How disappointing to find some of the remaining virtues of America thrown out readily as expendable in the face of terrorism -- way to cave in exactly the manner desired by the terrorists. THAT sounds reactionary indeed.
The argument that attacks on the Christian Right would bring equal violence is as idiotic as it is inaccurate. There have been abortion clinic bombings, but they were not in retaliation to satire nor to perceived blasphemy in the media. Three decades ago, Monty Python produced "Life of Brian" and solidly lampooned the life of Christ. No riots, no RPGs, no lynching of theaters owners who showed it. There were protests, but not violent. The novel "The Exorcist" included a scene in which a crucifix was used to masturbate the possessed girl, but no one attacked the author or the publisher. Similarly, a crucifix was depicted in a jar of urine in an art exhibit about a decade or so ago, but it did not result in violence.
All that said, the Islamic religion is not the problem, but militants using it are. Christianity is not superior to the same manipulation, as the Oklahoma City bombing included elements of religious fanaticism mixed with anti-government mania.
The United States has been up to its balls with manipulating Iran and deposed the Shah's father long ago to control Iran for decades thereafter. We have backed the Saudi royal family in overtly anti-democratic ways that would enrage an entire spectrum of sympathizers in the Levant. Most recently, we invaded a sovereign nation, Iraq, and replicated the Iraqis' transgressions when they invaded Kuwait. It fanned anti-Americanism in a way that is reminiscent of Nasser's era.
To be sure, the assassination of any ambassador is a depraved act, but let there be no question about it, America has sewn the seeds of animus through decades upon decades of treating the region like a private oil larder. Although the late ambassador may be innocent of the transgressions that merit death, the country he represented cannot claim such innocence.
The incitement to riot is not the same as publishing something offensive and a riot ensuing; they are entirely different.
