Not niggling. I don't drink and I've never even seen whisky on the rocks. I just assumed that the ice would be floating. It was a serious question. It took me 72 years to learn that ice cubes sink in whisky.

That would be because they don't. They would sink in pure alcohol, but liquors cannot be pure, else the drinker would die.

I don't drink either, but I keep a well-stocked liquor cabinet in case guests do.
 
For another thing, you cannot get a 100% alcohol by distillation, because alcohol and water form an azeotrope at about 91% ethanol molecular percentage or 96% by volume. In other words, at that point the ethanol/water mixture acts like a single compound, so if you distill it, you will get the same percentage you start with.

Well mine don´t float in strong Vodka... :cool:

and as a lover of quality Single Malts - I never ever use ice-cubes,
just a few drops of fresh water from a pipette
