So Angela Merkel will be in Washington this week.

With Trumpco's isolationist 'America First' mantra, she takes on the role of leader of the western liberal democracies.....with a number of areas where she will need to defend Europe and human rights.

One assumes that she will again explain to Trump the essence of the Geneva Convention with respect to refugees, the need to maintain an integrated trade economy as she explains how Trump's border tax will result in equal retaliatory taxes and duties on American made products as well as years of WTO challenges and, of course the need to maintain NATO as a shield against Russian expansionism.

Her popularity hardly matters. The strongest opposition is the centre left....so they are hardly the same existential threat to liberalism as TrumpCo. and the GOP are.

The US has to face that Trump has openly abdicated the role the US plays in world affairs.

Most people now see Germany as being the leadership of the western democracies moving into the next four years or even longer.
