Guys, calm down. They aren't meant to be taken so seriously - they're just commercials. You understand that, right? Or do you fly into a rage every time you open a bottle of Mr. Clean and a bald homosexual doesn't materialize?
this thread is about people being decietful to sell a computer i only dont like it because it isn't true as stated abouve but if you want to think that i am a mac hater

But how is it deceitful, exactly? It's not like they're claiming that the Mac never requires authentication, just that its security model is less intrusive and gives you fewer headaches. (You generally don't need to authenticate to install or remove programs on the Mac, for one thing.) Just like in other commercials they're not claiming that only Macs can make DVDs and photo albums, just that the Mac's a nicer platform all around for creative people. It's all fuzzy generalities and broad strokes to paint a picture that plays to the (real/perceived) strengths of their product to make it more appealing - same as the marketing from just about any other company. I don't see how it's any more deceitful than any other advertising... like, say, those Zune ads that left you with the extremely misleading impression that you could stream all your music live to other players...
Wrong. On all the computers I configured the Dells had way better video. Go ahead, configure one yourself.
Dells are just as high quality as an Apple. And I think they look a hell of a lot better - even I wouldn't own a mac because it looks too gay.
I am at a complete loss as to understand how a computer can look gay. Is this coming from a closeted self-loathing homosexual? I didn't think sponge bob square pants looked gay either but the christian fundamentalists said so.
I finally found the Canadian Dell site that allowed me to get specs and prices. The American one booted me out when I said *no* to agreeing to complete a questionaire.
I compared a Dell 2 gig Inspiron at $1354.00 on clearance for $1099.00 with 1 gig ram, 120 gig drive, 14.1" screen, 100 baseT, double layer burner
The macBook is a 13.3 hi-res 114 dpi screen for the everyday price of $1449. Same memory, drive but 1000baseT ethernet, bluetooth, built-in camera, slightly larger battery. Amazon is currently offering a $100.00 rebate for a final price of $1349.00. So comparing everyday pricing the Mac is 7% higher or less than $100.00 more. That is Canadian pricing. Prices in other countries may differ.
Granted the Mac screen is smaller but with the hi-res its probably the equivalent display area. It is about 1" thick and has a mag-safe power cord and firewire 400 and loaded with software.
This off topic discussion is going nowhere because the windoze guys will never convince a Mac user to go back and the pc users that are going to switch will do it anyway. Half of the Mac buyers are first-time Mac users. That would indicate there are a lot of switchers out there.
Being a Mac user (could you tell?) I come into contact with a high percentage of other Mac users. On the pc side, the common theme I hear is stay away from Dells.
*climbs into flame suit*
This is such an angry forum... But speaking about the commercials, I though that the Security one was really funny. Of course, I haven't used Vista nor seen if the authentification is like that at all. That being said, I thought that many of the earlier ones made the Mac look really annoying and I hated how they insinuated that one could only be creative on a Mac.
I own many macs and love them, but I also own a Windows computer and it duel-boots Ubuntu. I like them all. I've had a few problems with them all, the only thing I can say good about the Mac is that I know how to fix it. I bet I could with Windows if I spent more time using it, but I dont, so there you go.
I know that the Mac / Windows debate can get really heated, but what does it accomplish? I can use my Mac for everything I want, I can use Windows for everything I've tried on it (plus there is more free software, cause more people use it.) and Linux has done mostly everything I want.
iTunes actually only started hogging resources since the 7.0 (at least on macs) and it runs pretty slowly on them too. It really sucks because I loved, loved iTunes before it and the new "CoverFlow' thing doesn't do much for me... I hope Apple decides to pare it down soon or something.
Actually I am pretty sick of all this now. Yes I use a mac after 14+ years of windows. It is not perfect but I prefer it because I spend more time using it than fixing it. No I am not a computer ignoramus, I have built them, programmed them, interfaced them with robots, networked them etc. What I have found is this. A windows help forum is like a meeting of the Samaritans while a Mac help forum is like a social club meeting.
One leaves a windows forum thinking "at least I am not the only one" Leaving a Mac forum one feels more "wow that was interesting I didn't know it could do that."
I confess I have never used Vista, I am in no position to pass judgment so I will not do so. All I ask in return is that those who have not used the latest Macs, please do not pass judgment on them.
Oh dear I have strayed off topic, preheat your flame guns while I don the protective uniform. Now bring on the monkeys!
AJ, I completely agree with you. Especiallly with the newer Mac ads that are out, it just seems like Apple has completely lost any creativity at all and is just re-making the same commercial over and over again. It's rather boring and I'm really tired of all the ads.
Let me preface this by saying that I am largely ambivalent towards Macs. I know they are better at certain applications than PCs just as PCs are better at certian things than Macs. I don't think anyone can argue against that.
Regardless, when a company takes to "We do this better than our competitor, BUY OUR STUFF!" - I get turned off in a hurry. It reminds me a lot of when it's votin' season and all the candidates run those ads where it gets all dark and gloomy and the ominous voice is like "OUR CANDIDATE'S COMPETITOR VOTED TO ALLOW CANNIBALISM!" I prefer when a company sells their products based on their individual merits, not what the other isn't fantastic at. I don't know, it seems a lot more.. trustworthy to me.

