Tom Daley: Actually I Am Gay

That people can blame him for not adhering properly to a label, is mind boggling and wrong on so many levels.

It's wrong that gay men who abuse the bisexual identity are partly responsible for its dismissiveness in the gay community.

Shame because bisexuality is a real thing. Now the deniers have more reinforcement to keep believing that real bisexuals are liars.

He already said he likes guys months ago, the debate has centered on his monosexuality. It was pretty evident that he was misusing bisexual identity to assuage his coming out in December.

I don't think it was evident at all -- he may have still "fancied" girls at that point.

And he may be one of these guys who defines himself as gay because he has a BF, even if he is attracted to gals too.

I might have been born at night, but I wasn't born last night.

That's quite interesting. Tom made a video to explain where he was in his love life. People infered from it that he was bisexual. Then he explains "I'm a gay man now". Now people blame him for misusing the label...

It's worth repeating, the human being and the human being experience of his life is worth everything, the labels humanity try to put on others are worthless.

It's his experience and he lives his life how and with whom he choses. That people can blame him for not adhering properly to a label, is mind boggling and wrong on so many levels.

But it's SO much more fun trying to tell others that they're supposed to live their lives to YOUR standards!

:p

And they're helped along by people who insist that it was actually a smokescreen.

I' a little surprised that no one is blasting him for not being really gay, just saying it because bis are looked down on.

I am glad that he cleared that up.

No we can go back to not paying attention to him.

Oh I loved that. Of course you are right but then they do keep homosexuality in the public eye and are proving that we can be loveable as well.

Yeah you and I were both disappointed in the fact he tried to say he still fancied girls, some members even tried to defend him being bisexual.

Well I'm glad he cleared it up, honestly I thought it would have been years, so in a way I'm proud of him. He's more successful now that he's out, so I guess he figured he has nothing to hide. It's like being openly gay is the new "in" thing so maybe his sponsors wanted him to be 100% gay.

I'd defend bisexuality with my last breath. What I don't defend are liars.

Indeed. You know Ricky Martin says he likes women too.

Seems legit. :^o

When did he ever lie?

The only lie I see here is the claim that he ever said he was bi -- as this writer points out, that's untrue:

So, as the ab-obsessed media begins to cover this story, let’s hope that the narrative is not “Tom Daley changes from bi to gay” but rather “Tom Daley clarifies his initially murky sexual orientation declaration.” The former is false and damaging; the latter, while less sexy as a headline, is the truth.

I find it sad that people piss on bisexuals by claiming, any time someone comes out and says he still likes gals, he has to be a liar. I find it sad people aren't taken at their word. In Daley's case, given that he had for a very long time dated only gals, the evidence is on the side of him telling the truth both then and now.

I am fairly certain your Avatar is a picture of diver Alexander Despastie. This is the second time I have got his last name incorrect. He is a handsome, likable man who lives in Quebec.

It is, indeed, Alexandre Despatie ('r' before the 'e', and only 1 's' in 'Despatie'). Closest English pronunciation: al-ex-AHND day-pat-TEE.

If you're a fan as well, I have lots of pictures of him in my albums.

Thank you for the information. I think I will check out your Albums. I remember he did an News interview and if my memory is correct I believe he was going to become an actor. He seems like a nice man from the interviews that I remember. I hope life is going well for him. It doesn't hurt that he is so easy on the eyes and those skimpy trunks.

I apologize that I ran out of commentary about Tom Daley and kind of stole the thread a little bit.

awww...he finally "made it". I'm happy for him.

And yeah...I knew he was gay. He just had a little layover before making it to gaytown.

Ugh, I find the notion of invalidating bisexuality as a 'stepping stone' for genuine gay men insufferably annoying. Oh well...

True bisexual men are out there, folks. Despite the bisexuality 'label' being used otherwise.

I don't think anyone is saying that, I'm certainly not. Some people do start out saying they are bi when they aren't ready to be fully gay yet. I had a few friends like that in high school, in high school they were bi and now they are out as gay.

It wasn't explicitly stated. But stating Daley came out in "instalments" is a joke of a statement to make. Bisexuals are shit on by LBT/straights, and there's a great deal of ignorance and indifference toward bisexuals. It's genuine "othering", which ultimately results in bisexual erasure where bisexuals 'pick' one or the other in some bastardized, dichotomous thinking in an effort to find acceptance. I 100% assure you your friends that are now 'gay' probably, really, truly are not. I came out as "gay" originally, so I'm part of the problem. But I've discovered it was grossly immature, so I'm rejecting the label.

Pretty depressing, I must add.

Nothing to do with being a celebrity to me. He's 19 and confused, and using labels at random because our community has structured everything around labelling. I understand his approach. I'm just annoyed at the reaction to it, and the justification for coming out in 'instalments' like sexuality is some sort of Wal-Mart layaway program.
