  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

The South of France.

What the heck are those animals at your porch in Costa Rica?

Also this place looks great:

They are Coatis(hopefully the “o” and the “a” are in the right order. They used to come down in a group everymorning to be fed. A great attractionfor the hotel we were staying in. Theyreally were adorable.

The photo you have chosen shows the “Basse Corniche” fromNice to Monaco, the beach at Villefranche-sur-mer and the beginnings of thepeninsular named St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Ilive and work on the bit you can’t see in the picture.

May I remind you that you are meant to just be looking at the photos of St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and not all my holiday snaps since I joined Flickr. ;)

I am trying to get into the habit of taking my camera with me on outings, however banal.

So here is Beaulieu-Sur-Mer, our local market town. Unfortunately it is not very photogenic and has a slight English feeling to it. But we can buy everything we need there.

The few other photos that I took you can find here.

Doesn't look particularly English!

I was just looking at some of your summer 2009 holiday photos. I recognised Chatsworth and Fountains Abbey. Was that also Baddesley Clinton and Benningborough Hall?

Thank you for the photos. They were beautiful. I've been to Europe twice, including once to southern France, but that was a long time ago. It would be nice to go again, but I don't see that happening anymore.

How does one pronounce that name?

The 'lieu' part is the tough bit to explain. Here in Canada, you shape your lips to say 'you', but you shape your tongue to say 'yee'. (That's about as close as you're going to get without learning French.)

The stress is on the second syllable. So, 'bow-LIEU'.

I think the second syllable is a joined, Lee . YOU - slurred into one and a half syllables - as Neil said, accent on the end.

Perhaps some explanations:

I thought that it would be more personal and enjoyable looking at photographs where the origins and the photographer were known. Plus it is a real pleasure to be able to share some of the beautiful sites abounding in my adopted region with those who may never have the opportunity to travel to Europe. So, please, feel free, to explore my other sets on Flickr if the fancy so takes you.

A second reason for this thread is that I hoped it would be a means of stimulating me to get off of my terrace and do something active with my spare time. Seems to be working that way at the present. When Madame returns it may well require a greater effort to get out and about in my limited spare time.

Finally an apology. It is several years since I used my camera and as simple as it is I am having to re-learn everything. Let's not speak of all the fiddling you have to do to get photos onto the computer, Flickr and then JUB.

I do realise that the views are not clear and sharp, whether it is because of my mishandling of the camera, my shaking hands or the heat haze covering everything in mid-summer I have yet to find the answer. I may well re-take all the views when, in winter, we have one of those sunny days where everything is crystal clear and you can see all the way to heaven.

Thank you for your patience and also for your encouragements. Right off to visit Eze Village in the next post.

I really don't know why I don't do these sorts of visits more frequently. This village is just 20mins drive away.

Eze is one of those "perched" villages and a really popular tourist destination. It is also home to the "Chevre d'Or" a hotel and restaurant of world renown. The lunch time menu is affordable if you save up for a year before booking. :D

After a climb back up and down I then drove off to Col Le Eze where all the views were taken, they really were breath-taking.

So you know the routine now; the rest of the photographs are here.

There are other photographs that I took in 2007 which you can see here.

How does one pronounce that name?

As a Canadian, I'd default to the French pronunciation.

If you don't speak french, you can come close by saying "bowl You"
But there is a Beaulieu in the UK as well, and they pronounce it Byoolie, and it makes me cringe.

dpnice, you have an eye for beautiful places, no matter how they are pronounced.

Bewley....

But there is a Beaulieu in the UK as well, and they pronounce it Byoolie, and it makes me cringe.

Yep I once walked by Beaulieu in the UK with my walking group, it's in Hampshire. There's a motor museum there with a lot of famous cars. But I dislike saying 'byoolie' too. Ugh. =;

I've always pronounced it 'beuuuh-LEE-euuuh' (as in the French un peu)

I first saw that word in Priscilla Presley's name, she was once Priscilla Beaulieu Presley for a while.

However the town of Beauly in the Highlands (same origin of name) I've always said 'byoolie'.

The waters of the port of St Jean Cap Ferrat look so calm and inviting. Are they always so tranquil? It's always beautiful in places where the mountains and the sea come together.

David and Chicken Guy,
Thank you for sharing some of that part of the world - they're great.

David - your pics of Spain brought back memories of a week I spent there with my High School Spanish class back in 1973.
We didn't get to go to the coast - but we did see Madrid, Cordoba, Granada, Seville, and Toledo - saw the Alhambra and General Life - but it was February, so it wasn't in bloom. The pics of the Mosque turned cathedral (Granada, I think?) that you have triggered the memories. The architecture is phenomenal - it's great that it has survived through the centuries.

Córdoba.

Nice pics, I loved Burano when I was in Venice.

Gracias, Geloge. 8 days and 7 nights and all the sights - plus it was a "couple" of years ago - February 1973.
