I wouldn't go close to a big male, but they do look nice from a distance. I like kangaroo meat; it is a little gamier than steak, but very lean. I made a lovely kangaroo-tail stew once.

I've never eaten kangaroo meat, but I saw plenty of it on the middle of the roads when driving up to Sydney recently.

It does surprise me that there seem to be a number of roos being kept by some people in the US (who are clearly inappropriate keepers) when it is illegal to export them from Oz. It makes me think that authorised zoos and parks are selling joeys, or our customs officers are crap at their jobs. That video just a few posts ago was very sad to see.

Well, we have 'roo-bars' to avoid damaging the car or 4x4 too much, but the real problem can be if you drive at night through an area with lots of roos and a mob is coming towards you, because it can happen that they jump up between the headlights (blinded and not realising that there is a car between them) and smash through the windscreen. It doesn't happen often, but I've known one person it did happen to, and it put him off night driving for a while.

But, it's not like there are lots of roos all over the place! Lots of metro folk wouldn't have ever seen one personally, or at the zoo, at best. Even in the countryside, where farmers are given to complain about the roos and cockatoos, there really aren't so many - Hooded Rat is right that they were here first. And there are a number of different species, of course, most of which are protected.

I ate roo before I liked it. had it in jerky form, and on a pizza.

They are adorable though. Especially the small ones. Got to go to a wildlife reserve where we could go in and feed them. Got adorable close up pictures. And one of them tried to steal my bag of roo-food hahaha.

As for Koalas...not cute... and one shit one me... making it less cute... brand new shirt had to wash it 7 times before the poop came off. Actually I'm wearing that shirt right now ahahaha.

I miss Australia. beautiful country. I'd like to visit again sometime.

I'd hate to see the aftermath of hitting a kangaroo. I guess it can't be too much worse than hitting a deer, though.

I think the body mass of an adult kangaroo is more on the order of that of an elk. Believe me, hitting an elk is a totally different matter than hitting a deer! If you know deer and are a good driver, driving away from hitting a deer isn't hard; if you hit an elk, the odds of just needing a new vehicle are substantial -- to say nothing of the fact that if you don't kill the elk, it may finish the job by taking out its fury on the vehicle.

Wallabies are not kangaroos, although related. Find some German wallabies below. These were found roaming the Bavarian Alps in Summer. They are voracious carnivores and you'll see that they are even going to eat their own tails and legs, due to the lack of available meat in those mountains. Wallabies grow to enormous proportions, often towering over shepherds and causing them to flee for cover, sometimes abandoning their flocks to the savage and primitive marsupials, illegally imported from Australia.

If I was ever going to emigrate, Australia is one of my top choices, but then I think about the huge spiders that live there and that puts me right off!
