Well, I mean, aren't ant colonies literally socially constructed? If the ants didn't behave socially they wouldn't have colonies.


Ultimately I think Lucky's approach to social construction is that as a social species everything we do together is collectively, socially, constructed. As they said, definitions are totally made up by us with no intrinsic meaning. And of course that's the case. Language doesn't exist independent of a society.

I think it'd be fair to divide social construction into two categories, gettin' very meta here.
There's social construction that's societally dependent and there's social construction that's societally independent.

Abstract concepts, like fashion, are an example of something societally dependent. If you remove social interaction what that definition points to becomes non-existent.

Things that exist in nature, like a tree, are an example of something societally independent. If society vanishes trees are still going to exist. But just what is the criteria for something being labeled a tree rather than a bush? Nature operates on gradual changes and the distinctions we try to impose on it simplify the reality; leading to grey zones where categorizations begin to break down.

How close would you say this represents your view on social constructionism? It reads to me as very strawman-ish.

But I definitely do see a problem where some people will lead an argument down a rabbit hole where they basically say that nothing means anything because everything's socially constructed.
It's similar to religious discussions and people leading that topic to the problem of hard solipsism and basically saying we can't know anything so anything's possible.

While it's absolutely a problem that people do that I think it's kind of a sad place to leave a discussion that can be pretty neat if the people involved aren't just trying to trap each other.
