With the abstention of the United States and a 14-0 votes of all its members, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 2334 condemning Israeli government and orders to stop its settlement expansion in the Palestine.

From: http://www.un.org/en/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=S/RES/2334(2016)

Reaffirming its relevant resolutions, including resolutions 242 (1967), 338 (1973), 446 (1979), 452 (1979), 465 (1980), 476 (1980), 478 (1980), 1397 (2002), 1515 (2003), and 1850 (2008),

Guided by the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and reaffirming, inter alia, the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by force,

Reaffirming the obligation of Israel, the occupying Power, to abide scrupulously by its legal obligations and responsibilities under the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, of 12 August 1949, and recalling the advisory opinion rendered on 9 July 2004 by the International Court of Justice,

Condemning all measures aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status of the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, including, inter alia, the construction and expansion of settlements, transfer of Israeli settlers, confiscation of land, demolition of homes and displacement of Palestinian civilians, in violation of international humanitarian law and relevant resolutions,

Expressing grave concern that continuing Israeli settlement activities are dangerously imperilling the viability of the two-State solution based on the 1967 lines,

Recalling the obligation under the Quartet Roadmap, endorsed by its resolution 1515 (2003), for a freeze by Israel of all settlement activity, including “natural growth”, and the dismantlement of all settlement outposts erected since March 2001,

Recalling also the obligation under the Quartet roadmap for the Palestinian Authority Security Forces to maintain effective operations aimed at confronting all those engaged in terror and dismantling terrorist capabilities, including the confiscation of illegal weapons,

Condemning all acts of violence against civilians, including acts of terror, as well as all acts of provocation, incitement and destruction,

Reiterating its vision of a region where two democratic States, Israel and Palestine, live side by side in peace within secure and recognized borders,

Stressing that the status quo is not sustainable and that significant steps, consistent with the transition contemplated by prior agreements, are urgently needed in order to (i) stabilize the situation and to reverse negative trends on the ground, which are steadily eroding the two-State solution and entrenching a one-State reality, and (ii) to create the conditions for successful final status negotiations and for advancing the two-State solution through those negotiations and on the ground,

1. Reaffirms that the establishment by Israel of settlements in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, has no legal validity and constitutes a flagrant violation under international law and a major obstacle to the achievement of the two-State solution and a just, lasting and comprehensive peace;

2. Reiterates its demand that Israel immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and that it fully respect all of its legal obligations in this regard;

3. Underlines that it will not recognize any changes to the 4 June 1967 lines, including with regard to Jerusalem, other than those agreed by the parties through negotiations;

4. Stresses that the cessation of all Israeli settlement activities is essential for salvaging the two-State solution, and calls for affirmative steps to be taken immediately to reverse the negative trends on the ground that are imperilling the two-State solution;

5. Calls upon all States, bearing in mind paragraph 1 of this resolution, to distinguish, in their relevant dealings, between the territory of the State of Israel and the territories occupied since 1967;

6. Calls for immediate steps to prevent all acts of violence against civilians, including acts of terror, as well as all acts of provocation and destruction, calls for accountability in this regard, and calls for compliance with obligations under international law for the strengthening of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, including through existing security coordination, and to clearly condemn all acts of terrorism;

7. Calls upon both parties to act on the basis of international law, including international humanitarian law, and their previous agreements and obligations, to observe calm and restraint, and to refrain from provocative actions, incitement and inflammatory rhetoric, with the aim, inter alia, of de-escalating the situation on the ground, rebuilding trust and confidence, demonstrating through policies and actions a genuine commitment to the two-State solution, and creating the conditions necessary for promoting peace;

8. Calls upon all parties to continue, in the interest of the promotion of peace and security, to exert collective efforts to launch credible negotiations on all final status issues in the Middle East peace process and within the time frame specified by the Quartet in its statement of 21 September 2010;

9. Urges in this regard the intensification and acceleration of international and regional diplomatic efforts and support aimed at achieving, without delay a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East on the basis of the relevant United Nations resolutions, the Madrid terms of reference, including the principle of land for peace, the Arab Peace Initiative and the Quartet Roadmap and an end to the Israeli occupation that began in 1967; and underscores in this regard the importance of the ongoing efforts to advance the Arab Peace Initiative, the initiative of France for the convening of an international peace conference, the recent efforts of the Quartet, as well as the efforts of Egypt and the Russian Federation;

10. Confirms its determination to support the parties throughout the negotiations and in the implementation of an agreement;

11. Reaffirms its determination to examine practical ways and means to secure the full implementation of its relevant resolutions;

12. Requests the Secretary-General to report to the Council every three months on the implementation of the provisions of the present resolution;

13. Decides to remain seized of the matter.

A case of better late than never? In my layperson's assessment, this should have been done more than 15 years ago. Still, strong words from the United Nations. Now I hope there will be a consistent follow-thru after this resolution. With its systematic human rights violations committed against the Palestinian people, the Israeli government has already placed itself as a pariah in the eyes of the international community. What stopping the latter from censuring the Israeli government is the United States. With this resolution successfully passed, the United Nations must ensure that the Israeli government will comply and non-compliance will be dealt with accordingly.

