FX season are small though, like only 3 months, but they pack alot in.
But remember they run the entire season without interruptions. On networks they have a hiatus for a month or two. Or they show 4 new episodes in a row, and then take a small hiatus. The season is only 22 or 23 episodes, and they debut in September, so they try to stretch it all the way into May. Also cable shows are already finished filming(or close to) when the season debuts on air.
24 on FOX runs their entire season without interruptions at all. I think that's the only one I've seen on network TV that shows the entire season without a small hiatus or a small break(1 week or 2 weeks).
People have short attention spans in general, and will probably forget everything about the show. Short breaks indeed really hurt a show, and they lose alot of viewers when they do finally come back. Desperate Housewives, Heroes, Jericho, and others have suffered this season in ratings from a hiatus.
ABC is suppose to air the next season of Lost uninterrupted like 24.
