So we are being told by economists that it is the American consumer who winds up paying for the economic tariffs that the administration has been imposing. Now Trump is announcing a non-economic tariff! He is wants to impose a 5% tariff on all Mexican goods until they stop South American immigrants from travelling to the US. Gradually increasing the tariff if they fail to comply. Is this essentially an immigration tax on the American People?

Trump announces tariffs on Mexico over immigration

I wonder which companies will have their stock prices fall because of this

...and who will be buying this stock before June 10th

and then Trump changes his mind about the tariffs

^ Brilliant! Trump rarely does anything that doesn't benefit him in some way.

Good question. I can't figure out what this is.

Except that it is literally making the American consumer pay another new consumption tax.

How stupid are Americans that the majority haven't figured out that tariffs are nothing more or less than domestic taxes?

Someone has to explain to me how a 5% tax, paid by the consumer at the end of the day, stops illegal immigration.

Trump is saying the tariffs will increase to 10% on July 1st, 15% on August 1st, 20% on September 1st, and 25% on October 1st. They will then stay at 25% until Mexico substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory.

World markets are all tumbling this morning.

I imagine this all has more to do with Mueller's little fireside chat this week than anything else.

Gee. I wonder who will be buying while the markets are down?

I believe many 'mericans think such tax is to offset import costs and suchlike. He's probably hoping resent of Mexico will develop.

TrumpCo. have managed to wipe trillions off the stock markets with the multiple trade wars in May...18 billion in stock losses in the auto sector alone yesterday.

Iowa farmers are seeing this latest tariff war with Mexico as the death knell to their corn exports.

Surely to heavens the real powers behind the economy and power in the US must be ready to declare 'enough' and remove Trump any way necessary?

I follow the logic. The idea is that people will prioritize buying non-Mexican items over buying Mexican ones because it's more expensive otherwise. This should cause economic pressure on Mexico as a revenue source diminishes. If Mexico is reliant on American consumers buying their items then they'll have to prioritize enacting policies to try and reduce illegal immigration so the tariffs will be revoked. Although how that is supposed to happen, I don't know. It's a complex issue. And if Americans tried to protest by continuing to buy Mexican goods it would just send more money back into the government.

Wow that's just insanity. That's a totally unreasonable timeline, you're not going to see changes as a result of policy in a month, or probably even 2 months. The only way I could see someone successfully meeting that goal would involve human atrocities being committed. Though we're not above that. America has already tried to make illegal immigration by foot deadly in certain areas near the border. Here's a video explaining the process and results:

^ Probably nothing.

As usual, Trump probably caved.

A take on an old joke...

Q. How do you know when Trump is lying?
A. His lips move.

Mexico Agreed to Take Border Actions Months Before Trump Announced Tariff Deal [NY Times]
The deal to avert tariffs that President Trump announced with great fanfare on Friday night consists largely of actions that Mexico had already promised to take in prior discussions with the United States over the past several months, according to officials from both countries who are familiar with the negotiations.

When I heard about this tariff stuff, I was really scratching my head because Mexico already has a pretty tough immigration policy and Trump has been making all sorts of claims about the USMCA (which is really just NAFTA updated). These "tariffs" he was threatening Mexico with would just sabotage the USMCA and Trump runs around claiming that the USMCA is one of his big wins (watch though... he still has to get Congress to ratify the Agreement).

The answer to the mystery is that these tariffs were never a serious threat. He knew that Mexico had already agreed to what he was threatening them over. It was all part of the show.
