The Wizard of the Las Vegas Sphere

The future of the Las Vegas tourist appeal is not looking good. The MSG Sphere was built just as the Vegas tourist trade was collapsing under the high cost of everything.
It is also collapsing according to the mayor because Canadians have largely stopped coming there.

And of course, Vegas needs the crowds and excited people to create buzz and atmosphere. Nothing is a buzz killer than thin crowds, half empty show venues and people not spending like whores on a holiday.

Of course, the other factor is that international visitor traffic is falling off because generally now, the US is seen as a really unpleasant and potentially dangerous place to visit because of Border Control and ICE.

Two words: resort fees.

I've stayed at two AirBnb's in Las Vegas and had a great time. Most residential neighborhoods have good bus service, and restaurants catering to locals may not have the gourmet chefs but are affordable.

If things stay this way, more special offers may be coming. The Strat offered ne two complimentary nights with no resort fees. And the Golden Nugget will waive the resort fee for me.

But Caesars properties raised their resort fees to $55/night

But...pro sports were reluctant to expand into Las Vegas because it was a small market. It isn't today. The Golden Knights have a large local fan base now and don't rely on tourists to fill the arena.

Las Vegas is a regional distribution center and a major air hub. There's lots of commercial activity and a major state university. And Nellis AFB adds Military présence.

Las Vegas must operate as any other city. Visitor attractions must be region-wide and varied. Even if gaming recovers, change is coming to Vegas.

Vegas does this all the time. It is a cycle. Prices are low. Then the suits raise prices until people get pissed off. Then prices fall. If they just did a steady price line and not gouge people there would not be so much upset feelings. People in my Vegas groups are saying they will just go to local casinos, they are done with Vegas. There are so many local casinos Vegas may have shot themselves in the foot this time if people stick to their word.

It used to be an inexpensive place to stay with lots of gambling. Now hotel prices are up, "resort fees" (paying for the gym and pool you will not use), food prices once famously low are not at the going rate for tourist cities. Then add in the fact many who are into gambling now can head to their local Indian Casino.

What is killing Vegas is it no longer offers something special that you can not get elsewhere.

^ And their core demographic is literally dying or being shuffled off to nursing homes.

We see this in our own family and friends groups. People who went to Vegas a couple of times each year are either too infirm to travel and spend time there or quite literally expiring.

Vegas was really a Boomer thing with their kids then carrying on the tradition in decreasing numbers.

In Ontario, we now have casinos all over the fucking place competing for the shrinking demo.

Hell for some people it would be nice if the pools were covered by resort fees. They are extra no matter what.

For as long as I can remember, Vegas has been considered to be a place where run down (mob owned?) entertainers were put out to pasture.

Elvis died in 1977, I believe. How many people younger than 40/50 know, or care, who he was?

Oh, and I doubt those dumb 'Hangover' movies have been any help to Vegas.:)

Las Vegas is changing, and don't think the locals will stick around. Everyone can be priced out of the city.

/\ That seems suicidal to me. Like a vendor trying to get out of a tricky/binding rental contract.

Entertainers have moved pass Elvis and The Rat Pack. In the hey day of Vegas you could not be more wrong about ran down entertainers. They were top talent. These days it is not usually A-List people for residencies, but people popular with people in their 40's or 50's. We are the people are gear to these days.

The first one did a huge uptick when it came out. CP offered rooms and tours, etc from things seen in the movie. Independent companies also offered tours and weddings, etc.
