On the Internet Movie Database's Top 250, The Wizard Of Oz is barely hanging onto the #100 spot, and it looks like it will be falling out of the top 100 soon. Why do you think that might be?

Let's see, Back to the Future, Grindhouse, Donnie Darko, Pirates of the Caribbean and about a dozen others that I've never heard of... This is obviously a popularity contest to be voted on by the masses. Thus, only two musicals, Oz and Singing in the Rain. Not even Meet Me in St. Louis!

Movie critics' lists are bad enough, this one's awful. It's a great snapshot of IMDB's main audience though. They appear to like the new movies much more than classics.

Any comments?

Donnie Darko and Shawshank Redemption are two movies that do deserve to be high on the top list (Donnie should be higher), two of the best movies I've ever seen. It's of course all matter of preference, but there are quite a few movies that I don't like that are on that list, for one I think LotR is highly overrated...

Gone With the Wind at No. 171. You have got to be kidding me!

Too few people appreciate classic movies. Too many are blinded by how great we can do graphics now. It was bound to happen. It's just like with remakes of movies. The remake looks better graphically, so everyone automatically assumes it to be better. I'm reminded of the remake of The Poseidon Adventure. They made great environments and special effects, but the story was severely lacking. Especially since it was being called a remake. I'll take the original ANYTIME.

Sadly, it is the fate of all great movies to fall by the wayside because they will, sooner or later, be considered classic. Sadly, classic now translates simply to old with too many people. I agree with some movies on the list, but Oz is still way up there on my fav list and is not sliding down.

I can't believe it doesn't even have "Earnest Goest To Camp" or "Santa Claus vs The Martians". That list does make me sad.

Here's a much better list of the top 1000:

It's completely understandable that the IMDB list, which anybody can vote on, skews towards newer movies and ones that appeal especially to typical Internet geeks -- scifi, gimmicky thrillers, action films, etc. and away from foreign language films (except Kurosawa, whom they seem to love for some reason).

I suspect the site attracts a lot of fairly young people who aren't familiar with the Hollywood classics. I seem to remember some poll in the media wherein many younger people said they'd never watch a movie, if it were in black and white.

Donnie Darko sucks!! It's the epitome of a stupid art house movie that thinks it's smarter and wittier than it is when it's just pure and utter nonsense with a hardly coherent plot and plot holes the size of texas... if not the whole of America

Les enfants never seem to appreciate anything older than their date of birth.
