The VMA's thread

Man i was so mad Christina Lip synced, the look was cool and i loved the remix but damn she should not make a habit of this. I love her but her voice is sooooo amazing live she needs to keep it that way. but yeah the look was awesome.

What I liked about the VMA show is the fact that we all got a glimpse of the state of music today: Christina, Pink and Kanye showed what music and entertainment is all about. Then came Lil Wayne and T.I and they showed us the opposite side.

>>>There really aren't anymore unexpected crazy funny moments...

Someone once astutely pointed out that MTV is a 24-hour commercial for itself. And ever since Madonna push her career into overdrive by writhing around on the stage in a wedding dress, the VMAs became much the same way - "you just GOTTA watch" they seemed to scream. "You never know WHAT will happen!" But the fact is - there's no room for "unexpected crazy funny moments" anymore. Why? Because they've sold the show for years as being the place for "unexpected crazy funny moments". And if everyone is expecting the unexpected, you're gonna have a tough time exceeding those expectations.

I don't even recall Britney fans being overwhelmed by the "Piece of Me" video when it came out, so I'm assuming Britney won three awards as a thank you for her "performance" last year - it was the closest thing to a "unexpected crazy funny moment" the show had in years, and got people talking about it (and her) once again. Everyone was talking about how hideous it was, but even then I wasn't so sure. It gave her a defining down moment - something to bounce back from. Because, let's face it, she just showed up and looked good last night. But since we could compare it to last year, the concensus is that she was amazing.

All I got to say is that this show is TERRIBLE thus far. Brand doesn't work as host, they whore'd Britney out for a lame intro (though she looked really good tonight) and the performances haven't been very good either.

Glad Brit won, though Jordin deserved it more.

when's the last time the VMA's were actually GOOD? the last time i remember enjoying a VMA performance was TLC performing "No Scrubs"....whatever year that was.
i guess i'd probably enjoy the VMA's more if i actually kept up with current music. i'm still stuck in 90's R&B though. seriously, a good portion of today's artists...i've never heard of 'em. also, with the lack of music videos being played on the music channels i was starting to wonder if how many artists are even bothering to still make videos.

fuck though...i probably would've tuned in for T.I. if i'd known he was gonna be there. can't believe that whore Rhianna got to perform with him(love u Danugh;))

What the fuck was up with the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cirus, and the cast of High School Musical... like why is the Disney Channel invading MTV? If you want to be bland, sanitized and boring stay in your bland sanitized and boring corner of the media world please.

Oh my god, I couldn't agree more...At least the HSM cast looked like they belonged there & acted adult somewhat. Miley & the Brothers I can't stand...(Did anyone else see them pouting whenever the host would make fun of them?) grow up & get a sense of humor...

"8 years of Bush is what the Jonas Brothers are gonna need for their bachelor parties" ~that alone made me a fan of this Brand guy

check out Russel Brand's standup...he's hilarious...I think he probably should have laid off the politics....but the Jonas Brothers stuff was fine...come on...every host always has one person/group of people that they pick on....get the fuck over it

I felt like Britney's awards were rewards for showing up skinny and sober. And had she performed, they'd have quickly whipped upa best performance category and gave that to her as well.

Since when do rappers (T.I.) lipsync. And I expected Christina not to join in on that. And um, Rihanna was this years Britney. She was terrible.

Half the performances were like 10 seconds long. And did you see all those 'old, white people' in the stands not clapping, not cheering, just sitting there?

And Russel Brand? I could on and on...

yeah the crowd was DEAD.

They need to have less celebs and showbusiness people right up front and let the kids that they had out on the back lot in the actual show....no wonder Russell seem totally nervous...he had a dead audience

Ya I was wondering what's up with the oldies? Those whose asses are way to tight to take a joke.

I'm glad Russel Brand made it "VMAs".

overall it was a good show....

Russel brand was hilarious tho! love the guy!!

Rihanna Killed It tho! haha

Christina Rocked! (who cares that she Lipsynched? everybody knows what a powerhouse vocalist she is!)

TI was bland as hell...dont like his new song....it sounds like Lollipop haha, can we try to be original?

P!Nk fuckin rocked!

