I was looking for something else, and stumbled across this ...
Yes, she's been posted here before, but not like this.
She was, and still is, the fastest of her kind ever built. She was also fireproof, right down to her aluminum piano.
Most of her original fittings are in museums, or were sold to private collectors/businesses, scattered all over the country.
I've been aware of the fight to save her, but I had NO idea just what poor shape she's currently in.
I read somewhere that she's still sea worthy. After seeing this I can't imagine how that can be true.
Her tremendous speed was the result of her hull design, her unique propellers, and the power of her steam turbines, controlled by a system invented by my Great Uncle.
She was actually a U.S. Navy project. At the time, all of that was considered Government State Secrets. Her maximum speed was not allowed to be published.
Her use as a cruise ship was a masquerade of her prime role as a troop transport. Something she was never used for.
It is a true pity, and very sad, to see her as she is today.
Hopefully, though it's Highly doubtful, one of these days she might be refurbished to blast through the waves once again, in all of her previous Glory, Might, and Splendour!
