The road to the Liberal Nanny State.

For anyone to be calling for laissez faire economic policies at this point, is just plain batshit insane! Deregulated markets is what got us into the mess we're in now. There's a reason why the breaks were put on full blown capitalism in the early 20th century: IT DOESN'T WORK! Greed, corruption, death, destruction, etc., have all result from deregulated markets. Put those children back down into the mines!

The Right plays the victim at every given opportunity. These are the people who push "family values", want prayer in schools, want Creationism taught, want to tell women what to do with their bodies, created the Patriot Act, enacted the Red Scare, want gays to remain in the closet, and so on and so forth. But it's the evil Liberals who are building a nanny state. LMAO!

Abortion and capital punishment are NOT the same thing. The government has no business killing its citizens. Everyone agrees that after a certain trimester, abortion shouldn't be an option, except when a mother's life is at risk. A fetus is not a baby.

Ha!! Have you ever heard of late-term abortions?? And, when talking to a pregnant woman you know, would you ask how the fetus is doing, or would you ask how baby is doing? And, again, no one has commented on my distinction between innocent and evil life. Is it because there is nothing left to say about it after I wrote?

Of course government bureaucrats are all angelic and saintly, never prone to greed, corruption, death, destruction, etc., like in the fallen communist Soviet Union or East Germany, and the incompetant fools in our own governments here in the US. And banks were FORCED to lend to unqualified people, they seldom profited from that, rather they lost A LOT, hence the bailout, which I disagreed with, by the way. No one is arguing for child labor, although I wanted to go to work much younger than was allowed in my state. Your hysterical praise of big government as savior for all our ills is niave at best. A better balance between free markets and more informed regulation by competant people is a better balance. How do we get to that, I do not know, but the Tea Party is a good start so far. Whether power and prestige gets to them or not remains to be seen. Which is why I like term limits!!

Um.. yeah... and that's what's lead to health insurance companies screwing people for every penny they can.. it's what's lead to banks screwing people, oil companies screwing people, corporations screwing people... and you want to add public safety inspectors to that?

Um.... ok.

It would be nice if you'd pay attention. You haven't said a word about what I've described!

You're talking about total lack of regulation. I'm talking about companies whose profit would come exactly from finding things wrong with other companies. They'd make their money off finding where the health insurance companies have screwed someone else, off finding where banks are screwing people. They wouldn't be attached to the companies you're worried about, they'd practically be enemies -- but they'd be the only place the companies needing certification could go for their inspections.

In other words, they'd have a stronger interest in making sure you're safe from rapacious providers of products than the fat-ass lazy bureaucrats who don't suffer at all if they fail to keep tabs on what the electronics or car parts inspectors are up to.

Actually I think we could get away with deregulating almost everything, after first establishing private companies to do the work of safety inspections, except for two things: accountants/bankers and lawyers. Both are in the business of manipulating reality on paper, which is what has caused most of our economic messes in the last thirty years. Enron? it was the accountants. Saving and loan mess? Lawyers and accountants. Bank/mortgage failure? Accountants and a touch of lawyers.

And I don't really see how private companies would keep tabs on them: the only people who could inspect are... accountants and lawyers. Private companies with government looking over their shoulders would probably work if you did one thing: put the same inspection/auditing companies to watching each other as well, with stiff fines when an inspection/auditing company is caught collaborating with the people they're supposed to be monitoring -- and give half the fine amount to the company that caught them.

Liberals are trying to build a Nanny state, and a regulatory state -- at which they've done so well they're driving people out of business and pushing companies to send jobs overseas; they've made it such a red-tape tangle hear that American inventors and businessmen are taking innovative new ideas an products and heading for Europe! We've had some ideas for energy that could make a huge dent in our oil-importation problem that can't be used in the United States thanks to idiotic regulations -- my favorites is "anything to oil", which in the U.S. could make such a small profit the guy who developed it is taking his technology and business and going to France.

The Right doesn't want a nanny state; what they want would be better called a Puritan police state, with little interest in helping people, only in stuffing them into a moral straightjacket, dropping them into a giant mold, and turning them all into little copies of Sarah Palin.

Both sides want conformity through law -- they just want two different outcomes.

Definitely.

Abortion deals with an innocent life that hasn't even had a chance. Capital punishment deals with a very non-innocent life that has given others permission, by his actions, to treat him as they please.
