Otherwise, what the sheriff has done is legit and part of his job description, IMO.

The problem isn't this sheriff, its the means that they select sheriffs in general. If he was a republican he would be doing the same thing and the libs would be bent and calling him out.

Boston - if this particular sheriff was a Republican and doing the same thing. I'd still sign the petition to have him removed from office.

For the record, I AGREE with Dupnik 300%. I just don't like the idea of electing a sheriff and strangely making him or her choose a party to align themselves with.

"Assisting the DA put together the best case he can" is also not his job: his job is the truth. Of course, so is the DA's, but it's about as likely to find a DA interested in truth as to find a solid gold dollar washed up on the beaches of South Carolina after a hurricane.
 
I found this last night. Does it make the Daily KOS as liable as Palin in your minds? Remember that the guy killed the people on his own and was not influenced by Palin.

I think they need to change the law first.

If they fire these guys then another politician would just get elected to replace them. change the law so that a local governing body hires from within their department and promotes their own people, let these guys just serve their term, and start fresh.

That would be a sane way to effect change with this right now I would think.

These guys all have an election coming at one point or another and they are going to pander to their base, on both sides of the political spectrum. They are supposed to be responsive as elected officials to the people that voted them into office.

If we don't want them to BE politicians then we need to stop hiring politicans for law enforcement.

I guess thats the other side of the coin... it has to be a job that the mayor just fills as a civil servant vacancy... just ask for resumes and fill the spot... OR.. they have to let the city council or whatever local version of it they have do it.

Either way

It would beckon the questions that the sheriff may become questioned because he answers to a politican as his boss.

do you want the population picking their own sheriff or do you want your mayor to do it?
