Is America as crazy, unhinged and stupid as it appears to a non-American? I'm actually not sure anymore.

Example, and hand on heart this is no lie.

I had one of my big cameras out on the footpath along the cliff top near the Castle here in the town. Was awaiting a chance to photograph seabirds flying past. Very few chances, so I just enjoyed being in the sunshine in November.

Then I was aware of a young woman’s voice from behind saying “Excuse me sir, can you tell me why the water is so far away leaving all those rocks out in the air?” (It was close to low tide) and I thought “she’s having a laugh, playing the dumb tourist”, But no. She wasn’t. She’d got no clue that the seas all over the world go in and out, twice daily.

Caught unawares at the realisation that her blank stares were honest ones I tried to explain that the water surged in and out twice daily and that it was all tied to the phases of the moon. Not one iota of comprehension dawned on her face. American education for you in a nutshell. It appeared that her limit of enquiry ended with putting the question to someone obviously local. Her curiosity had ended by asking her question. Her pal was equally puzzled by the whole thing. They know so very little about the world, these people. Yet these are the voters who voted in DJT. Again. I asked, and they confessed the truth of it. Reason given - it was all about her recollection of what he “had done for me” last time around. Absolutely nothing about what influence he might have on the world and world relations. She was completely contained in her tiny little bubble of ignorant selfishness.

And - “they walk among us” - as the old (American) saying went.

I am reminded of the high school senior, supposedly a top student, who helped out on a former conservation project: he could barely put together a twenty-word sentence! Like the gal above, he didn't understand tides -- and he lived six miles from the beach!

I would point out that Trump spent the entire first term launching stupid investigations into his enemies that produced nothing...and that the GQP were relentless in their pursuit of Joe and Hunter Biden even after their star witnesses came out and said it was all fake and went to jail.

But this time, the protections are down. Trump won't bother with stupid investigations, or the law, or the facts, or the truth. Neither will his sycophant cabinet, his fellow fascists in congress, his lapdog Supreme Court, his flunkies in the military and government agencies, nor will his delusional supporters care about it.

He has a much higher probability of his revenge crusade succeeding this time around. He has the Enabling Act Immunity Decision. He can do what he wants, and it's legal.
