Tom Daley: Actually I Am Gay

I've slept with like three bisexual guys, no fucking prejudice here. I think you just have a chip on your shoulder.

Gentleheart pretty much summed it up beautifully. Have a nice day, stay bitter.

Gentleheart fed us a line of prejudiced bullshit -- and you like it.

If you are so certain Daley was lying, give us the evidence. Document how in his life he never showed any attraction to girls, and==

Oh, wait -- you can't. Because the only evidence you have is what you read about him, and we all know he's dated girls. It doesn't matter how many bisexual guys you've slept with or know, unless one of them was Tom Daley.

How can you guys be so good at spewing the same line of hate the "evangelicals" do? You're dong the exact same thing they do: deciding what's "really" going on in someone else's heart and head, and judging for it. And by doing so, you reveal that your words can't be trusted: if on the basis of absolutely no knowledge at all you can decide someone else is lying, then what reason is there to believe you're not doing the very same thing? By your standard, I should believe that you're making up the bit about sleeping with any bisexual guys, just like racists claim to have black friends to make themselves look better.

If I have a "chip on my shoulder", then so does everyone who's ever asked that others be treated with respect.

So what if he had a hard time accepting his true sexuality and lied about it? Big deal. He wouldn't be the first person to deny it. What matters is that he stopped the denial and lies.

As a side note, I am always amused when a man says "I am a gay man". The gay part might not be obvious, but I would hope the man part is.

Or was still uncertain, or was unwilling to let go of what he trained himself to for so long.... The sad thing is that so many are wiling to be judgmental.

Heh -- maybe it was as opposed to a "gay boy"? :D

This was me. I am 62 years old now. I was 31 when I finally came out to myself. After that, I could start coming out to other people. I spent exactly half of my life denying my homosexuality. And my career didn't depend upon it. I wasn't in the world spotlight. I didn't have millions of fans. I never once claimed to be bisexual. I simply could not admit to myself or anyone else that I was gay.

I am happy his accepted himself openly now, and I think Kulindahr has summed it up pretty well. We can't and really should not (what is to be gained) doubt what he has ever told. In his first video admitted he was with a man but still fancied women, and that does not really mean that much. Maybe he saw an attractive women 10 mins before he gave the interview and liked her - does that stop him being gay at a later point, not really.
I sometimes have fleeting attractions to women, but I don't view myself as anything but gay - if I said I fancied women and I was a gay man, it would not be a lie to me and nothing would be gained in demanding you know better.

Are you another one who grew up with him? It's amazing just how many close friends Tom seems to have from JUB -- I wonder if he knows?

It's sad to see you join the hypocrite crew that insists Daley conform to someone else's standard. You'd probably be applauding the bi guys who stifle one side of themselves to "avoid this attention" by saying "I'm gay".

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't know that when someone makes their status public knowledge by making such (wholly unneeded, now that he's fully out) statements as "I still fancy women" and "I consider myself a certain percent bi(I'd have to look up the actual percent and quote later on)" that I'm NOT supposed to believe that he's bisexual by his own knowledge. It seems defending THAT isn't enough for some people - I have to have grown up with him in order to have my own OPINION on his thought process.

Me, joining the "hypocrite" side? No, I'm giving credit where credit is due. HE muddied the waters. HE chose to step out halfway when he could have just as easily made one full step forward. I'm not going to call that brave, and if that makes me a hypocrite in your eyes then feel free to view me as one - so long as I can freely think the same about you for trying to damn everyone that doesn't see it your fucking way.

For all your fervor, I'm pretty annoyed that on this subject, it's all coming out of your ass. I don't need him to "conform to a standard", but it's clear you seem to think I need to in order to have my own thoughts.

Kulindahr,

There's not much point discussing this 'bi' business with you here. You're describing a position which may have been true in the bad old days in the 1990s and 1980s and 70s.

But it's not now. The people who use the 'bi' label will be almost disappearing in the next decade.

Oh, the crystal ball approach . . .

"Now that he's fully out" means you think you know him very well, like a close friend, enough that you can firmly say he was lying before.

Please note:

So, as the ab-obsessed media begins to cover this story, let’s hope that the narrative is not “Tom Daley changes from bi to gay” but rather “Tom Daley clarifies his initially murky sexual orientation declaration.” The former is false and damaging; the latter, while less sexy as a headline, is the truth.

Right here again you insist that he should have conformed to your standard: to say he's gay even if he isn't sure of that. Where once you were willing to take him at his word, now you've decided he was lying. Why you abandoned your respect for him and have now joined the "He was lying" bandwagon... well, it makes you a hypocrite.

And everyone who does not see it the way I'm arguing for SHOULD be "damned", because they're claiming to know more about him than he himself does, or to call him a liar when they don't even know him. It's no different at all than what the "evangelicals" do, claiming they really know what's going on in other people's lives when they insist it's a choice.

You're completely entitled to your own thoughts -- but when those thoughts are spun out of thin air and condemning someone else without evidence, you should expect to be called on it.

Good post.

This whole "I knew he was gay" or "He's gay and just afraid to say it" by members of the gay community gets so annoying.

The world isn't so black and white. There do exist real bisexuals but there ARE people who are afraid to come out as gay, and hide under the "bi" label until they are ready (which may be never). Never say never...all sorts of combinations exist in the world.

And because of those that are gay and hide under "bi", the real bisexuals and bisexuals at large get a bad rap.

I'm a sort not as rare as I once believed: my orientation seems to shift with the seasons.

Spring, Summer, Fall, and Wiener ?

Actually that correlates with my seasonal pattern: I find more guys attractive and fewer gals in the winter.

Though my doc told me the research he was working on suggests that with people like me it has more to do with light levels than actual season.
