re: New Whitney Album/Song/Performance/Nominations [Mega-Merged Thread]

Whitney Houston's strain on Aussie tour

Whitney looking tired, strained !
Tour slammed by fans !!!
Fans payed up to $699 for tickets !!!

SHOWING the strain of her disastrous Australian tour, Whitney Houston looked anything but an international superstar while eating a late lunch in Sydney yesterday.

Hours before hitting the stage before 12,000 paying fans at the Hope Estate Winery in Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley, Houston, 46, surfaced from her room at the Four Seasons hotel in The Rocks, The Sunday Telegraph reports.

She sat down with a few members of her entourage at 3.30pm and had a Coca-Cola, a bottle of water and a light meal.

Wearing a white singlet and long black shorts and looking extremely tired, despite not having performed since Wednesday night, Houston at times closed her eyes and rested her head against a wall and waved her arms.

After eating, a puffy Houston happily posed with a couple of fans in the hotel foyer before boarding a tour bus for the two-and-a-half hour drive to Hope Estate.

Two decades ago, Houston was the world's biggest pop star. Her magnificent voice pumped out a string of massive international hits, but her destructive relationship with drug-addicted husband Bobby Brown, himself a lower-level pop star, led her to a life of well-chronicled drug dependency.

In recent years she has split with Brown and kicked drugs, but her first tour to Australia since 1988 has been a disaster.

Houston's Brisbane show last week was slated by fans for forgotten lyrics and wobbly pitch.

After paying up to $699 for ticket packages, fans waited anxiously for her to come on stage at 9pm last night and were worried they wouldn't get their money's worth.

"I paid $250 and got a $350 package for the weekend, but I'm a bit concerned about it because I heard in Brisbane she only did a few songs, walked off throughout the show and her voice wasn't that good," said 20-year-old Jess Morton from North Sydney.

The show was not a sell-out, with noticeable empty spaces around the 168ha estate.

"I know she doesn't have the same voice that she used to but I still expect that she will go all right," said Malinda Polanski, 30, from Melbourne.

Re: Whitney Houston or George Michael

George Michael outdoes the divas in Sydney

FIRST Britney disappointed, then Whitney did.

But George Michael broke the run of bad "comeback tours'', winning over more than 40,000 fans at the Sydney Football Stadium tonight.

When Michael sings I won't let you down' at the start of his hit Freedom, he delivers on his promise.

Taking to the stage 40 minutes late thanks to extreme traffic congestion around the inner-city venue, Michael was given a hero's welcome.

Dressed head to toe in black, the former Wham! singer opened with Fast Love.

"Good evening Sydney, are you ready for a good night?'' he said. "It's been 22 years.''

He then launched into crowd favourite I'm Your Man and Father Figure.

While divas like Britney Spears and Whitney Houston left some fans wanting their money back during their recent performances, Michael sang live, hit all his notes and whipped up a party for faithful followers.

He opened his 2010 tour in Perth last weekend and will play in Melbourne on March 3.

``You still look so...good, I don't get it - plenty of sunshine and sex I reckon,'' he said.

George Michael has enjoyed one of the most successful and enduring careers in pop music, selling more than a 100 million records globally.

He has notched up six US number one singles, 11 British number one singles, a Grammy award, three American Music Awards, an MTV Video Music award and two Ivor Novello awards for song writing.

He recently was declared the most played British artist on radio over the last 20 years.

....don't you doofuses think if we were the same poster both our accounts would have been BANNED by now? I'm just sayin. !oops!

On another note -- Nice to know you too read this thread and keep tabs on all things Whitney. I wonder who all else lurks here.

Re: New Whitney Album/Song/Performance/Nominations [Mega-Merged Thread]

That's Queen of The Night, Mr! :p

...and I'll say 10. He did take that bullet for her afterall. :=D: :-({|=

...and no, Kevin makes a better bodyguard for her than me. I'm a much better fanatic/stan/hypeman for her, tho. (!)

Re: New Whitney Album/Song/Performance/Nominations [Mega-Merged Thread]

I just want to cry.

The BBC played more of the Australian tour and it was dreadful. Whitney sounded like she was yoddling "I Will Always Love You." Even the polite British commentator said, "Oh, dear."

^ Well she didn't sound all that bad on her Russian and Korean leg of the tour....

Re: New Whitney Album/Song/Performance/Nominations [Mega-Merged Thread]

Do you think she's still as good as she ever was?

No, unfortunately. She still shows some moments of brilliance, but she's not consistent at all these days....she can sound good one song and then sound a mess by the next song. And the main reason is from the smoking she still does. Hence why she has to take breaks and get glasses of water to stay hydrated to hit notes. But, she is a recovering drug addict, so if smoking cigs is what she feels she has to do to deal with stress and the pressures of touring and all right now at this stage in her life to take the place of her former drug cravings or whatever, then I'll take her smoking cigs over her still doing drugs. I'll take a sober shot-voice Whitney over a drugged up Whitney with a better voice. I hope she gets to a point where she is strong enough to STOP smoking, and all her fans desperately want her to stop and we plead all the time on her message boards and forums, but we understand she is a longtime recovering addict and MANY recovering addicts turn to other habits once they quit drugs, whether it be food or cigs. But we know that once she stops smoking, her voice will improve and her breathing will improve and she won't have to force those notes out as hard and she won't be coughing and yacking and sounding like she got a frog in her throat sometimes. So at least we know there is still a voice inside of her, its just being held back and blocked by her continued smoking (PLEASE STOP, Whitney )

Still, she has moments when she sounds great, even while still smoking. She is just REALLY INCONSISTENT these days because she chooses to smoke. Her breathing being off, sometimes she can hit notes sometimes she can't, some days her voice shows up other days it doesn't. Inconsistency caused by the smoking. Ugh!

Re: New Whitney Album/Song/Performance/Nominations [Mega-Merged Thread]

lol well hey, I don't hate the Aussies.....I just think they (the ones who got airtime, atleast) are very rude and mean though. The ignorant ones who got on television and said she couldn't even entertain a dead rat. Lol......ignorant. But that was only a handful of Aussies out of the thousands and thousands that stayed and enjoyed themselves and being in the presence of a legend. I personally can't wait till Whitney gets the hell up out of there. Ungrateful is right. lol...I mean I understand to a certain point....a lot of the oldschool casual Whitney fans want and expect the voice they hear on cd or something near to it. But they have to understand that this is a 46 year old woman now who has battled a longtime drug addiction and smokes. So you definitely not gonna get THAT voice NOW in concert. Just lower your expectations (hell, Im sure they been reading & hearing about all the damn "Whitney Gone Nuts", "Whitney Drugged Out Again" tabloid stories on her all these past years before they bought their tickets anyway ), and just enjoy it for what it is. Like all the rest of the people who attended her previous Russia and Korea stops of the tour where people were very grateful, respectful and accepting of what Whitney had to give now. Yeah her voice sounds MADD SHOT at times, but she's not a machine and she smokes so you just never know going in what voice you gonna get. Taking a gamble, basically. Might catch her on a good day, might not!

Re: Whitney Houston or George Michael

ET2 - we get it...

You don't like Whitney.

I don't like money grabbing, bad value, I can't do it anymore but I'll fleece you anyway "Diva artistes" - but, I only say it once - & your posts are a little OTT.
