Trump this.

We need to have some conversation about Trump's totally insane and profane Easter Day message.
In the past two days, I've heard more discussion of the 25th Amendment than we have since 2020. This time, it's not just what he did but it's also his mental incapacity. A commentator actually used the word, "sundowning".

Democratic operatives have said that "impeachment isn't on the table" when they take over Congress in 2027. They may want to reconsider their plan and whether to wait.

I've seen a lot of talk about the 25th Amendment recently and almost none of those people have bothered to actually read it. It is in no way a silver bullet. It is more difficult and way more complicated with more steps than impeachment.

The 25th Amendment is not as straightforward or as easy as it sounds. It must be invoked by VP Vance AND signed on to by a majority of the cabinet. Does anyone think they are going to do that unless Trump is in a permanent coma or something?

This is the process in a nutshell that will happen as stated in the 25th if they did invoke it - Read the Amendment.
1. VP and cabinet sends letter to House and Senate saying Trump cannot perform his duties. Result: VP becomes ACTING President.

2. Trump can challenge with another letter saying, nope I'm fine. Result: Trump is President again....unless....

3. VP and cabinet sends another letter saying, No he isn't fine. Result: VP remains ACTING President.

4. Then Congress must vote whether the President can perform his duties or not. There must be a 2/3 vote in BOTH houses of Congress to remove the President. Result: 2/3 Vote=Trump removed and Vance becomes President. Less than 2/3 Vote=Trump becomes President again and utter chaos worse than we already have ensues. What do you think would happen?

Impeachment is the proper course of action, but republicans are not going to allow it. So we are stuck with Trump until Democrats get enough guts, power, and cooperation to impeach and remove him, or until 2029, or he becomes incapacitated, or he kicks the bucket.

There's a third option and it's why countries with a history of dictatorship and autocracy have more than one word for the English word "coup".

One thing that we've learned is that when the Congress wants to do something, they are able to dig up attorneys who figure out a way to accomplish it.

And a reminder: There was worry in the first term that Trump was going to be removed via the 25th Amendment. There's even correspondence between Steve Bannon and Jeff Epstein talking about how Trump should be removed via the 25th Amendment back in 2018... before COVID.
In a text message exchange that began on New Year’s Eve in 2018, shortly after Democrats retook the House of Representatives in the midterm elections, the two men discussed Trump’s political position, with Bannon lamenting that the “WH,” a likely reference to the White House, has “zero plan to punch back.”

“He is really borderline,” Epstein responded. “Not sure what he may do.”

“I think it’s beyond borderline — 25 amendment,” Bannon added, a reference to the provision in the Constitution that allows the vice president and a majority of the cabinet to remove the president if they are deemed unfit for office.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Bannon suggests “we really need an intervention” regarding Trump.

Social media is rife with videos of Trump limping and commenting on his failing health. Some of this might have origin in foreign propaganda but it's being discussed seriously by a lot of people. Once something gets hold in social media, it can often morph into reality.

^^
Bannon hadn't bothered either to actually read and understand what is involved in invoking the 25th Amendment. People yapping about the 25th Amendment don't have a clue about the practical, legal basis to actually do it. Don't get me wrong. I wish they would do it. But it is totally unrealistic.

I don't care how it gets hold in social media. Do you seriously think Vance is going to sign on? Who in the cabinet would sign on? Kennedy, Bessent, Patel, Lutnick, Rubio, Hegseth, Borgum, Duffy, Mullins? Like I said, Trump would have to be in a permanent coma before they do that. Do you seriously think Trump would just go quietly if they did? Do you seriously think 2/3 of the House AND 2/3 of the Senate would vote to remove Trump? Come on. Get real. What it takes to do it, is just not going to happen. Not with things as they are now.

Something has to dramatically change before any of those people, and republicans in the House and Senate, cooperate. Right now, almost every freaking one of them is 100% in lock-step with Trump despite their PR bullshit or "what they say in private". Almost none of them would take a stand, or actually vote against Trump.

Right now, the 25th Amendment, while nice to talk about, is an unrealistic fantasy. What is realistic is protesting, organizing, laying on the pressure and getting people to vote as many of these fuckers out of office as we can. Not to mention, hopefully the courts will shut down as much of this shit as they're able.

Ironically, you're making the same argument as the Heritage Foundation did... 2 years ago when Biden was President.

I certainly don't disagree...it would take total incapacitation before a prez is removed under the 25th.