I think it depends on which forum you participated in. Maybe you didn't find the right one.
- About the authentication whatever, I've never had any problem with it. Never popup to ask me anything when I installed a new software. [FYI, I installed at least 2 new softwares/week I'm a software fan] I think it's just because I've administrative account. Oh, and for limited account, there is authentication and I think it's kinda usefull, I can prevent other people to try to install things I don't want on my computer.
- Spyware/Virus/Trojan: an average PC-user knows: "staying away from Norton." I've never spent a dollar on these types of software. They are offered for free, and I've never had any virus or spyware problem with my computer.
- Maintenances: it is a misconception when people said PC-users have to spend a lot of time on maintenances. As long as you know what you are doing, don't have to spend much time on it. You can schedule the tasks for specific program, and then they run by itself. You don't have to do anything.
- Itunes: I don't like Itunes and I never used it even if I have it on my computer. lol
- Dells: I have a lot of friends and they are using Dells and they like it. They have no problems with it. They would recommend it to other people. What's wrong with Dells? At my high school, most of the computers are Dell's and the same thing for my university. [maybe next time when I need a computer, I would consider one from Dell and try Vista, but that would be a long time.]
That's what I got so far....
FYI:
I never used a Mac before, so I cannot say anything or try to persuade anyone [especially with people in the heat right now ].
I use a PC and it satisfies me. I love my laptop. ^^ I am using a HP Pavilion Dv5237cl with Intel Centrino Duo T2400 1.83GHz, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB hard drive, OS: Windows media center + Ubuntu 6.10 (I installed it on there, still have to learn more to use it, it's kinda hard and I felt lost sometimes when using ubuntu). Yes, my computer does have a Firewire port, remote control, USB ports, media cards reader, DVD burner, expansion port, + other normal stuff. I bought a ~$20 webcam on Newegg.com and it works great. And it worths less than the equivalence Mac.
Now, my opinion. I don't like Mac much [= I hate Mac] Never intend to get one. A normal Mac laptop is too small, and the high resolution will make everything smaller... and I want the stuff on the screen at high resolution and big . I personally don't like Justin Long in the Mac advertisement much. And don't like the PC guy either. lol
Also, this Apple ads remind me of the "Nintendo Wii vs. PS3"

Most PC users DON'T know what they are doing, that's the point. Most people leave use their computer for months at a time and let it accumulate crap and then it is left to people like you and I to fix all of the problems. The fact is, if these people just used a Mac they would hardly get any problems and they can actually use the computer how it was designed.

Hmm, you've lost me here. You say you don't like the Mac laptop because of the high resolution and then go on to say that you want a screen with a high resolution? And anyway you can change the resolution in the display settings.
In my opinion the only people who can compare the two operating systems are those that have used them both. And as it happens most of these people are Mac converts who used to use PC's. And they all say how great Macs are. Doesn't this tell you something?

Not necessarily. I have used both Vista and several Linux distro's and out of them all I prefer Mac. In fact I have XP, Vista, Ubuntu and fedora core 6 all running in parallels on my Mac.

but you dont use them as a primary operating system where you actually use them i could say i have used mac osx and there were alot of things that i took from the experience all of them negative but i only used it for a couple of hours and that is vastly different to using it on a daily basis as you should well know
also parallels is virtualisation software and boot camp would be a better option to form an opinion of an operating system
AJ, that is a moot point. The Vista market share is miniscule. M$ reported that sales of Vista are way higher for Vista in the first 4 months since release compared to xp. But factor in the computer base is nearly twice the size now as it was for xp when it was released. And finally what M$ doesn't tell you is they changed their accounting methods.
Formerly they added up the actual retail sales and sales of the OS when the pc mfgr actually shipped. Now they add all this up when *they* put it in the pipe.
Oh, and don't forget. Your Mac has new virii created every day. Every day these can take control of your Mac. That's what Gates said.
My, my, what are they putting in the kool-aid in Redmond?

When did i say Anything about vistas market share or reporting practices of company's if microsoft is learning from anyone sony have been a bad infulence on them and yet they are nowhere near that level of reporting shipped numbers as amounts sold
anyway last month vistas market share was 3% so thats about 1 % a month should be passing mac in another couple or maybe sooner
as for the last comment it refered to the thing where some guys had 30 days of osx bugs which they actually did from memory there was one serious one and the rest were basic and not very harmful
and if you didn't notice in those updates you get for your mac include security fixes to patch believe it or not actual flaws in OSX apple or Microsoft would be stupid to not continually pour over there code to fix flaws it is just that apple have had less holes in OSX than XP
also that in red was not said by gates you made that bit up
Actually he didn't. Bill Gates did actually say that.
Nowadays, security guys break the Mac every single day. Every single day, they come out with a total exploit, your machine can be taken over totally. I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine.
