The Queen is Dead. Long live the King.

None of that makes Camilla an acceptable queen, especially on the heels of a virtuous one for over six decades. I agree with those who see Charles' reign as a caretaker one, and that William will face the greater challenge to the monarchy itself. Time and world circumstances will tell.

Queen regnant and queen consort are two different species. In terms of their position in the "firm" Camilla is the equivalent of Prince Philip. I doubt whether the monarchy itself will be under threat when Wills is king, but I do think it will look very different. Smaller, for sure—Charles I is sometimes called King Charles the Martyr; Charles II was the Merry Monarch; this one will be Charles the Downsizer. His real career was as Prince of Wales. He's an old man now. Reigning over us is his retirement project. When he had that crown on his head (the big one) he looked to me like he was reflecting on the past rather than looking to the future. Exactly like in that morose birthday portrait.

My opinion, for what it's worth, is that his task is to pave the way for William to inherit a Scandinavian or Low Countries style monarchy. On yer bike! The pageantry and grand ceremonial stuff can be wonderful, and it's a major boost to tourism, but the world which it belonged to passed away with the late queen. It was the folk-memory of the Empire that kept it alive, but that's receded into history now, and the next generation might find it quaint and a bit ridiculous, and just plain irrelevant.

The Windsors have actually been getting less royal with each generation over the last hundred years. I've been casting an eye over the family tree and it appears that Elizabeth II was the last royal to marry a royal. Compare that to the inbred Victorians. Victoria and Albert were first cousins. Albert's father divorced his first wife and married his niece. So the transformation to a bourgeois (is that still a dirty word these days?) monarchy is well advanced. By the way, here's a fun fact: Elizabeth I had a first cousin who was a blacksmith.

Rob Dixon the dick handler for the next king.

Ooh! Well spotted. He reminds me of someone I used to make eyes at years ago. His LinkedIn profile makes him sound resolutely straight but we can all dream, can't we?

The Coronation Concert line-up...

Dear God, I couldn't even force myself to read to the end of the list, never mind watch it.

I do like the perq of having your own equerry...chosen for his hotness...Rob Dixon the dick handler for the next king.

I thought the same thing. I love how in that picture they look as if they've either just had a quickie or they're about to. I also like their co-ordinated white/sky blue/pale grey outfits, although Rob's pocketless jacket is a bit out-there for my taste. I wonder if he browses the same how-to-dress-like-an-Italian blogs that I do.

Rob's not the only one. Apparently these equerries have been turning heads for ages and I haven't noticed. The king has inherited his mum's right hand man, Major Jonathan Thompson.

^ Looks like she's trying to tow a freight train rather than walking with one made of material behind her.

For his sake, I hope Charles didn't have to sit through this.

Well, the Queen and King are 75 and 74 respectively.

When a bride wears a long train, she is young and strong. When a septagenarian wears one, even a light one like a bridal train, it poses a serious danger. The slightest misstep and a fall could both embarrass everyone, and possibly break bones, and pre-empt the cornonation.

The Queen is wearing heels of some height, a foolish and vain choice probably, to make her look less matronly, her actual age. Although they are not stiilettos, they are high enough to cause real instability if any wrong step occurred.

Her royal robes and train are heavy, completely unlike a bridal train, including fur and velvet, the equal of walking around with a full set of draperies behind you. That weight on the shoulders in consideable, even with the help of pages or ladies in waiting.

The King's robes and vestments included gold, real gold, and silver. You can clearly see him laboring under the weight of it all as his bishops attend him and help ensure he does not fall. He moved extremely carefully and slowly. I'm sure many viewers thought it was for care of the crown. More likely for care of not falling.
