Part 48
Apology Accepted
"What's wrong?" Marcus asked. Dex was still crying, so Bradley answered. "Casey...died." Marcus stood frozen for what felt like hours. Finally he mumbled "Casey…" before sitting on the ground by the door. Bradley wanted to run and hug him, but Dex was still weeping on his lap. Instead, Bradley motioned his hand to tell Marcus to come to him. Marcus ignored this. His mind was in another world. He stared at the ceiling and cried silently.
After awhile, Dex fell asleep. Bradley gently moved his head off of his lap and onto the bed. He walked over to Marcus and sat with him. He pulled him into a hug. They wept for an hour, when finally they cried all they could. Marcus stood up and wiped his tears away. Bradley mimicked his actions. "I have something to tell you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Please." Marcus said. The sudden subject change surprised Bradley, but he nodded. "Yes. I love you." Bradley smiled and Marcus smiled back. "I love you too."
Dex, Marcus, and Bradley sat at the kitchen table, eating breakfast. Dex hadn't spoken a word about Casey, and Marcus and Bradley knew better then to mention it. Awkward silence filled the room. Once they finished eating, Marcus left to work and Dex to his class. Bradley didn't have class till the afternoon. He sat on the couch and turned on the tv. He skipped past a few channels until the news showed up. The anchor man was talking about a wild bear that was loose in a city. The next subject came up and it was about Casey.
In other news, there was a major car accident in Massachusetts yesterday. An drunk man hit his car into a woman's on a freeway. After hitting, two more cars hit the woman's car. The woman, nineteen year old Casey Stewart, died immediately. The two other drivers who hit her car also died, one of whom, had a child with her, who also died.
Part 49
Aftermath
Marcus filed papers, trying to ignore what was obviously on his mind: Casey's death. Although they had broken up, he still cared about her deeply. He realized that the last time he had spoken to her was over a month ago. Wishing he could not only speak with her but see her one last time, he was filled with sorrow.
Once his shift was done, he waved a silent goodbye to Jay and left the office. He walked done the hallway, right past the door where the LGBT meeting were held. His pace quickened until he turned a corner. "Marcus!" a deep southern voice said happily. Marcus looked up to find Cole standing in front of him. "Hi, Cole. What's up?" "Well not much. I haven't seen you lately. Bradley said it was because of some sort of fraternity plan?" "Yeah. I pledged the Kappa Beta Chi fraternity. I'm hoping to overrun it next year and become president. Then I'll get to make the decisions." Cole made a face of both surprise and respect and said "Well you sure do have a mighty nice plan there. None the less, I hope to see you come to the meetings sometimes." "Yeah, I'll try." Marcus mumbled and they broke apart.
Bradley waited for both his boyfriend and his roommate to return. He was nervous. He wasn’t sure if he could handle it anymore. There had been enough crying this past week, although it was understandable if they were upset about Casey's death. Even Bradley couldn’t lie; he missed her too. Dex arrived first and sat silently onto the couch beside Bradley. After a few minutes of silence, he exploded with words. "I still can't believe that she's gone. She meant so much to me. I mean, she was like a mother to me when my own mom wasn’t there. She taught me everything. Even to ride a bike. I miss her so much. It had been forever since I had talked to her last, and now I never will get to again. I just wish I could see her one more time. Then I would be satisfied. One last time. I would tell her how great she was. How amazingly nice and smart she was. I don’t think she knew how smart and nice she was. Hell of a lot nicer then myself. I miss her."
Bradley wasn’t sure what to say. What could he have said? What really surprised Bradley was that Dex wasn’t crying. He was completely calm. As if he was simply talking about the weather. Bradley reached for Dex's hand, but Dex quickly pulled it away. Bradley gave him a confused look. "I…I'm just not over you yet…I need time." And with that, Dex jumped up and went into his room.
Part 50
Funeral
Finally, Dex, Bradley, and Marcus arrived to the funeral. They jumped out of Dex's car and walked over to where the ceremony was held. They had already said their prayers and were about to bury her. As soon his Dex's eyes met his parent's eyes, he cried. They pulled him in and hugged him. Marcus and Bradley stood off to the side and watched as the burial finished.
Marcus and Bradley arrived at their apartment. Dex had decided to stay with his family for awhile. Not five minutes later, there was a knock at the door. Marcus opened the door and let Liz come in. "How are you?" Marcus asked her. "I'm not too bad. I've been thinking about life a lot lately, with everything that happened…" "Yeah, me too." "I was actually the last person to talk to her. I had been talking on the phone to her and I told her about everything between you and me. She was so mad at me. She kept telling me to stop being slutty and to go apologize to you and Bradley. Then, a few hours later, I found out that she died." Liz said, full of sorrow.
Marcus gave her a small hug. Liz continued: "So the reason why I'm here is to apologize. I'm sorry. I've should've never tried to mess with your relationship. I don’t know what I was thinking." "Thanks. I'll tell Bradley you stopped by, when he gets out of the shower." Liz gave a small nod before leaving.
Bradley and Marcus laid in bed together, their feet intertwined. "I love you so much. I don’t know what I would do if I were to lose you." Marcus said. "I love you too. And don’t worry about that right now. Just enjoy the time we have together." Bradley replied, as he softly ran his finger down Marcus' cheek. Marcus smiled and kissed his hand. Bradley smiled too now and their lips met.
