The Queen is Dead. Long live the King.

The bulk of the king's property portfolio, the "crown estate", was sort of confiscated by the government in 1760. In return the king gets an allowance out of the profits. Quite a big allowance, but most of the money goes to the state. Here's a nice long article about it from The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...ns-wealth-uk-royal-familys-finances-explained

I take this opportunity to confirm my willingness and intention to continue the tradition of surrendering the hereditary revenues, including the Crown Estate, to my government for the benefit of all, in return for the Sovereign Grant, which supports my official duties as head of state and head of nation.

No one seems to know for sure yet what the funeral cost. Perhaps nobody will ever know because the Royal finances aren't very transparent, which is a serious fault in these belt-tightening times. It wasn't all paid for out of our taxes though. The Royal Family has met some of the cost of previous funerals out of its own fortune. Even if KC3 paid the whole bill himself he wouldn't tell, because talking about money in public is vulgar.

Let's say the funeral cost £10 million ($11.4 million), and assume that every penny came out of our taxes. There are 32.2 million tax payers in the UK, so if Her Madge had been buried entirely her own expense instead we'd save 31p (36¢) each. And remember that Prince Philip had a minimalist funeral under Covid lockdown rules, so we saved a lot of money on that one.

But look at the faces of the people lining The Crawl!!
Well worth while.

I'm not too impressed with the style of the lettering, and it looks grit-blasted not hand carved. Hand carving would have taken longer too. I'd like to go and have a closer look.

Well, the official state mourning ended yesterday morning, so dry those tears and throw the black trackie bees in the laundry basket (and remember to wash them with other dark items). It's time to put on a happy face  because we've got a coronation to look forward to! :king:

I hope we get the seldom-heard second verse of the National Anthem.

The National Records of Scotland has today published
an extract from Her Majesty the Queen’s death certificate.
Following her passing at Balmoral on September 8th,
the Queen’s death was registered in Aberdeenshire on 16th September.

Cause of death: rotten old.

Rotten by the entourage.

Poor woman.

Well, well. Now she's finally having tea with Diana and Mom Theresa.

I don't think her and Diana went to the same place, are they doing a virtual tea date?

On my Mother's death certificate, when she passed last year at the age of 101 1/2, the cause of death was listed as "miocardial infarction", not "old age". So maybe doctors and medical examiners here across the pond are more highly trained?!?!?

I understand that if the certifying doctor has personally cared for and observed a gradual decline in an elderly person's health, "old age" is considered a valid cause of death. The death certificate of Prince Philip stated the same cause.

It may very well be that, as was the case with her husband, that the Queen requested that no extraordinary steps be taken to prolong her life.

I assume that a person as old as the Queen can simply "pass away". And, unless an autopsy is performed, the proximate cause of the cessation of bodily functions will remain unknown. An autopsy on a 95 year old woman would hardly seem warranted.

96, so they say.

It is not about the fact, it is about how it would be taken. For gazillions of people "old age" is perfectly valid and settling, whereas being medically specific would set off a tsunami of gossiping speculation and, just like with Diana S, she would not be allowed to rest in peace for decades and..