About fucking time.

A great Christmas present from Obama now that he doesn't have to worry about the impact on the election.

But Trump of course is going to go in the opposite direction....appointing a hard line know nothing Zionist to prop up Israel's illegal annexation and settlements.

And with Trump coming into office it matters not. Next.

There are no angels in this long standing dispute dating back some 100 years since The Balfour Declaration.

This UN resolution simply plays into the hands of those determined to expand Israeli settlements. Pissing into the wind serves neither the Israeli, nor the Arab populations...encouraging the extremists on both sides of the divide to entrench their positions.

I quote:

A controversial initiative to authorize West Bank outposts — previously postponed until after President-elect Donald Trump enters the White House on January 20 — is “back on the table” following the United States’s failure to veto a UN Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements.

Fearing repercussions from the US administration, a final vote on the so-called Regulation Bill, which would legalize some 4,000 housing units in the West Bank built on privately owned Palestinian land, had been shelved until President Obama leaves office, coalition chairman David Bitan confirmed last week.

But with the US abstention in Friday’s Security Council vote, “We are done playing nice,” a coalition source told The Times of Israel Saturday night.

So in other words you acknowledge the UN is completely powerless in the Israeli-Palestinian situation. Not that it shouldn't have been obvious for the past 60 years now.

The whole thing is just a protest vote against the United States and Israel. That's all.

A vote the Obama government abstained from. There's nothing wrong in the USA symbolising that its support for Israel isn't necessarily going to be unconditional in the future.

^ I think it was a wonderful rebuke by Obama to the hawkish and predatory policies of the current government of Israel.

Israel's hands are not clean in the endless maelstrom of terrorism and violence resulting form the establishment of the state.

Not every north american and I dare say, US citizen agrees with the policy of the US always blocking censure of Israel when it frankly does something illegal and unacceptable under international law.

Israel is like the homeless person who was taken in and now claims ownership of the house.

No actually the land has always belonged to the Jews. Also I don't see why I should support the Palestinians given that they own Black slaves, kill homosexuals and viciously persecute non Muslims. What is hilarious is that Arab Muslims have colonized over half of Africa and yet not a peep from Western Liberals. Hell they even call ex Muslim Africans like Kola Boof etc "Islamiophobes" for speaking out against Arab colonization of Africa.

I've noticed that the left has become very anti-Semitic. Ever heard of the horseshoe theory? Also, the fact that the left supports islam this much, no matter what they stand for, is mind boggling.
I'm sorry but I do not support a religion that wants me dead for being gay, and not being willing to convert to shitlam. Actually no, I do not apologize for not supporting a violently hateful, homophobic religion.

Well that is a pretty stupid viewpoint. It is like saying that England has always belonged to the Celts....you are missing the point here.

Given Jewish Americans tend to be liberal, I'd say you're conflating something else with anti-semitism.

You appear to support politicians who are similarly homophobic, unless I'm mistaken.

You also are totally missing the point. Your own hatred of a religion does not justify the illegal expansion and occupation of other peoples' land.

Bingo. Plenty of people who support Israel don't support the settlements.

Israel says they are sure that Obama engineered the vote. Of course he waited until after the election, after the party collected millions from the Jewish contributors and their votes, then brought the resolution to vote before leaving office, while dishonestly abstaining. A masterpiece of passive aggression. We should all be happy to see him go.

Netanyahu said....a different reality....for Netanyahu's most influential critics, are Israelis who question his obsessive need to feel justified by his support for "settlers," whose support he needs to remain in office.

Ignore the one right win person on here. I have been to Israel and on one of the sites where the Orthodox Zionists build homes on the lands of the Palestinians. The Zionists are Israel's ISIS I have no idea who would not want to vote for this but who ever says something like one person on this thread should be watched ! So your welcome to your thoughts Ben but I will never listen to them.

Israelis population 8 million
Palestinians population about 4 million

How are they going to share the land ??

I was commenting on Hussein's treachery, not commenting on the merits of the resolution. It is hardly likely to be a coincidence that they called this up for vote in the Security Council AFTER the presidential election but BEFORE Obama'a term--and ability to abstain and not veto--ends. The small window is the first time in decades when it could be snuck through without risking a loss of some donations and votes.
