There is no doubt that authoritarian populism has been given a further boost by Trump's victory, after the Brexit vote sent the European Union into a panic with France, and Italy experiencing similar misgivings on their membership of the Euro currency, a fact of life that most of us here in Greece have recognised after the destruction of our locally based industries transferred to other countries.
I am reluctant to equate developments in the USA, UK, France, and Italy with fascism for the common denominator would appear to be disappointment, and disastisfaction with the manner in which industries have been destroyed, in favour of transferring production to Asian countries such as China, leaving a landscape of high unemployment and poor salaries for those lucky enough to remain employed.
Whilst of no interest to North Americans, or North Europeans the economies of Mediterranean Europe have been devastated by membership of the Euro currency, with a growing awareness that multi national corporations have neglected the well being of nations that previously had enjoyed a good standard of living.
Growing nationalistic sentiments will influence the election to power of governments that encourage the growth of manufacturing industries that sell products to home markets.
