Remember how Rand Paul, Mitch McConnell, Susan strongly-worded-letter Collins and Lisa Murkowski were supposedly the reasonable Republicans who would make sure that problematic nominees weren't confirmed?

Well... meet Billy Long.

Billy used to be the US Congressman for Branson, Missouri. Yep, Anita Bryant's post-disgrace home away from home. He retired from Congress in 2023 at age 69. It appears that Long was selected because, while in Congress, he put up a bill to abolish the IRS.

While Billy Long was waiting for confirmation (which took nearly 120 days), the Trump Administration hired him to work as a "senior adviser to the Office of Personnel Management" and he was paid a salary of $195,200 per year.

On June 12, 2025, Billy Long was confirmed by the Senate in a 53-44 vote, with every Republican voting to confirm him.

Then somewhere around late July, someone realized that Billy Long didn't have a college degree, of any type. In fact, he had never worked in accounting or anything closely related to taxes. Prior to his illustrious career in Congress, Billy Long had operated Billy Long Auctions, auctioning cows for a living.
Once someone realized that Billy Long wouldn't have a fucking clue how to run the Internal Revenue Service, there was a scramble to "reassign" him.

Trump has nominated an ambassador to India.

A few months ago, Trump's Director of White House Personnel had some stories written about him. Sergio Gor, age 38, had worked for Sen Rand Paul [R-KY] after previously working for Rep Steve King [R-IA] and Michelle Bachmann [R-MN]. Gor's biography indicated he had immigrated to the US from Malta and his mother was a citizen of Israel.

While in his position as WH Personnel Director, Gor ran afoul of Elon Musk. Shortly thereafter, press outlets started reporting that Sergio Gor was actually Sergey Gorokhovsky and that he was born in Uzbekistan, then part of the USSR. Whispers began to circulate on Twitter (surprise!) that Gor was a Russian spy.

Sergio Gor is now the ambassador nominee to India. Gor, of course, does not speak any of the languages of India, but fortunately English is the lingua franca for the country.

Trump fired one of the members of the board who is opposed to the merger. Robert Primus was appointed to the STB in 2020 by then President Donald Trump. Primus had worked in various governmental positions for 30 years.

Passengers on a Southwest Airlines jet described an unsettling drop Friday on a flight from Hollywood Burbank Airport to Las Vegas after onboard air traffic alerts indicated another aircraft in the area.

Southwest Airlines flight No. 1496 departed just before noon from Burbank to Las Vegas. The plane went on to land safely in Las Vegas after tense moments in the air over California.

Social media posts from people on the plane described the aircraft as entering a "dive" a few minutes after takeoff from the San Fernando Valley airport for the short flight to Las Vegas. Southwest Airlines said the crew was responding to two onboard traffic alerts that the FAA said indicated another aircraft near the passenger airliner.

The problem goes back to when Reagan fired the air traffic controllers in 1981. Since then, there's been a scramble to keep ATC staffed. ATC had a mandatory retirement age at 56. If you do the math, the mandatory retirement for the post-Reagan ATC came just before COVID, when all of the ATC schools shutdown during the pandemic.

Buttigieg does need to produce testimony where he discussed the crappy state of the traffic control system with Congress but, honestly, Congress has been told that it needed to be updated and that there were near misses for decades. The latest time they were told was in a 2024 GAO report, with the subtle title of "Air Traffic Control: FAA Actions Are Urgently Needed to Modernize Aging Systems":

The Federal Aviation Administration relies on information systems to help air traffic controllers keep the airspace safe and efficient. Last year, FAA determined that 51 of its 138 systems are unsustainable, citing outdated functionality, a lack of spare parts, and more.

Over half of these unsustainable systems are especially concerning, but FAA has been slow to modernize. Some system modernization projects won't be complete for another 10-13 years. FAA also doesn't have plans to modernize other systems in need—3 of which are at least 30 years old.

Buttigieg testified before Congress before the Transportation Reauthorization Bill was signed in May, 2024 and authorized funding through 2028. Congress had been debating the bill for a year at that point.

Prior to the 2024 bill, Congress had been reauthorizing the department via Continuing Resolutions. Congress loves to authorize funds to improve airports in their own districts/States. They're not as keen on funding a big project like updating and overhauling obsolete system.

Buttigieg was very vocal about holding airlines accountable to customers. The FAA levied a lot of fines against carriers for the crappy way that they treat customers. Everyone was in favor of those efforts. There were plenty of examples of Buttigieg talking about the need for more ATC employees but he wasn't as strident in his criticism of the obsolete technology.


Of course, Elon Musk is circling like a vulture. He's wanting to put in SpaceLink as a solution to the FAA's woes. To Republicans, privatization is always the best solution, especially if it diverts taxpayer money to their donors.

What a mess. I wouldn't want to be a teacher right now. All you need is a few activist parents complaining to completely screw up your classroom. This whole thing could cause education to go down the drain if enough teachers are stressed and quit their jobs. Four years of this is going to really screw this country up.

It's the ultimate in ironies that conservatives have whined about their views being suppressed on college campuses since the 1980s, and now they're targeting certain types of campus speech that they don't like.

The kids have figured this out. They have grown up with social media, where sexual orientation is no longer labeled and gender has a dozens of permutations. It's the adult who are scared and unable to cope. And certain evangelical Karens want to be able to show up at school board meetings, make threats and act out without any repercussions. Bondi is threatening school boards to try to restrict this acting out.
