They knew he was gay. They turned on him because a) he wasn't conservative enough, b) he ran around saying he was 'bipartisan' and c) he drew too much attention to himself in a place where there's a lot of egos ("America's Fittest Congressman").
The guy they replaced him with was from a reliably Republican family and a reliable vote for conservative causes.
Now that the charges against him have been dropped, it looks like he's doing the PnP nothing-to-lose thing.
he was a rising congressional star in the Republican Party for a hot minute until people in his party realized he was probably gay---then they got him on financial corruption charges so he resigned from congress and found his true self a mindless circuit queen.

This is a gross generalization. I have political ambitions. And I'm hoping to become an honest one. Not anytime soon, of course.
