Unable to clear my bowel completedly

Kyanimal may be right...makes sense..I am not sure... but for me...I follow the directions as much as possible in order to get the best results. I figure if I have to go through all of that I better do what they say even if it sucks....

I am curious...did they leave the polyps in place when you had yours? I ask because for me..they took them all out every time and none were cancerous....but they removed them all.

The colonoscopy itself is painless...the damn barium enema though..yikes! I would do it again to save my life but I HATED IT!...and you have to drink the crap for that too...and it all comes out of your ass after they blow you up....humiliating...

During my first colonoscopy back in 2004, (where I successfully finish drinking the bowel preparation solution), they discover polyps.

I ask the doctor to remove them. But the doctor said that since the polyps are small, he won't remove it because they will grow back again. Unless the polyps are very big, then he will remove it.

How come your doctor is able to remove the polyps from you if they are not cancerous? You mean, the doctor can remove the polyps during the colonoscopy procedure?

Then why do you need to come back and do a colonoscopy every two years since the doctor has already removed the polyps from your body?

Thanks for explaining. My concern is that enema bulb is used mainly by gay people to prepare for anal sex.

If I tell the doctor/pharmacist that I want to get an enema bulb, they might be in for a rude shock and stare at me strangely.

Thanks for your advices.

No, you do not need a prescription for and enama or bulb. They are available off the shelf at the drug store in the US. Many people need them from time to time, especially the elderly or when the stool is hard. If you discuss it with the doctor, explain the problem being inability are to get a complete evacuation. Usage by gays will not occurr to the doctor.

Yeah..they remove them during the procedure. I had 7 the first time....5 the next...then I think it was 3 or 4 the next times.....I have done it four times......

..... and the barium enema which is also about the colon I had once and I hope i never have to do that again...they blow you up like the pillsbury doughboy and turn you upside down with a cord that pumps air up your ass...it is an awful experience...

I don't know why they removed them but maybe they do the biopsy on them to discover if they are cancerous or not? I think they need to take them out in order to do that....not 100% sure though. They put little clamps where they take them out and tell you they will come out in a few days but you can't eat anything solid. They must be really tiny because I never saw them or felt them coming out.

The every two years thing is because when they find polyps they could be pre cancerous so they do it to see if there is any cancer and it is a relatively easy one to treat if they find it.

What kind of non-solid food did you ate? Porridge?

Hi eastofeden,

may I ask how many packets of bowel preparation powder do you have to drink to fully clear your bowel?

And what is the name of the "powder" that you were given?

Hi...you can ask but you will have to wait until I get it done again this spring to get the name because I never paid attention to it....

I am pretty sure that it was a one gallon bottle and either the stuff was already inside or it was one package....I made it all at once so I am assuming it was just one package or was already inside. The only thing I remember is adding water and gagging...

You will be given a prescriptiom, and at the drugstore you will buy a gallon jug with the powder onside. You just add water.

During a kidney stone I had some difficulty. Also when my appendix went.
The first few times I had to do a colon prep for surgery or colonoscopy it was the gallon of stuff or magnesium sulfate (I think). The one I did a couple of months back had me mix 32 ounces of Gatorade with 12 doses of Mirilax and drink it over the course of an hour, then do it again the morning of the procedure (about 12 hours apart). Was by far easier to drink, and wasn't nearly so violent coming out.

It is a prescription because at my Doctor's Office there is a pharmacy int he building and I only remember the jug...I think the stuff was already in there....I don't remember a packet.

Do you always manage to finish drinking the bowel prep solution? Have you ever not able to finish drinking all of it?

Example: vomit while drinking

Any tips that you can share to help me in successfully finish drinking the bowel prep ??

I have never had a problem. Don't make a big deal of it.

I have never finished the whole thing....

I usually leave a bit because when all that comes out is clear water a few times..I figure it is done.

I forgot to tell you...hold your nose when you drink it and keep it held for a minute after you finish..it helps...

This Friday, September 29th, I went for another colonscopy.

I start my bowel prep on sept 28th.

I have bought seven lemons and a jar of honey. But I did not end up using them.

Strange, this time, I managed to finish drinking 4 litres of water mixed with the powder.

I drank them slowly, bit by bit and take my time.

There were 4 packets of powder. When I was onto my 3rd packet, I accidentally spilled some of the powder because the bottle opening was too small.

But I did complete drinking everything.

There was another problem. When I mixed the packet of powder with 1 litre of water, there was some leftover residue of the powder laying at the bottom of the bottle.

I didn't scoop up the leftover reside to eat it.

Anyway, when I start clearing my bowel, I didn't reach the stage when all that comes out is clear water.

I don't quite understand. I did try and manage to drink finish 4 litres of water mixed with the powder without throwing up.

Anyway, I reach the stage where just yellowish water comes out from my anus.

According to the bowel preparation chart/scale, that was considered satisfactory and can proceed with the scope.

Anyway, the colonscopy turns out to be normal.

The doctor didn't remove anything from me during the scope.

I was given full anesthesia and I don't remember anything about the colonscopy.

Once I close my eyes, the next minute seems like I just woke up from an hour of sleep.

I learnt from the nurse that the colonscopy lasted about 15 minutes, after that I was asleep in the ward for an hour.

Anyway, I have a copy of the results. The results were all normal.

There were pictures of the inside of my colon. Some of them were clean. Other were dark, covered with stool??

Anyway, should I be concerned because I never passed out clear water from my anus during my bowel preparation??

No, yellowish is good enough. The doctor would have told if he did not have a clear view of everything.

Thanks for the reply.

They refer me to see a digestive doctor for "Irritable Bowel Syndrome".

I don't have to go back to the colorectal clinic to see the colorectal doctor anymore.

But I would like to ask the doctor (who performed the colonscopy on me) some questions. I didn't get to speak to her after the colonscopy. Instead, it was a nurse who attended to me.

I would like to ask the doctor why did she put my test results as normal and did she find any piles, polyps or anything suspicious???

Do you think I should see her?

I have a copy of my test results. Do you want me to take pictures and post it here so that you can offer your opinion?

In my experience, hemorrhoids are not reported in a colonoscopy, I assume because they are external. But polyps would have been reported. I am not a doctor, this is based on my experience.
