A few of you might be aware that a LONG time ago I was a Field Auditor for a previous employer, which involved traveling from store to store, conducting inventories and auditing the paperwork/cash handling/etc procedures. It was a job I enjoyed a LOT and was pretty good at it.

I had to temporarily step away from that job for a while, and by the time I was offered that position again, I really didn't want to relocate to the locations I was offered, so I never returned to that position.

Many years later I find myself on the other side of the coin, preparing for an annual inventory at the Retail Emporium.

And it is REALLY REALLY hard to keep my mouth shut.

I'm well aware of the tricks stores use to get stuff counted that really shouldn't; the panic mode the Management is in right now is telling me they are pulling out ALL the stops to get a 'good' result. Part of my 'old' job was to try and catch these activities! And it is driving me NUTS!

I'm also seeing mistakes being made at all levels; managers being unwilling to damage things out that WON'T result in shrink; the attempt to count stuff that really shouldn't be, and more.

Are you Underemployed? If so, please share how you handle it.

If you read this, thanks for letting me vent! :grrr:

I'm underemployed in a sense, by which I mean unemployed.

Does that count?

You should check your state's unemployment insurance program.

I have a friend who's not working enough hours in the week, so he signed up for unemployment insurance. Every week, he answers a few questions online and gets some money.

The program is quite helpful, so you should check it out.

I'm also underemployed, but by choice. I'm lucky, I have the perfect job. I am a professional musician and I work at a job that I love. I make very good money working for a major orchestra, and I choose to work only part time. This gives me plenty of time of to devote to my other passion...being a housewife. Don't laugh, I love all the domestic duties around the house, like cooking, shopping, cleaning etc.

It also helps that I have a husband who makes enough money that we can afford a nice house, and cars (and thanks to domestic partner benefits) health, dental, and vision insurance.

It took MANY years of hard work, sacrifice, and some luck to get where I am today, but I have to say I love my life and can't imagine anything better.

I was underemployed for a good number of years, but I did love what I was doing for the most part back then. I saw things that should have been done better, but pointing this out to management was not really part of my role. I needed the job so I tried to do the best I could as required in my role. I barely had savings; my entire paycheck just went to rent and food expenses, car payments, and part-time studies. I knew that I wasn't going to remain in that job forever, so all I needed to do was to be patient - focus on my role, pay my bills, and do further trainings. I eventually left when I found a better opportunity.

Thankfully now I am working on a job that requires skills and pays a salary commensurate to my ability and what I've trained for. It's a contractor job though (so no pay when I go on leave), but given the current economic situation I know that this is the best I can have at present. What's most important is I'm happy with this job, I get the experience I need, and I'm optimistic to find the next one when my contract is finished.

I'm overemployed. I need to go do a whole lot of work before I can go to bed tonight.

Which is why I'm hanging out at JUB. :D

I have a BS in Biology and like you am working in the retail field. I absolutely hate my job, but love the people I work with and have good benefits. So until the economy turns around and companies are hiring again, I guess I will just have to gut it out.

I'm not underemployed I'm UN employed. I was laid off in October and haven't found a job since. My job was transferred to India. I've been working since I was 16 years old. I absolutely hate not working. I feel unproductive and my self worth is about a zero right now.

While I understand your frustration, I would much rather be underemployed than un employed.

Update on the Job:

Long story short, they finally figured out that Inventory is My Cup of Tea and I know what I'm doing. I spent half the day today doing my job, then the other half of the day training Managers on how to get the store prepared PROPERLY. Tomorrow I spend half the day on my job again, then the other half inspecting other associates work. I report the second half of the day to Corporate (NOT the Store Manager). So now I wear several different hats. Fun! So I'm a Flunkie from 6:30-10:30 AM, take half an hour off, then sign back in under another department code and outrank the Store Manager.

I've been led to believe that due to my experience, I will be supervising the actual inventory process. Overnight hours Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. 5:30 PM-2:45 AM Sunday, 8PM-6AM Monday and Tuesday.

With appropriate pay. :gogirl:

underemployed here, my last good job was in May of 2008, all of a sudden I lost a new job I went to take (small town government) anyhow did not have a job at all until Sept 09, I make less than minimum wage due it being in food service.

I remember having a job a few years back (more that 5) when the economy was booming, I went to work 6 days a week started at 7am and came in after 9-10pm just about (also time and half over 40 and double time after 50) every night, NEVER had time for internet or computer, Looking back now I would go for that any day since I have had both worlds.....................................................

So as an underling, can you get yourself fired, then as a superior, hire yourself back? :D

I'm beginning to believe that's possible.

Today I was scheduled to work a 4 hour flunkie shift.

I was asked to help with Inventory Prep near the end of the shift.

Signed out for a half hour lunch at 10:30 AM; back in at 11.

From 11AM to 5 PM I was running around the store supervising all the Managers who were setting up the 'inventory map' (in simple terms) for the entire place. Any questions were to be deferred to me. I actually was issued a wireless phone so they could call me for clarification.

Now if only I were getting paid the appropriate salary for this level of responsibility.

Underemployment is a terrible thing to live with, but in this economy underemployment is the "new normal". After today's figures, it looks like vast unemployment is here for some time to come. I feel that this will be a terrible year for employment. Terrible. At the end of January, it will be much worse. The intense winter we are experiencing will only help to spur more unemployment as people will do/spend less.

If you are getting even a remotely decent salary, be thankful, because good times are not on the horizon....yet.. As for your sanity, good luck with that.

Are you Underemployed? If so, please share how you handle it.

Yes, I will say I am underemployed. I once represented a global company and managed a multi-million dollar account. I traveled domestically and internationally, mostly to Germany, to perform my duties. I was paid very handsomely for my work. Then I decided to persue "other interests" outside of work and eventually I left the company.

Now my "other interests" are behind me and I am self-employed. Each month is a struggle to pay the bills and to keep ahead of the finances. I have an MBA and years of experience in many fields. However, once a hiring manager sees that I am an "Entrepreneur," that is how I describe my self-employment on my resume', red flags go off. So, I am finding it very difficult to get back into the game so to speak.

So, I will say I am more frustrated than nuts. I take each day one at a time and keep pushing forward. I have been an "Entrepreneur" close to five years. I will continue to be one until another opportunity comes my way.