I have to agree w/ TalkinTotheRain, willsboy84, & xyboyms for the most part. 90's VMAs were the best! Big venues, good hosts (chris rock was the best), exciting, and controversial. 2001 was probably the last decent show imo, with the exception of the year of madonna/brit/christina (2003?). although they have tried some interesting concepts like the hotel parties in vegas last year and i liked how they arrived on boats when they were at miami the year diddy hosted, they have been getting more and more boring. but this is the first year i havent watched it the whole way through and im not intending to do so.

for me it seems like they dont have as many of the interesting categories that they used to have, they have really cut down. breakthrough, viewers choice, r&b, group. and although i have always wondered why the hell some vids get nominations, i dont understand their rationale for the majority of the videos this year. Piece of me???? why? wasnt gimme more a bigger "hit" than that & the vid was better too even though neither can compare to her best. if it was for sympathy then they might as well have given MC something for loverboy. speaking of mariah how the fuck is britney gonna win an award for piece of me and mariah doesnt win anything for we belong together??? i didnt think she would win anything for touch my body, if we belong together couldnt win an award i didnt think touch my body would, but when looking at iits competition i think it should have won over some britney piece of me shit. but good for britney, i think she deserves it, but its kinda sad she wins for that piece of shit. i really think she should have just stayed home, she should have accepted awards via satellite or something. maybe learn how to stay out of the spotlight to build more anticipation to come back with a bang, maybe for next year. i guess MTV has to whore her out for ratings. honestly saying she is opening the show is a little misleading when usually the host is the one who "opens the show". when they say performer is opening a show it usually means they are performing first.

the host was funny at times, but mostly creepy. probably one of the worst hosts. because of the topics of a lot of his jokes, i had to keep reminding myself this was a MUSIC award show and not some disney awards or political show. i know they usually have comedians as hosts, but i think this guy was really irrelevant for a music award show. hes creepy, i think he wants to get in the jonas bros pants. but it was funny how jordin sparks made herself look like a dumb bitch.

rihanna's first performance was sad, singing & dancing wasnt up to par, the second was better. lil waynes performance wasnt that good, he looked like an idiot, i wish they had a whole leona lewis performance rather than a little intro, is that a lil wayne song shes on or was that something made just for the performance? oh and where was bleeding love? why wasnt that nominated for anything??? kid rock was okay, i like the song. jonas bros were creepy, when did MTV turn into disney? christina was def the highlight. i missed TI, pink, or kanye west and i havent watched them yet. another boring VMA show. :=D: #-o (!)

I feel like Christina should have definitely either Opened or Closed (more likely closed) the show since she was amazing. She came out with a huge new song, and routine. She REINVENTED herself and that's a big deal, she shouldn't have been given a random middle filler spot, and I'm not just saying it because I'm a fan. She practically made the show.

^^^Totally agree. Kanye's closing performance was just blah! And Britney's "opening" of the show was a bust too! She only had 3 or 4 lines and she still fucked that up by not being able to pronounce 'anniversary'....bless her heart....

Either her or Pink should have definitely opened, Rihanna fucking sucked. But Pink opening would've been awkward since she was performing outside.

I didn't see it so much as a reinvention as just doing what 95% of other female performers are doing out there right now. Sure it was lively, but it really was like whatever.

Reinvention isn't necessarily original. It's reinvention in the sense that the performance was completely different from how she's done it before.

The Fashion Rocks show last night was unbelievably better than the VMA's this year.

I have to agree. I was looking at the performances last night, and thinking why couldn't the VMA's performances have been this good, after all the VMAs is a music awards show while Fashion Rocks is not. However, the Fashion Rocks performances had more structure and the crowd was better; I almost thought to myself, is this Fashion Rocks or the Grammy Awards? It was that good.

YEAH it was great! beyonce, rihanna, etc etc etc. especially mariah even though she looked kinda bored. but that im that chick intro was the best. she better start remixing that shit! way better than vma's. but was that the same performance as the stand up to cancer thing at the end? that was kinda weird.

Ok. I saw it and I have to say it was imo, one of the worst VMAs in history. The entire evening felt really off. It lacked that 'big event' feeling.

The host was a complete trainwreck. I didn't get his sense of humor at all. And it was clear the audience didn't get it at all either.

Let's talk about Britney winning 3 awards for what is possibly the worst video she ever created. WTF was up with that? I may be in the minority but I thought it was really laughable that they gave those awards to the girl. Everyone knows how I feel about that girl...I really wish she would just go away. IMO, there were much better videos that should have won.

I did like some of the performances though. I loved Pink's performance although it seems like her voice is going. Leona was a nice surprise! Loved her version of the Nina Simone classic. But I think Christina was the best of the night.

Her performance was great. I don't really care that she lipped it. She has nothing to prove vocally anymore. She's not a Britney/Ashlee/Katy etc girl. Everyone knows she can sing.
