  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

This commercial offends me and makes me cringe. Should it?

Max & Topher, I think some might be anxious because this commercial is being beamed directly into the homes of brainless rednecks who've never (knowingly) met a gay man and who assume all gay men are a blight on American masculine honour and should be bashed up like what happened here

Before I voice my opinion to Bounce, am I right to be offended by this? Would they get away with using a stereotypical slave in a similar way to sell their product? Not bloody likely!

are you offended as a dog owner? chubby person? person who wears black?
the ad doesn't mention the man's sexual orientation. being en femme doesn't always mean gay.

I'm not offended by the commercial - I just found it stupid... like the Terry Crews commercial also listed.

Not... clicking anymore links in this thread.

Kinda.

No, they don't come right out and say he's gay but it does play on the stereotype of "fat, slovenly effeminate man with OCD and a nelly little dog."

I am offended in that the advertising industry resorts to yet another unimaginative lowest-common-denominator stereotype to hawk their products.

Offended? Sure. Anything special about that compared to how other commercials insult my intelligence? No, not really.

The question is

did they intend for it to offend or did they just think it was funny?...

To my knowledge, adolescent boys don't buy a lot of dryer sheets and never will.

Females do most of the shopping so ALL the daytime ads in my country present males as hopeless buffoons, dopey buffoons and an occasional handsome buffoon but always as an object of patronising ridicule.

This ad seems to present this gay man as a harmless but fat and lonely buffoon with a dog (because you know that people who can't make friends buy a dog for companionship)

It's offensive because the only point of the ad (other than to sell bounce) is to make fun of a gay stereotype (complete with pet poodle). If there was some twist, or some other reason to find it funny, it wouldn't bother me. Haw haw haw look at that faggot!

I don't use the word 'offensive' nor 'disgusting' or 'insulting' because they're all states of mind which can change according to your mood or the time (for instance, Pablo Picasso and David Bowie said they're offended by their early stuff).

I reckon we should take individual responsibility as to whether we're offended or not. I heartily disagree with our Irish JUBber who likes to get offended by things from the past centuries and in different continents and where no offence was intended.

I believe in Free Speech and Free Enterprise but I still say this stupid advert reinforces the notion to brainless people that fags are an easy target to vilify.

If you've spent some time in court you'd know realise that the combination of brainless people and alcohol equals testosterone.

Brainless people on testosterone get frisky and feisty and they want to exercise that testosterone. If they can't get a woman they get into skuffles and fights.

This dopey commercial reinforces the notion that fat fags are just buffoons who have no value and it's OK to bash them up.

Wow!!!! Apparently there is a LOT of subtext I missed in this commercial... it was a whole 17 seconds so it was hard to get it all ;).

I find it hard to see how this incites people to beat gay people.

That type of person exists. He wasn't really being anything obnoxious or over the top in my opinion. He was just describing the product.

Cringe worthy? Sure. Offensive? Naaa

I don't think it should. We owe a lot to that sterotype. They are pioneers for gay rights. if you think about it they made being gay real for people by being on TV and in movies all over the world. They made it easier for people like Gareth Thomas to come out if you ask me.
