The Queen is Dead. Long live the King.

Well, the Queen and King are 75 and 74 respectively.

When a bride wears a long train, she is young and strong. When a septagenarian wears one, even a light one like a bridal train, it poses a serious danger. The slightest misstep and a fall could both embarrass everyone, and possibly break bones, and pre-empt the cornonation.
The people behind her are there to make her walk as effortless as possible. One was walking at the side closest to us doing nothing, leaving the other young lady to fend for herself. She ended up pulling the gown tight from behind, binding Camilla's legs and causing her steps to be restricted. The gown is supposed to flow. It's the heavy train that needs lifting.

It looks like they had no rehearsal whatsoever.

That reminds me—I meant to bring this up before—does anyone else think Princess Anne looks absolutely fabulous in that men's style naval uniform? Get an eyeful of this bird, she's like a female Nelson. Well, they've done a female Doctor Who, so why not?

Unfinished business.

Yes. It is.

Let's face it. Like Philip. Charles and Cameltoe are about as colonial racist as it gets.

And who cares?

They are irrelevant and easily overlooked.

I didn't sense Phil was racist, he just hated all the riff-raff he had to deal with. He was obnoxious to almost everyone.

I fell down the rabbit hole again today and found this.

Lynwood Westray started his thirty-two-year career as a part-time butler at the White House in 1962 ... Though Westray kept his secrets throughout his career, as he aged, he began sharing his stories ...

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were guests at the White House, there to celebrate the bicentennial of the American Revolution. Westray, dressed in his tuxedo uniform, and his friend and frequent working partner Sam Washington, happened upon Prince Philip sitting alone late at night in the Red Room. “Your Majesty, would you care for a cocktail?” Westray asked, presenting a tray of cocktails to the prince. “I’ll take one ... only if you let me serve it,” Philip replied.

Westray glanced at Washington. “He couldn’t believe it. No one had ever asked us that before.” Westray and Washington accepted the invitation, pulling up chairs, in shock, and allowing him to serve them a drink. He can’t remember what they talked about or what they drank, but that night the Duke of Edinburgh wanted to feel normal, if only briefly. “He wanted to be one of the boys, that’s all.” Westray paused for a moment. “I was served by royalty. It blows your mind.”

Read the whole thing if you get time, it's very interesting.

Lynwood Westray, 1922-2014

The guilty conscience of a fallen empire

The kind of racism Prince Philip exudes is reminiscent of the very spirit of British and other European imperialism at its height. This is the way the British thought when they ruled India, the French when they ruled Algeria, the Italians when they conquered Libya, the Belgians when they owned Congo.

I don't knows why anyone feels a need to defend Phillip. He was what he was. A product of the Empire. When white Britain ruled the world.

But good on him for pouring a drink for the black guys because of some sense of noblesse oblige.

A few pickings from the Wikipedia article on Prince Fillipos of Greece and Denmark:

Prince Philip (Greek: Φίλιππος, romanized: Fílippos) of Greece and Denmark was born on the dining room table in Mon Repos, a villa on the Greek island of Corfu. His family was exiled from the country when he was eighteen months old.

Philip's family went to France ... During his time there, Philip was first educated at The Elms, an American school in Paris ... In 1930, Philip was sent to the United Kingdom. He was then enrolled at Cheam School. In 1933, Philip was sent to Schule Schloss Salem in Germany ... With the rise of Nazism in Germany, Salem's Jewish founder, Kurt Hahn, fled persecution and founded Gordonstoun School in Scotland, to which Philip moved after two terms at Salem.

Because Philip left Greece as an infant, he did not speak Greek. In 1992, he said that he "could understand a certain amount". He stated that he thought of himself as Danish and his family spoke English, French, and German.

By March 1947, Philip had adopted the surname Mountbatten from his mother's family and had stopped using his Greek and Danish royal titles upon becoming a naturalised British subject.

Battenberg before Mountbatten. And a product. Quite literally of the Empire.

Philip's mother was deaf but said to be an excellent lip-reader and fluent in English, German, French and Greek. I'd love to know more about how she accomplished this, and if she had a speech impediment due to her lack of hearing. I wonder if her supposed mental illness and confinement in a mental hospital had anything to do with her disability. In any event, she was a remarkable, estimable woman and worthy of much admiration.

"Although I kept it light, I am quite serious about what I said. There’s a sense of menace that pervades American life, with daily mass shootings, excessive drug-taking, and out-of-control alcoholism. I have never seen American society so divided.."

Taki thinks the answer is a hereditary monarchy, and he has a candidate.

Ho-hum. I've been touting this idea on JUB for four years now:

Still, at least the idea is beginning to gain traction.

It's not too late to call a halt to this 240-year-old failed experiment in republican government, which was inspired by that swivel-eyed loony Tom Paine and the perfidious French.

I'm not sure what I was thinking of there. I got the cart got before the horse.

I'm not sure that a monarch has any authority over drug taking and alcoholism and one certainly would have zero over gun control and mass shootings.

I think Taki might have been a bit tipsy when writing this.

Or is he suggesting that Pavlos and Marie-Chantal would be a salutary change from "gaga Biden" and "vulgar Trump"?

I think the best system is the one we have in Canada where the Crown appoints a Governor General who really is just a useless decoration but as Head of State avoids those tawdry and confusing direct elections for a single person.

They are almost always a non-controversial seat filler with ceremonial duties around opening parliament, dissolving it, etc. etc. But the beauty is....they have no political ambition and are supposed to also not inject their opinion into a discussion.

It means we don't have to pay attention to the nonsense of the actual royals or even care any more if they set foot in Canada, now that Elizabeth signed over the country to us.

I was worried for a bit that we might end up with the Sussexes, not because I don't like them, but because poor old Canada would suddenly have been treated like a new found colony again by the British Press and they would never be left alone. Which is what happened for the brief time they camped out here.

I am just so grateful that the Haus of Windsor ceased appointing their sprog as GG's in the colonies...we could have ended up with Andrew, since he went to school here.

Germany also has a sort of dummy president. Does anyone know his name, without looking it up? I looked it up a few minutes ago but I've forgotten it now. He sometimes shakes hands with Volodymyr Zelensky. I don't know what he does the rest of the time but he doesn't actually reign or anything, so what's the point? Like the hole in the middle of a record, he's at the centre of everything but there's nothing there.
